Yields information and demonstrates aspects about Ballarat's destination rolls used in trams after 1967 when these rolls replaced those with the opposite colour arrangementDestination roll black lettering on white fabric background used in Ballarat from late 1967 until closure, replaced white letters on black background. Layout of individual destinations follows that shown in K.S.Kings, "Ballarat Tramways" - see image file for copy. Main letters are 150 high. On rear of roll, has abbreviated destinations painted in black paint to enable drivers to locate easier the individual destinations. See Reg. item 844 for a white on black roll, same destinations and order and details of use. Destination roll - white lettering on black background. Destination roll used at the TB Footscray depot. Has stencil words "STOP" on top and bottom, stencilled miniature destinations on rear to assist drivers to locate the destination. Letters are 146 high. Roll consists of a unpainted section, 520 long at top, 2280 long painted section and a 1500 long unpainted section at base. Has been rolled using a 16 diameter wooden dowel - 925 long. Destinations in order from top are: DEPOT; WILLIAMSTOWN RD; RAILWAY STATION; RUSSELL ST; BALLARAT RD; SPECIAL; FOOTBALL GROUND; EXPLOSIVES FACTORY; ORDANCE FTY; AUNITION FACTORY; PYROTECHNIC FACTORY; CITY VIA HAYMARKET. Destination roll that was used in Malvern Depot trams, Melbourne, until the late 1960's. Roll on linen, with white letters on black background. Has stencilled words "STOP" on top and bottom of rolls, stencilled miniature destination on rear to assist driver to locate the destination. Letters approx. 140 high. Roll consists of an unpainted section 535 long at top and 360 long unpainted section at base. Painted section approx. 7.2m long. Roll has oil and dirt stains in the middle portion, but the last three destinations are very worn with the black paint in a deteriorated condition. Roll consists of an unpainted section 140 long at top and 330 long unpainted section at base. Painted section approx. 7.6m long. Destination roll that was used in Camberwell Depot trams, Melbourne, until the late 1960's. Roll on linen, with white letters on black background. Has stencilled words "STOP CAMB" on bottom of roll, generally stencilled, though a few handwritten, miniature destination on rear to assist driver to locate the destination. Letters approx. 140 high. Roll consists of an unpainted section 525 long at top and 165 long unpainted section at base. Painted section approx. 9.9m long. Has on the bottom of the roll, a section which has been added to the roll or repaired by adding a new section. Some repainting of the old destinations also apparent. The middle of three "CITY" destinations and other parts adjacent have been repaired. Demonstrates aspects of the Ballarat Tramways fare system at the time of the one man trams, tokens which could be pre purchased by travellers and save time when boarding trams. See notes on file re these eg Reg Item 1801.Fare token- 2d - 21mm diameter - green celluloid - with "B.E.T." in large capitals on front centre of token and words "Ballarat Electric Tramways 1913" on circumference. On reverse in large font "2" and a small font "D" at top of the two - indicating token had a value of two pence. Extract from A. Bradley "The Golden City and its Tramways" about tokens and why. "The ESCo worked out its procedures from its own experience. A "pay as you enter" system was used on city-bound cars, and a "pay as you leave" system on outward-bound cars. On Sundays during busy periods this was reversed on the Gardens lines, but conductors were still required on this line to cope with the heavy summer holiday traffic. Trams 1 to 18 were altered by altering the end seating, placing gates on doorways and "pay as you enter" and "pay as you leave" signs. Once on board, passengers paid their coins into a farebox mounted behind the driver, which was fitted with glass windows and mirrors to enable the driver to see the coins slide into the box - a form of "moral check on passengers". Regular passengers could buy pink or green celluloid tokens at a discount price, to save the motorman having to issue tickets and give change." Preprinted Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board form with rounded corners, as a Certificate of Service for Leslie James Denmead, dated 29 Dec. 1948. Form 3/278, July 1947 typed with Name, positions held and dates From to Until. All entries have been underlined in red. Gives date of leaving, conduct and service ("Excellent") and signatures of person and Manager. Held positions of Conductor, Bus Driver, Bus starter, Inspector. Signed by L. J. Denmead and by J. Rigaldi (?) District Officer, for the Manager, F. G. Wraith. Sheet has a watermark "BANK M EXTRA STRONG" Not in good condition, has been repaired with 'sticky tape' and is torn. Set of three black and white photographs taken at the time of the launch of the four postcard set of the trams, shortly before closure. Black and white photograph of SEC Ballarat No. 21 decorated as the Ballarat Base Hospital's Trambulance in support of the Hospital's Yuille House Remodelling Plan, $50,000 appeal. Photographed by Bob Prentice at the Mt. Pleasant terminus on 13/5/1969. Tram is painted white - based on the Myer's Christmas tram of 1968 (See Reg. Item 1881) and the 1969 Begonia Festival (See Reg. Item 1886). Tram has destination of "Mt Pleasant", a sign under the driver's windows "Give till it hurts" and under the headlight "TRAMBULANCE". On the side of the tram has various images related to the hospital, roof advertisement board "Ballarat Base Hospital $50,000 Appeal - Yuille House Remodelling Plan" and on the base of the sides "Keep with the Pace Support the Base" sign. In the background at the terminus is the Mt. Pleasant Milk Bar shop.
