Article - Reward Poster - Portuguese Caravel, 1992
... Victorian Government... was high enough for the Victorian Government to offer a reward... was high enough for the Victorian Government to offer a reward ...The mystery of the Portuguese Caravel, commonly known as the ‘Mahogany Ship’ is today regarded as legend and refers to an ancient wreck that is said to lie beneath the sand between Warrnambool and Port Fairy. Its location is currently unknown, but many people have searched for it through the years since the first reported sighting of an unidentified wreck in 1836. For over a century this mystery has fascinated Australians because the existence of such a vessel could throw light on the earliest phase of exploration of Eastern Australia by Europeans. The interest in the mystery was high enough for the Victorian Government to offer a reward in 1992 which was subsequently withdrawn a year later with no monies being paid. This item is historically significant because of its relationship to an ongoing mystery (the Mahogany Ship) that may throw light on the early exploration of Australia. The offering of a reward, 150+years after the first recorded sighting, by the Victorian Government points to the ongoing fascination with this subject to the Victorian people.A reward poster printed on calico. Even though the poster was created in 1992 it follows the regular structure of a reward poster from earlier times; the word REWARD in large print at the top, the amount $250,000 in bold type and an imagined drawing of the missing Portuguese Caravel.Printed text: REWARD Notice is hereby given that the Government of Victoria is offering a REWARD of $250,000 for the DISCOVERY of an international invader that has eluded authorities for more than 400 years. Believed to be a PORTUGUESE CARAVEL, this traveller is thought to be hiding somewhere along the world's most scenic coastal drive- Victoria's Great Ocean Road. Positive sightings could rewrite the HISTORY OF AUSTRALIA. More than 20 unconfirmed sightings have been reported since 1836. Description: Approx. 26 metres long, 12 metres wide, 20 metres in height, dark brown in colour. Newsletter - City of Moorabbin Historical Society April 2013 doc, April 2013
... victorian government... purposes as required by the new Victorian Government legislation.... The Victorian Government Legislation has a new set of Model Rules ...The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin area residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts that are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum. Helen Stanley, Secretary of CMHS, began producing a Newsletter for members in April 2007 to provide current information and well researched items of historical interest Helen retired in 2012 and Dr Bill Richardson, Secretary CMHS produced this NewsletterDr Bill Richardson, Secretary, has taken on the role of producing the bimonthly Newsletter for CMHS following the resignation of Helen Stanley. The Victorian Government Legislation has a new set of Model Rules that we have been invited to adopt and modify if we feel necessary. Our conclusion is that the new Model Rules are generally comprehensive and adequate, and are simple to understand. We recommend that the new model rules be adopted with some possible additions.A4 paper x 2 pages printed on one side. This is the first of the bi-monthly, City of Moorabbin Historical Society Newsletter produced by Society member and Secretary, Dr. Bill Richardson in April 2013. YouTube video of the Cottage is up and running. Type Box Cottage in search engine. City of Glen Eira properties staff inspected Cottage, found all ok and organised some photographs for the Glen Eira residents’ handbook. Dennis has installed the new display cabinets that he built for the barn for the tools that were displayed in the dairy. This was funded by CGE Community Grant . We will need to decide on the Model Rules and our purposes as required by the new Victorian Government legislation. The next general meeting is on 28th April at 1:00pm .Membership fees for 2013 are due and payable. Volunteers will be needed on Friday 26th April City of Moorabbin Historical Society Inc. / Reg. Furniture - Carved Panel, Campbell, Sloss and McCain, ca. 1886
... Victorian Colonial Government... Victorian government’s Department of Trade and Customs. It was armed... Victorian government’s Department of Trade and Customs. It was armed ...There were at least three 1880s vessels named Lady Loch, all built in Victoria; a river launch (ca 1884-ca 1916, originally named Lady of the Lake), a steamer ferry (1884-1920s) and a government lighthouse tender steamer HMV Lady Loch (1886-1962.) The carved wooden panel was removed from the HMV SS Lady Loch before the vessel was scuttled in 1962. About HMV SS Lady Loch: - The HMV SS Lady Loch was an iron steamship built in Footscray, Melbourne, by Campbell, Sloss and McCain in 1886 for the colonial Victorian government’s Department of Trade and Customs. It was armed with a 6-inch gun and two 1-inch Nordenfelt guns. The Sydney Morning Herald of 27th January 1888 describes the vessel in detail. It even comments on the interior of the Saloon “The wood work … is on a very elaborate scale and is exceedingly neat …”. The HMV Lady Loch performed Customs duties and serviced the lighthouses along the coast. The scale could have measured goods for the Customs Tax, or for measuring out supplies for the lighthouse keepers. The vessel was named after Lady Elizabeth Loch, wife of Sir Henry Loch, Governor of Victoria from 1884 to 1889. In 1932 Lady Loch was converted to a hulk and used in Brisbane, and finally scuttled in 1962 at Moreton Bay, Queensland. The carved wood panel has importance due to its connection to the 1886 HMV Lady Loch, a vessel of great significance to Melbourne’s shipbuilding industry. It was the largest auxiliary vessel in the Victorian Colonial Government’s fleet and the first prominent vessel launched by Melbourne’s shipbuilding industry. It is significant to the history of the Victorian era and the colonial navy's steamship HMV SS Lady Loch. The vessel carried out Custom's work, and the scales were available to weigh goods that could attract taxes and goods for distribution to lighthouse keepers. The HMV Lady Loch was also important part of Victoria's maritime history, its communication with and support of the lighthouse keepers along the coast of Victoria.Heavy carved wooden panel, square, representing a framed plaque. The bottom and right edges are scalloped on the outer and inner edges. A carved oval within the frame represents a wide belt with buckle and tongue, and indents for the belt holes on its left and a carved inscription runs from top centre to bottom centre on the right side of the belt. Within the belt is the maritime symbol of an upright anchor in front of a rope. It was once part of the furnishing of the steamer HMVS Lady Loch and was removed before the ship was scuttled.Carved within the belt: "STEAM SHIP LADY LOCH"warrnambool, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill, flagstaff hill maritime museum, flagstaff hill maritime village, scale, salter, spring balance, silvester's patent, lady loch, steamship, hmv, colonial navy, victoria, lady elizabeth loch, custom's vessel, lighthouse tender, 1886, government vessel, victorian government, wood panel, timber panel, carved panel, carved log, lady loch logo, belt enclosing and anchor, anchor within belt, lady loch steam ship, wooden panel, ship's furinshing, ship's panel, ship's logo, great ocean road, government steamer, victorian colonial government, colonial vessel, public works, bass straight, hmv lady loch, hmvs lady loch, hmv ss lady loch, melbourne, melbourne shipbuilder, ship furnishings, wooden furnishings, decorative panel, carved emblem, carved logo, carved symbol, campbell stoss and mccain, government tender, victorian customs -

Work on paper - newspaper cutting photocopy, "THE PENGUINS/ - IT WAS CLOSE" & "Rylah calls for/report on fires"
... Victorian government... naturalist and author from the time, Graham Pizzey. The Victorian... Pizzey. The Victorian government’s chief secretary, Arthur Rylah ...Short tailed shearwaters and Little Penguins, nesting in burrows on the coast during the warmer months of the year, are extremely vulnerable to fires. Phillip Island had a history of fires on foreshores – either deliberately or accidentally lit. This article describes 2 accidentally lit fires on consecutive days at the Phillip Island Penguin Parade rookeries during the height of the breeding and tourist season in January 1967. The vital importance of volunteers such as the country Fire authority members and the local surfing community, is alluded to in this article by well-known naturalist and author from the time, Graham Pizzey. The Victorian government’s chief secretary, Arthur Rylah, reported here seeking an investigation into the fires at what he terms: “one of the best conservation projects we have done”, was a prominent Victorian politician for many years. This article is significant for demonstrating a growing awareness of the vulnerability of ground nesting birds, of the importance in volunteers such as members of the local country Fire authority and Phillip Island surfing community partnering with wildlife management bodies to protect ground nesting birds, in particular the Penguin and short tailed shearwater rookeries at the Phillip Island Penguin Parade and other parts of Phillip Island. The article also reflects the growing awareness by the Victorian government of the importance of the Phillip Island Penguin Parade to the Victorian tourism economy. Written by naturalist Graham Pizzey, wrote regularly for the Melbourne Herald, the article is another example of how this journalist frequently emphasised Phillip Island’s flora and fauna in his newspaper column.Photocopy made in 1980s of newspaper cutting.
