Soldiers’ Memorial World War 1 with wreaths at base. The "Girl's Remembrance League" worked to raise money for the memorial to be built. Cost was 643.0.0 pounds. The memorial was unveiled on Saturday 10th Nov. 1923, by Archdeacon T.P. Bennett, (a respected pardre and old Stawell boy). Photo was copied from original donated by Mrs. L Matthew's whose mother Mrs. A. V. Cornish was a member of the Girls Remembrance League. Memorial was partly built by Robson & Grey, when partnership dissolved Mr. G.M. Robson completed the work. This book, a 2006 second edition of a book first published in 2004, includes additional material in the second edition. It has been meticulously compiled from a variety of official war records and local information and is the most comprehensive work available on the records of World War One enlistments from Warrnambool and district. Australia’s military involvement in World War One was highly significant and a most important event in the history of our growth as a nation and our newfound place on the world stage. This book is very important as it gives a comprehensive coverage of the people from Warrnambool and district who enlisted in World War One. It is an essential reference for researchers of those times and for family history recorders. This is a soft-cover book of 270 pages. It is the 2016 second edition of the book by Blair & Affleck of Great War Enlistments from Warrnambool and District. It has a blue cover with an image of a World War One battle scene in the background covering both the front and the back cover. The front cover has an inset colour photograph of the soldier figure from the Warrnambool War Memorial and the back cover has a colour photograph of the World War One Honor Roll from Christ Church, Warrnambool. The titles etc on the cover are printed in yellow. Frances Rigg was a local business identity in Kew, at one stage managing the local branch of the English, Scottish and Australian (ES&A) Bank at 175 High Street from c. 1920 until the 1940s. After Francis Rigg’s death, the collection of buttons and medallions was inherited by his son, Ken Rigg (1922-2014). The collection was subsequently donated to the Kew Historical Society in 2015 by Francis' grandson, Adrian Rigg, at the time of the Gallipoli & Beyond Commemoration in 2015. The collection covers a period of almost 40 years. The majority of the buttons are patriotic buttons, issued and sold during and immediately after the First World World War (1914-1918) to raise funds for national and overseas causes. The collection also includes a number of locally significant sporting event buttons and sporting club medallions, issued in the 1920s and 1930s.Patriotic and other pressed tin buttons and badges were produced in large numbers in the first decades of the twentieth century. By nature, insubstantial and ephemeral, they have not always survived. The collections of badges, buttons and medallions in the Kew Historical Society collection is homogenous and yet diverse, ranging from buttons sold to raise funds for the war efforts in 1914-18 and 1939-45, to those used at festivals and sporting events. Because of the manufacturing process, many surviving buttons and badges have been affected by inadequate storage, suffering from oxidisation and physical damage. These survivors are now historically and socially significant artefacts, revealing much about the attitudes and values of the period in which they were produced. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. The date is unknown. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. It is a photo of two school children laying a wreath at the Cenotaph while the main service is at the Shrine steps. They may have been junior legatees. It was with another photo of junior legatees laying a wreath which had two labels with conflicting names. It appears to be the same boy, Peter Manning. The label that could refer to this photo says: 'At Melbourne Legacy's Annual School Children's Anzac Commemoration this year Junior legatees, Gayle Goulding and Peter Manning representing all Junior Legatees, laid a wreath at the foot of the World War Two Memorial.' That would place it as being either 1981 or 1983. Item was in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different School Student ceremonies. This is an album of Australian official photographs of Australian participation in World War One. Enlargements of the photographs could be obtained in the 1920s from the Australian War Museum in the Exhibition Buildings in Melbourne. World War One (1914-1918) was a highly significant event, not only in world history, but also in Australian history – a time when Australia participated to a strong degree, with a great number of Australian men and women dying in the war. These photographs were important in the 1920s as they showed war scenes and military activities that were not available to the public when the war was in progress. They are still important today showing Australian military action in World War One, a signal event in Australia’s history. The number of World War One War Memorials in most Australian towns and small settlements is an indication of the effect on the Australian people of the sacrifice of the lives of so many young people. Warrnambool was just one place in Australia that built a war memorial in the 1920s and continues today to remember World War One heroes as well as those from later wars. This is a brown photograph album containing 72 black and white photographs of Australian soldiers in World War One (Gallipoli, Palestine, France etc). The photographs have been commercially produced. There are four photographs to each page mounted on card. The cover is cardboard and the pages are bound with multi-coloured string. Gordon Spittle was the youngest of Three brothers. He grew up in Creswick and attended Creswick Grammar School. Gordon purchased 'Mt Cavern' in 1912. It had 4 years of a 10 year lease to run. His mother and father took delivery of it on 1 April 1916. They lived there and farmed it until Gordon returned from active service in May 1919. S. Gordon Spittle married Violet Holmes and both lived at "Mt Cavern" until their deaths. Gordon died in 1942 aged 51. Violet Holmes-Spittle died in 1949 aged 56. Your very fine and interesting letter dated Feb 15th came to hand to-day and needless to add was delighted to receive it, and can promise you that I'll answer it at my earliest opportunity. We are now having a better time since we came to this part, as we are able to enjoy a little of city life, although we have a good deal more work to do, & which is mostly carting goods to & from the ships & railway stations etc, all of which is interesting & quite a change from our life on the Desert.
