Book, Science Museum, "Melbourne's Cable Trams - A brief history", 1975
Book produced by the Science Museum provides a brief history of the cable tram system, with photos. Includes details of the engine houses, the cable, the grip mechanism, the ticket bell punch, and why "Mind the Curve". Has a list of acknowledgments. Published shortly after or at the time of the launch of the tram in the enclosure in Russell St. The additional sheet with the book provides details for each route of route, the location of the city terminus, suburban terminus, running time, night light, route length, first and last car for each day of the week. Image of Ballarat tram 27 at the Mt Pleasant terminus with the driver/conductor putting the trolley pole back on the overhead wire. The pole on the left shows two tram stop signs. The shop on the right has adverts for The Sun, Robur Tea, TV Week and Peters Ice Cream. This photograph was used in an interpretative panel at the terminus installed in 2020 by the local history group. An electrified tram route from Melbourne along High Street replaced an original Horse Tram that terminated at the Kew Cemetery. This new tram only reached the bridge over the Outer Circle railway at the Harp Junction. Photo shows one of the Maximum Traction Bogies trams built for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide in 1913. Photographed in the Malvern depot yard - shows the very sharp curves. Most likely a newspaper photograph reproduced by the donor. The trams were only numbered on their ends at this time. Has two uniformed tramway men standing by the drop centre doors.
