The charity organisation, Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild, was formed within the Missions to Seamen Institute to provide a home away from home, for visiting seamen. Selina Sutherland was a 19th century nurse and social welfare reformer. She was particularly concerned with the welfare of destitute children. She founded the Sutherland Homes for Children which moved to Diamond Creek in around 1909. This biography was written by J. C. Jessop in 1958. Group of 11 young men photographed holding babies from the Methodist Babies' Home. The photograph was probably taken to mark the first birthday of the Babies' Home in 1930. The money for the property at 12 Copelen Street, South Yarra, was largely raised by the Young Men's section of the Methodist Church's Laymen's Missionary Movement. These two chairs are Grant Featherston prototypes of the 1947 Relaxation Chairs. These chairs came from the Boyd family's Camberwell home (666 Riversdale Road, Camberwell, formerly 158 Riversdale Road) and were originally upholstered with webbing. The fixings were modified in the final product Relaxation chairs. Robin Boyd designed the Ivanhoe home of Grant and Mary Featherston (1967).Dark orange with black fine check woven wool. Stathi Raftopoulos is pictured with a group of friends his home cinema which was located in the basement of his home in North Balwyn. The basement area also contained film and cinema memorabilia collected by Stathi over the decades. The seating is from an old cinema. Pictured is Stathi Raftopoulos (standing) and seated to the right is Michael Black and Paul Connell. Pictured is the open fire used for cooking that would have been found in a traditional Ithacan home. Whilst most now use electric and portable gas appliances, these open cooking areas can still be found in the kitchens of many of the old homes on the island. The mortar and pestle and baking dishes pictured are sill used today in the preparation of traditional dishes.Cooking and food is an intrinsic part of Ithacan culture and plays an important role in maintaining identity and traditions for the Melbourne's Ithacan community. Recipes and particular cooking techniques are passed on from generation to generation.
