Uniting Church Archives - Synod of Victoria
Photograph, Mitiamo UC Centenary & Rev. V. Raymond Hicks 11/11/1984, 11/11/1984
Victor Raymond Hicks (11/8/1903–19/11/1995) born at Ballarat. Trained at Otira and accepted as candidate for the ministry in 1927. Ordained 1934. Married Lillian Harvey, 4 children. Appointments to Mitiamo, Matimuk, Woomelang, Wodonga, Kerang, Springvale, Brunswick, North Fitzroy, Geelong West, Kyneton and Brown Hill (Ballarat). Chaplaincy in WW2 and at Box Hill hospital. The article about the Mitiamo church: "Fifty years ago the Rev. Raymond Hicks was minister at Mitiamo as it celebrated its Golden Jubilee. He returned for the centenary this year and powerfully preached on 'Lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes' (Isaiah 54:2). He spoke of the great need of the church today to have a passion to lead men and women to Christ. Also sharing in the service were the Rev. Ray Scholl, a Mitiamo member before entering the ministry, and present minister, the Rev. M. Thalheimer. The centenary weekend began with an old fashioned tea meeting and concert. The Sunday school hall housed a comprehensive display of photos and historical records dating back to the Bible Christian days of 1884. Mrs Thirza Phelan has researched and written the church history. FOOTNOTE: The first minister, Mitiamo's the Rev. Daniel Daley, preached at the Golden Jubilee service—Mr Hicks has followed an ancient tradition."Colour photograph of Rev. V. Ruyton Girls' School
Programme, Ruyton Girls' School, Ruyton Athletic Sports, 26 April 1950
The pamphlet documents the agenda for the Ruyton Girls' School athletics sports carnival hosted at Glenferrie Oval on Wednesday, 26 April 1950. The program outlines a series of activities to be undertaken by junior and senior school students (including day girls and boarders), including crossball, potato sack race, hockey dribbling, egg and spoon race, relays, baseball throwing, and obstacle courses. Each sport is divided into age brackets including under 14, under 16, and 16 and over. The pamphlet also acts as a scorecard, featuring columns for recording results, points scored, progress points and times. Ruyton Girls' School has an exceptional reputation in school sport. The School is a member school of Girls' Sport Victoria (GSV), a large sporting association involving 24 independent girls’ schools in Melbourne. Girls in the Senior School have the opportunity to compete in a range of sports over the four terms and at three major carnivals; Swimming and Diving, Cross Country and Track and Field. Ruyton also has a very successful Rowing program and participates in the Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships. The record has strong historic significance as it gives insight into the House system at Ruyton Girls' School; in particular, how the House system is used in a sports context. In the early 1920s, Ruyton was settling into its new home at Selbourne Road, Kew. At the time, students were arranged by their form (or year level) for lessons and other school activities. A collection of eight emblems and mottoes for each form group was published in the Ruytonian December 1922, although the genesis of each were left unexplained. With enrolments continually growing, Principal Miss Hilda Daniell felt a new basis of organisation would benefit students, giving them a broader outlook and something bigger to work for. She took inspiration from tradition and implemented a House system. The House system was adopted at Ruyton in September 1924 to "provide a new kind of co-operation and competition among the girls, especially in Sport." There were four houses, three of which were named after early Principals: Anderson, Bromby and Lascelles. There was also the School House, initially for boarders only. Some time after the publication of the Ruytonian in April 1928, the School House was renamed Daniell House, and had opened up to day girls. The account published by the newly formed Daniell House in the Ruytonian December 1928 reads, "we are rather bashful in presenting this account of our doings, for we are conscious of our newness. Our house has now the honour of being known as Daniell House." Four of the original eight form emblems were adopted by the new Houses, while the others were discarded. According to former teacher and author of the centenary history of Ruyton, Ms Majorie Theobald, the House system "gave a new focus for all competitive sport, which had previously been organised on a rather inequitable basis." The colours chosen for the Houses were cherry red for Anderson, royal blue for Bromby, gold for Lascelles, and pale blue for School (later Daniell). New students starting at Ruyton from Prep onwards are allocated to one of the following Houses with consideration to family connections and balance of numbers. The record's significance is further enhanced by its strong provenance, having been produced by Ruyton Girls' School and donated to the Archives by a familial connection of a former notable student.Pamphlet printed on cream coloured paper with navy blue ink. Peterborough History Group
Souvenir - Bay of Islands Championshiop trophy
Informal 12 hole golf event, played on Grand Final weekend. This event was started by a group of friends when there were few official golf tournaments played at Peterborough. The event was a stroke event with "mystery handicaps" ie you didn't know your handicap until you finished playing. The event was played on the Sunday of Grand Final weekend (except initially); Friday night traditionally was tea at Boggy Creek Pub and a Fishing Comp on Saturday. The name came about because three of the regular players, Ivan Voss, Bob Loader and R. McKendrick had a hut at the top of the dunes near Crofts Bay. They had a clinker boat on the beach as well. They subsequently built a house in Childers St. It ceased when the original participants were no longer able to play. The date of the first winner is 1980, last recorded winner is 1995. No longer played. further information required. Winners: 2nd August 1980 F. Tea Cup, Huddart Parker Line Tea Cup, 1950
Huddart Parker traded between 1876 and 1961. It was established in 1876 by James Huddart, T.J. Parker, John Traill and Captain T. Webb. The business rapidly expanded and was travelling between Melbourne and Sydney by 1882 and Melbourne to Adelaide from 1886. The Company was established in Geelong but moved its offices to Melbourne by 1890.It is likely this tea cup was used on the Huddart Parker shipping line some time from 1950 to the company's closure in 1961. Historically, the early establishment of the company in Geelong is significant for the region. The object is significant for its connection to Victorian transport from regional ports to larger cities. It is a good example of mid 20th Century hotelware and Duraline offerred 'unchippable crockery' for utilitarian purposes. Duraline was imported by Loftus Moran P/L who were based in South Melbourne and supplied the ware to hotels and institutions across Victoria. White glazed tea cup with blue transfer printed blue line around rim, blue geometric pattern around body and Huddart Parker line logo. Cup has a triangular shaped handle. Cup has a small hairline crack and a small chip.Dura Line/ Grafton China/ Made in Englad/ Loftus Moran Pty Ltd 1950huddart and parker line, geelong shipping, geelong maritime museum, duraline, grafton china, loftus moran p/l -

The elm trees can be seen on the left. The building up on the hill is the Mountjoy Guest House. ‘Mountjoy’ was built by the Paynter family in 1905. It had fourteen bedrooms, a dining room and sitting room, kitchen with a big wood burning range and verandahs on three sides. There were commanding views of the eastern ranges and the city to the west. Ellis Jeeves purchased ‘Mountjoy’ in 1908 and it soon became a popular tourist destination, the coach yards making it a centre of the district. ‘Mountjoy’ is a central feature of many photographs of Kalorama in the 1900s. The building burned down in 1975. Mt. Dandenong North was renamed Kalorama c1932.Black and white postcard showing a horse and cart on road between two buildings. On front ; Mt. Dandenong North. Photograph, "Shiloah" 1913
'Shiloah' was the home of Isaac Jeeves the younger - son of Isaac Jeeves the Valley Pioneer and brother of Ellis Jeeves. Isaac built this house himself using local timber he cut and split. It was ready for his marriage to Selina Leach of Bayswater in 1886. ‘Shiloah' was enlarged to take guests in the early 1900s. It was situated close to a beautiful fern gully and Isaac and his family capitalised on this by setting out walking tracks through the ferns. They charged 1/- to walk through and this included afternoon tea in a garden setting. ‘Shiloah’ was a popular tourist attraction but the making of the Olinda Creek Road destroyed the fern gullies and, by the 1930s, it was all finished.Black and white photograph of wooden structure with two wings and a central verandah. View of Kalorama Gap under snow taken in 1921. Mountjoy Guest House is at top right and Beulah Tea Rooms is in the centre. This photograph has a detailed inscription on the back handwritten by John Lundy-Clarke in 1974.Kalorama Gap under snow 1921 The leafless elm trees are low in the centre and the dual nature of the nearer one can be clearly seen, two small suckers of the older farther tree being twisted together in 1898 by Fred Jeeves. The older tree was planted 1880. Mrs Hands shop can be clearly seen, which was the Mount Dandenong North Post Office. The old Main Road runs up the centre of the picture and turns to the right and disappears behind “Mountjoy” the big guest house built by Paynters in 1905 and sold to Ellis Jeeves 1908, whose family ran it till 1943. At the bend of the road behind the big pine tree and the dark blackwood can be seen faintly the gable of Price’s house that contained the first shop on the mount. Above it is H Walker’s cottage on Ridge Road that still exists, his homestead is on the left of the picture on the same level. Below this house and to the left can be seen Ted Prices hay and corn store. The present estate agency lies between these two buildings, on the road which had recently been built. This can be seen winding from the lower left corner of picture to the left of the elms. The CRB had recently fenced the road and this is clearly seen as it circles behind trees in the left centre. Barber’s Road crosses CRB Road to the left of the dray under the leafless elm and the Coach Road dives down to the right just behind the pair of blackwoods to right of the elms. The picture was taken from just above the boundary of Isaac Jeeves’s selection Crown Allotment “C” (Jeeves Saddle) which stretched across the Gap to the other side of Mrs Hand’s shop, monopolising the gap from 1871 to 1879. Price’s house remains partly as the small house – “Mirra Laken”. kalorama gap, fiveways, post office, mountjoy, guest house, snow -

One of these is really two as two suckers of the further tree were twisted together by Fred Jeeves in 1898 and grew as one tree. The other was planted in 1880. The shop is the shop of Mrs Eliza Hand and daughter Florence. The closed in far end of the verandah was the Mount Dandenong North Post Office. The large house is “Mountjoy” owned and run by the Jeeves Family from 1908 till 1943. It was built in 1905 by the Paynters who sold to Ellis Jeeves in 1908.He moved his line of coaches from “Kalorama” his old homestead and housed the horses in a line of stables behind “Mountjoy”. Price’s house, which contained their shop, the first one on the mountain, opened 1906, can be seen faintly behind the pine tree opposite the bend in the road, which was the main road then and now is Ridge Road. The Price’s house just shows in two tiny pieces, one on each side of the pine tree half way up. The house to the right of and high up the pine tree is Walker’s cottage which exists today opposite Jack Kidd’s home at the far edge of Lt 2 Village Settlement and was between Main Road and Barbers Road which runs down the left behind the elms. Walker’s homestead can be seen near left edge of picture 2/3 way up. The roof of the Methodist Church shows among trees left of picture. Melbourne Legacy
Film, "His Other Family - A Legacy"
10 minute sound and colour, which has faded to red. Begins with an unseen business man asking his secretary to ring his wife to tell her he will be late and is going to visit one of his other families. We see him driving his car, which is full of smoke from his pipe, whilst the narrator explains what Legacy does. The Legatee sheds his coat and trilby hat to play cricket with the fatherless son before having tea and cake with the widow whilst her story and that of her two children is told - details of the Legacy assistance are given. The film then moves to Legacy House where exercise classes are taking place and the smoking pipe makes a reappearance. Information about Legacy's work for the health and wellbeing of Junior Legatees is given, as well as details of the Mother's Club. The film shows the many Legacy committees at work before moving on to holidays organised for Junior Legatees at a beach side cottage - there is no indication of which city is featured at this stage but the beach could be Bondi. Widows are shown meeting at Legacy House, and then we see more elderly widows at Lady Gowrie House. Kyle Williams House for convalescent children is featured and is located near Sydney, which would indicate that the film is about Sydney Legacy. Archbold House, a hostel for girls, and Glen Mervyn House for boys are also featured, as is Cull House for boys undertaking apprenticeships. The film notes that there were 88,000 widows and children in Legacy's care, and the pipe smoking Legatee is seen driving the fatherless boy to tennis practice before the film concludes by saying that Legacy is contributing to the future of the nation. This film has been digitised to preserve its content. Melbourne Legacy gratefully acknowledges the support of the Victorian Government and Public Record Office Victoria for making this possible.A visual record of life in Sydney after the war and the huge number of children to have lost their father in WWII. The commitment of Legacy to giving them a better childhood and the amount of work done by Legatees is impressive.Khaki coloured film cannister with yellowing label.Handwritten 'John Gray Prods' and 'His other family - A Legacy' / '16mm Comp E/Color Print'sydney, residences, junior legatee -
