Ino KIYOSHI (b 1946, Kyoto Japan, d. 2008) Worked in Australia from 1973–76 and 1978–2008 Ino Kiyoshi was to a family that has been involved in the production of pottery for some 160 years. Working in the family studio while studying at the Kyoto School of Arts and Crafts, he completed his diploma of Ceramic Art in 1969. He then attended the KyotoTechnical School for a post-graduate course in glazing. then lectured in ceramics at the KyotoTechnical School. Following in the footsteps of the famous Japanese potter, Shoji Hamada who had visited Australia in 1965, Kiyoshi Ino visited Sydney in 1973, where he worked with Japanese potter Shigeo Shiga). MALCOLM BOYD Born Gippsland, Victoria In 1977 Malcolm Boyd graduated with a Diploma of Visual Arts from the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education. It was at this time that he presented this work to the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection. Over thirty years later he still has a passion for ceramic history and design. Boyd operated the Black Cockatoo Pottery from around 1980-1995, starting in Essendon, then moving to Ascot Vale, Stratford, Bairnsdale and finally Fernbank in Gippsland. His handbuilt stoneware pots and clay sculptures are wood fired at his East Gippsland studio. He often uses ochre coloured dam banks on his property at Fernbank. The local clays are crushed, screened and blended with a white stoneware body to produce a number of shades and textures. All Malcolm Boyd's pot's are hand built using moulding, coiling, slabbing, and modelling techniques, and are high temperature fired (1300C) to allow some of the very ancient oriental glazes to mature. All works spend at least 20 hours in the wood fired kilns. This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection which was amassed with funds raised by Jan Feder's student peers at the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design in the mid 1980s after Jan Feder passed away. Although many of the works are donated the intention of the collection was to purchase from visiting lecturers who became leading ceramic artists around the world, as well as from many of the staff who taught at the Churchill Campus. This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection. Jan Feder was an alumna of the Gippsland Campus who studied ceramics on the campus. She passed away in the mid 1980s. Her student peers raised funds to buy ceramic works in her memory. Henry MORITZ (1931- ) Born Mainz, Germany Arrived Australia c1952 Henry Moritz was an experienced commercial artist when he left Germany for Australia. After working as a railwayman, coal miner, fruit picker and steelworker, he started teaching commercial art at the Ballarat School of Mines Technical Art School in 1963. He moved to the Mount Helen Tertiary Division, and was head of the Art School at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education (BCAE) when he produced this work. The Ballarat College of Advanced Education logo was derived from the Southern Cross depicted on the Eureka Flag, which was adopted by Ballarat College of Advanced Education in 1978. The logo was designed by former student Debra Garton, who graduated with a Diploma of Art and Diploma of Education. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. John SCURRY (26 August 1947- ) Born Melbourne, Victoria John Scurry studied at the Prahran College of Advanced Education, graduating with a Diploma of Art and Design in 1969. In 1971 he gained a Trained Tertiary Certificate from Hawthorn Institute of Education. From 1973 to 1976 Scurry was a Full time Senior Tutor in the Printmaking Department of the Preston Institute of Technology, becoming Acting Head of the Department in 1976. Working as a Lecturer in the Drawing Department of Prahran College of Advanced Education he then became a Lecturer in Printmaking from 1977 to 1978. In 1979 he began teaching as Full time Lecturer in Printmaking at the Victoria College of the Arts, where in the following years he was Senior Lecturer in Charge of Printmaking in the Faculty of Art and Design (1982-1991, Head of Printmaking School of Art (1991-2003) and Senior Lecturer (2003-2007) before retiring to focus his time on his own work. Juli HAAS (26 April 1952- 02 March 2014) Born Melbourne Juli HAAS (1952-2013) Born Melbourne Juli Haas mainly produced watercolours, artist’s books and limited edition prints using the printmaking technique of Drypoint. She often explores the lives of everyday people with her work often portraying the darker side of human nature in an interior world filled with fantasy and absurdity. Themes throughout her work incorporate the use of childhood memory, place and a sense of personal history. Inspiration is derived from observing her own environment, which is then developed into a portrayal of the absurdity and drama of everyday human situations. Haas applies layers of intense and vibrant colour, which also serves to reinforce the narrative element that runs through the work. The psychological drama that informs this narrative exposes the darker side of life, expressing elements of anger, violence and isolation. Robert WYNNE (1959- ) Born Yarram, Victoria Robert Wynne studied a Diploma of Visual Arts at the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education (now Federation University) from 1977 to 1979, and a Graduate Diploma of Visual Arts in 1981 majoring in Ceramics. During his final year he met visiting glass artist, Nick Mount, who had recently established a studio within Monash University. Robert was captivated by glass blowing and worked with Mount in those heady, pioneering days and carries with him many of the lessons he learned from Nick. Rob Wynne completed a Masters Degree in Glass at the California State University and visited private glass studios in the USA. In 1991 he established his own studio, Denizen Glass Design at Manly, New South Wales, where he produces a range of hand-blown glass including smaller production work and large, one-off sculptural pieces. Peter WILSON Peter Wilson maintains a ceramic practice at Rosemont Pottery in Bathurst, NSW, as well as working as a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Education at the Charles Sturt University Bathurst Campus. He trained at Macquarie University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1976, and has been making reduced stoneware and tableware and exhibiting ceramics since 1980. Wilson writes extensively about ceramics and obtained a Graduate Diploma of Arts (Visual Arts) from Monash University Gippsland in 1993, a Master of Creative Arts from Wollongong University in 1995 and a Doctor of Creative Arts from the University of Western Sydney in 2003. She was doing Matriculation (similar to VCE), and faced a problem with continuing her education until Legacy heard of her situation. Legacy provided free dental care, granted her an allowance, paid her matriculation exam fees. After she matriculated her career path was a Diploma course in Foods and Food Services and Legacy paid for her first year course fees and continued her allowance. Based on her remarkable results Legacy continued supporting her course fees until she graduated a happy, well-adjusted, successful girl in a well known test kitchen.
