This item is part of a collection donated by Pte Neil Ernest Swainston (3801127) who was called up for National Service but was only in the Australian Army from 24 Apr 71 to 20 Oct 72 a total of 1 year and 183 days. Reason for Pte Swainston’s discharge: Having completed the prescribed period of service in the ARAS (NS). During service Pte Swainston did 5 months with Recruit and Corps Training and regimental and rifleman duties with Infantry until his discharge.Pro-forma call-up notice issued by Department of Labour and National Service to N E Swainston on 6th April 1971 advising that he has been called up for national service with the Military Forces of the Commonwealth and is to present himself at Engineer's Training Depot, Swan Street, Melbourne on 21st April 1971 at 9.00am. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge Letter had been sent to the National Safety Council of Australia informing them of the recipient of their trophy for 1983. Council's reply form Gordon Lewis, addressed to Dennis Else, says they will obtain the trophy from previous winner and inscribe new winner's name on it and replica. Suggestion is that the trophy be kept at the College and displayed. This practice is followed at other Colleges. The Federal President Mr Clive Peterson to make the presentation. Derek Woolley replied and explained the College was in an interim period between Dennis Else and Derek Viner. This cash book comes from the National Bank of Warrnambool and the entries date from 1909 to 1911.The Warrnambool National Bank opened in 1867. The bank opened in temporary premises in Timor Street and in 1869 it moved to a new stone building on the corner of Timor and Kepler Streets which it occupied until 1975. The National Australia Bank still operates today in Koroit Street.This cash book is of considerable interest mostly because of the listing of local names in the early 20th Century.This is a ledger used as a cash book. It has printed red lines and hand written entries in black and red ink. It also has the National Bank stamp.
