Post Office lane ran from Main Street to Reid Street, and much of it is now the car park for the IGA Supermarket. The Main Street end between the supermarket and the post office is closed to all but pedestrian traffic, and is now called Gollings Square. Wal Jack kept extensive notes on railways and tramways around the world, provided by his correspondents and research. This set of sheets lists PCC-type streetcars or trams ordered by North American cities between 1936 and 1947, including a summary of who ordered the most cars. Includes note on the builders. When compared to the reference, there are errors or differences. Badge - Gripman - 13 - Clifton Hill, Tramway Board, c1916
Use to identify a tramway employee - Clifton Hill car house or depot. Would have allowed free travel when in uniform to and from work. Used possibly from mid 1910's when the Tramway Board was formed until it was replaced by the MMTB in 1921 or when a different identification system was implemented. Most likely made by Stokes and Sons - possible imprint covered by the leather part.Demonstrates the method of identifying cable tram employees. Round pressed brass badge with the words "Gripman" pressed into the centre of the badge around the top portion of the badge, the letters "C13H. Has a nickel-plated finish with the Tramways Board logo on the lower part of the badge. On the rear of the badge, two metal lugs have been soldered onto the badge and a two-piece leather strap with a buttonhole cut into it to enable it to be worn on a uniform. Yields information about Moorabool Street Geelong, colour publicity photograph, summer clothing and the street scape during the early 1950's. Has a strong association with a commercial collection - Candy footwear.Colour print of a colour photograph held by the Candy Footwear collection (two slightly different prints) and a black and white version, of No. 31 in Moorabool Street, with the destination of BEACH, at the corner of Malop St, 1948. Has a number of people joining and leaving the tram, and walking across to the footpath. Also a number of bicycles in the photograph. People are wearing summer clothes. Printed on Agfa paper. In the background is the T&G building, Rockman's, Savoia Cafe, and Hitchcocks (?) Pty Ltd building. In an envelope that contained the photographs (now with the worksheet) is "pics and negatives for Geelong 31 / copy Candy Footwear framed illustration." William Wright was a gold miner and his wife's name was Sarah. They lived at Laura Villa, Smeaton. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank Wright their son was born and attended Smeaton State School and was a renown resident of Smeaton. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia. Black and White print of Bendigo SECV Bendigo tram 18 at Charing Cross terminus for the Eaglehawk route with a single truck car crossing behind heading for Golden Square. Trams have dash canopy lights, but no large white strip under the drivers windows. Photo not dated but appears to be at during early 1960's. Tram 18 has White Horse Whiskey ad on front dash panel, SEC Roof ad "Electricity best for Cooking" and a "CASTROL" ad, and showing destination of "Eaglehawk". I wonder who the other two are? The chap facing the camera could be Neal Elphick? Our hobby and its people are often more interesting than the topic? Sign, Australian Electric Traction Association (AETA), "Australian Electric Traction Association Special Car", 1950's
Sign, painted onto a MMTB auxiliary destination board of the type that could hang on the front of a Melbourne tram car with the words "Australian Electric Traction Association Special Car". Used for special tours by the AETA. Metal sign, fitted with metal hanging brackets, riveted to sign on both sides. Manufactured by rolling the outer edges over a 4mm diameter steel rod. Has been painted over a an old sign "Direct to Trotting Showgrounds??? via Abbotsford St 3d". Second sign painted over a sign that had on one side "Via Elsternwick" and "Via Balaclava Road". The signs were received wrapped in part of the "The Age, Thursday March 23 1961" - sample retained - see image 4. Gives details of the itinerary for the trip using a 280HP Rail car trip with the forward portion via North Geelong. Duplicated using the Gestetner process. Note the knowledge of the time, with horse tram bodies being reused to form some of the early ESCo. trams. Second copy from donation of the Tom Murray Estate added 25-11-2016 and 3rd copy from Keith Kings papers added 19-3-2017. A copy of this document ex Charles Craig collection was replaced by a better condition one ex Tom Murray - 25-11-2016. Record revised and updated for this replacement.
