William Thomas George was born in Birmingham in 1884 and was a tin plate worker. He and his wife Ellene had a son Leslie Thomas George. The firm W T George & Co was formed sometime later. In 1939 his firm produced ship lamps. The Patent Number GB546575 on the lamp's plate was assigned to Leslie Thomas George in 1941 for improvements in, or relating to, ships' lanterns. From that time the patent number was affixed to their namufactured Meteorite lights. The ship navigation lamp is important as an example of the evolution of marine safety technology. Countries began passing laws and regulations in the 1830s that required ships to show navigation lights at night or in poor weather. From the late 1840s colours were standardised; red for portside of the vessel and green for starboard, a white masthead light, and a white light at anchor. By 1914 the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea was formed and continues, with decisions and notifications on improvements and changes.. Lamp; Portside ship's lamp is rounded in the front with two flat sides coming to a point at the rear. Glass has circular ridging. Metal handle with lid and clasp. The reflector has red colouring. Inscribed on fixed plates on the front, with maker's details and Patent number. This Meteorite lantern was made by W T George and Co Ltd, of Birmingham. This label comes from a Patersons Furniture and Home Furnishings Store. This company dates from the early 20th century with the first store in Smith Street, Fitzroy, Melbourne. One of the company’s many branch stores was in Warrnambool, based at 177-179 Liebig Street in the 1960s. At that time Patersons Pty Ltd had 70 branch stores.This label is of minor interest as a memento of a 1960s business in Warrnambool – Patersons Furniture Store.This is a buff-coloured thick card with two corners slightly cut away. Alan J. McConchie, a manufacturer’s agent, was elected to Kew Council in 1924, serving as a councillor for 21 years. He was elected Mayor of Kew in 1927-28, and again in 1945-46. During his second term as Mayor, he gained the support of Council for a pre-school plan which was the first of its kind in Victoria. The scheme established nursery schools and kindergartens as an extension of the existing baby health centres. Alan McConchie was active in Methodist Church work, and was one of the founders of the East Kew church, of which he was a trustee for 29 years. He was well known in the district as a cricketer and was a founder and past president of the East Kew Bowling Club. A Resident of Strathalbyn Street, he died in 1945 aged 60, while attending morning service at the East Kew Methodist Church. He is buried in the Burwood Cemetery. Handmade illuminated invitation to a notable Kew Mayor and MayoressAn illuminated invitation sent to the Mayor and Mayoress of Kew, Cr. and Mrs. McConchie, by a Citizens Committee to a Ball in the Kew Recreation Hall on 26 July 1928. The double page invitation is encased in an embossed maroon leather cover. The invitation was donated to the Society by a descendant of the McConchies in 2014.Inscription Cover: "To Councillor A.J. McConchie and Mrs McConchie". Inside cover in watercolour: "The Chairman Councillor George Ramsay and Members of the Citizens Committee desire the honor of the Company of HIS WORSHIP THE MAYOR OF KEW AND MRS. Mr & Mrs Le Couteur were both employed in the Education Department. Frank was an Inspector of Schools and Frances taught at Canterbury Primary for 20 years and at Chatham Primary in 1927, the year the school opened. She loved music, attended the Salvation Army and taught music and at the Sunday School at their chapel in Guildford Road. She moved to Inala Village. Patrick Thomas Dunne was registered with the Education Department in 1949. In January 1929, two parties were organised in the honour of the Wellers as they left Melbourne. Reverend Weller had been appointed assistant superintendent to the headquarters of the Missions to Seamen in London. They boarded the Osterley on the 22 January. Unfortunately Mrs Weller died in 1934. Many ladies on the photograph are yet to be identified. Members are advised of the 2017 Open Day Dates, Membership Renewals, Committee Meeting Dates, and Pharmaceutical Bottle Display in February & March, the Charman Family Marigold Gardens. CMHS and GEHS coordinated a Display of Market Gardeners at Stanley's Menswear, East Bentleigh in January and February. Members attended the Re-opening of Bentleigh Station December 2016. Members attend City of Kingston Historical Network meetings. Scanning and preserving of the Original CMHS Newsletters compiled by Mr T.A.Sheehy, is proceeding with equipment purchased with the KCC Community Grant. Hedley Potts, Ceramist, exhibited at GECC Gallery November 2016. Update on the progress of the August Rietman Exhibition in October 2017 describes the 'Lone Digger' memorials in Victorian country towns. History of the establishment of Bentleigh Library.
