The nearest wooden pole is stated to be 13.5″ in diameter. The electricity poles in Burke Road required Kew Council to investigate comparable designs in other Melbourne municipalities. The Engineer's Department of the former City of Kew had an extensive collection of photograph of sites in Kew requiring documentation to inform public works. It also kept images of engineering practice in other parts of Melbourne, and overseas, that could be used as models for local activity. Many of these photographs (and plans) were donated to our collection in the 1980s. A number of the photographs are annotated, either on the image itself or on the reverse.This photograph, and others sourced from the City Engineer's Department of the former City of Kew, qualifies as an important record of local streets, public works, street beautification, and engineering techniques of the period. Original black and white photographic positive of automobiles and buildings in Denmark Street, Kew, immediately before the road enters Kew Junction. On the left is McKeon Motors and a retailer of Insulwool, while in the distance is the pharmacy on the corner of High Street and Princess Street (later demolished during the widening of Kew Junction). Notable are the bluestone guttering and what appears to be vacant land on the apex of the triangle of land bounded by High Street South, Denmark Street and Barkers Road. This site was the original location of O'Shaughnessy's 'Kew Hotel', and after the destruction by fire of the latter, the location of a service station. In the description of the Hume Dam the following emendations have to be made. The total length will be 5,300 feet of which 4,258 feet will consist of an earthen embankment. The maximum depth of water conserved will be 24 feet more than originally intended with an additional allowance of 9 feet for surcharge, the total capacity will be 2,000,000 acre feet, the water surface at full supply level 44,000 acres, and provision is being made for a flood discharge of 182,000 cusecs. For handy reference, the main dimensions and figures and comparisons with other dams throughout the world are given in a tabulated statement attached. The Hume Reservoir will be the largest in the British Empire. Photographs showing the work at various stages of construction are appended. View from the Victorian bank of the river showing in the foreground a levee bank along the New South Wales side of the river with connecting wings back to the higher ground, May 1923. The first stage in the construction of the Dam foundations was carried out inside the levee bank which was at a sufficient height to protect from floods the work going on inside. A length of 300 feet of the Dam was left at a low elevation to allow of the river flowing over it in the second stage of the operations and at the ends of the concrete was brought up above flood level. To divert the river, a Coffer Dam was built across the old bed above and below the Dam site and tying into the end of the concrete wall built inside the levee bank.
