Work on paper - ink and watercolour, Annette Meikle, Chinese Elm - Corner Beach Road and Hampton Street, 1977
In 1977, artist Annette Meikle undertook a commission to illustrate a book recording stories of places and people in the Bayside area. It was published in 1978 as Sandringham Sketchbook, with text by Elizabeth Waters. The sketches were intended to record remaining examples of Bayside’s early architecture and environment, as well as reflect newer architectural changes. Meikle went on to donate 22 of these sketches to Bayside City Council in 2003. The Chinese Elm tree illustrated here marks the site of ‘Esmeralda’ which stood at at 312-314 Hampton Street, Hampton. It was a rambling house built in 1872 by Alfred William Harston and demolished in the 1970s. The elm is thought to be over 150 years old and was preserved by Council when flats were built on the site. It is recognised in the Significant Tree Register of Bayside City Council.Annette Meikle, Chinese Elm - Corner Beach Road and Hampton Street 1977, ink and watercolour, 33.8 x 23.7 cm. Painting - oil on board, Clarice Beckett, Cliff path, c.1929
Painted from Beaumaris Cliffs looking over to Mentone this work is a characteristic example of Beckett's ability to create a sense of place with an economy of means. The bands of floated colour create a flattened 'modern' space while still rendering a truthful impression of the location. oil on boardbeach, coast, cliff, path, tree, clarice beckett, beaumaris, beaumaris bay, bay, bayside, water, meldrum school, painting, mentone -

Queenscliffe Maritime Museum
Clothing - Belt decoration
She was nearing the end of her voyage, close inshore off Cape Otway at Curdies Inlet (now called Schomberg Reef), east of Peterborough and 150 miles westward of Melbourne. When the wind suddenly dropped the ship drifted onto an uncharted reef and became stuck fast. There was no loss of life ans all the passengers, crew and mails were taken off by a passing coastal steamer, the Queen, out of Port Fairy the following morning. The passengers' luggage and some of the cargo was rescued, but the weather worsened and work was abandoned and cargo littered the beach. The wreck was sold for salvage to local merchants: two were drowned in attempts to reach her. It became a popular wreck site for diving and over 100 relics have been handed in. The bell of the ship is in the Warrnambool Museum, southern Victoria. Relics at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum include a cannon, a communion set, a brass candlestick, and a diamond ring.A diamond shaped brass belt decorationschomberg, salvage, peterborough -
