Florence Tatham Mellblom (nee Henry) was a painter, naturalist and photographer. She was born at Portland, Victoria, and studied art in Ballarat. She was a talented etcher from childhood, and joined the Portland Camera club. She also produced many watercolour paintings of the historic places of Portland. She was married (1932) to Karl Enoch Mellblom.Image depicts a bluestone building. In the foreground, to the front of the building is grass in shades of green and yellow. The building is in the middle of the image and has a reddish lower building to its right. There are trees either side of the buildings. Surrey College was opened in early 1892 by Rev. Dr Frederick Darling who had been the first minister of the Presbyterian Church in Canterbury Road. He resigned this position to open the school which operated until 1908 with additional premises at 12 Vincent Street. The school had 40 boarders as well as day boys. Courses included algebra, euclid, history, typewriting, shorthand and drill. In the 1930s, Nethercourt Private Hospital took over the site. Later it became St Jude's Hospital. land in front of the building was subdivided off in the 1970s. The building is still extant as a private dwelling with York Street, Surrey Hills as the address. This is one of 3 photos donated by Susan Hobbs, whose grandfather Rev. George Edward Downton is thought to have been a student at the college. George E. Downton was born in Avoca in 1885. He was later a missionary in New Guinea and Secretary to the Australian Board of Missions in Adelaide. He died in 1926 or 1927. A scythe is an agricultural hand tool for mowing grass or reaping crops. It was largely replaced by horse-drawn and then tractor machinery. A scythe consists of a wooden shaft and a long, curved blade is mounted at the lower end, perpendicular. Scythes always have the blade projecting from the left side when in use. Mowing is done by holding the handle , with the arms straight, the blade parallel to the ground and very close to it, and the body twisted to the right. The body is then twisted steadily to the left, moving the scythe blade along its length in a long arc from right to left, ending in front of the mower, thus depositing the cut grass to the left. Mowing proceeds with a steady rhythm, stopping at frequent intervals to sharpen the blade. Endgate seeders consisted of a hopper, feeding device, (early models had only one distributor - later models had two. Could sow seed up to 50 feet, however not very accurate due to wind aggravation. The photo of the family group is at an annual Ithacan picnic held in the 1930. Behind the group are family cars which reflect the increasing economic prosperity of members of the Ithacan community. Many, however, travelled to the picnic in hired vans and later chartered buses. A sepia photograph with a white border of a family group sitting in front of a 1920-30s motor car.
