Sign - GOLDFIELDS SIGN
Metal sign with embossed lettering, the corners have been folded over with mounting holes put through the thicker sections. The embossing reads: 'This Land is Auriferous and Subject to Mining Conditions.' The sign is very rusted and there is no trace of the original paintwork. A handwritten note with the sign reads: 'This sign was found covered by grass and eucalyptus leaves etc., at the side of the road leading past the Eucy. Factory in the vicinity of the Whipstick forest. Found in 1977 by Jean and Ross Miller, Wireless Street, Kangaroo Flat. At the time of scanning the lead article. A Herald newspaper article titled 'Melbourne's First Christmas by John Lahey.' This is Lahey's account of the first year of settlement of Melbourne. Six people landed first in Melbourne - Mary Gilbert, the first white woman to land in Melbourne plus five men landed from Fawkner's boat in August 1835. Mary gave birth to the first white child born in Melbourne - John Port Phillip Gilbert. The trials and tribulations of the first settlers in Melbourne are outlined in this article. Article on George Henry Cole - Methodist minister born 7/12/1859 at Mickelham, Victoria, son of William Cole, a selector who arrived in Australia 1849. Ordained 1886, served at Sale, Murtoa, Eaglehawk, Armadale and Geelong. He was a minister of the Primitive Methodist Church. Methodist Union, 1902 enabled him to implement his brainchild, a boy's training farm and gave agricultural instruction to complement spiritual reformation and general education. A tour of New Zealand raised funds to purchase land for Tally Ho at Burwood. He was Superintendent 1904 - 1919. Died 1919. This subdivision plan for the ‘Myrtle Park Estate’ relates to land sales in Emerald, Victoria, rather than to the subdivision of the same name in East Kew (1913-16). The subdivision in Emerald included 32 one-acre lots facing Torley Road, Government Road (now Rawhiti and Wong Hee Roads) Beaconsfield Road (now Old Beaconsfield Road). On the plan, an unnamed creek flows through allotments 8-12 on the east side of the Estate.
