That would make it the dance room at Legacy House Swanston St. The blue and red walls haven't been seen in other photos of that era as they are normally in black and white. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. This photo is one of the oldest known photographic records of an Australian Rules football team in the Bacchus Marsh area. Australian Rules football was played in this area as early as the 1870s. An organized competition to play regular matches was formed in the early years of the twentieth century. This photo records the premiership winning team of 1912 in the match played against Melton. The match was reported in the Bacchus Marsh Express of 31 August 1912. The names of the players are not recorded on this photo, but the Express records the names of Marsh, Fairbank, Northcott, Palmer, Roy Simpson, Morris, Tom Grant, Jack Taylor, Bert Jones, Portingale (c.), Densley Bros., Wittick, Harry Grant, Leonard, Odgers, Bodycote.This item has historic and social significance as an image of one of the early sporting teams of Bacchus Marsh and district. It is a typical example of team photographs of this era. Images of a Legatees marching to the grave of Legacy founder, Sir Stanley Savige in Kew Cemetery (now Boroondara General Cemetery). Legatee Savige died in 1954, a few months after his wife, and they are buried together. The slides show a group of legatees marching to the grave and placing two wreaths on it after a service. Was with 500 other slides which have been digitised as best as possible. The original images were not well focussed and the film had deteriorated and colour turned very pink. Several photos are marked 4, 11, 12, 13, and were taken at the same time (see items 02513 - 02516) Stanhope was a residence run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were deceased servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. Stanhope generally looked after girls over 14 either studying or working. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. A photo of a group of female junior legatees in sporting outfits entering the Annual Demonstration with a prop of a totem pole. There are 14 young girls and part of the audience is visible. Legacy clubs ran classes for junior legatees for many years such as gymnastics, swimming or dancing classes. It was part of providing for the children of their deceased comrades. The skills they learned were show cased in an annual demonstration usually at the Melbourne Town Hall. It appears to be photo taken professionally, as there are several photos of different classes (see 00862 - 00873) perhaps to record Legacy classes for promotion purposes. The minutes of the Melbourne Legacy Wives Association from 1968 to 1978. The wives of legatees established the Legacy Wives' Association to help support their husbands' work. They often helped the widows' prepare costumes for the children' annual demonstrations. They also held golf tournaments and events that helped fundraise. The meeting in 1968 mentions the president of the Legacy Wives Association was Norma Cooper, who was the wife of the President of Melbourne Legacy in 1968. President J E Cooper also attended and spoke at the meeting.A record of the business practices for formal meetings in the 1970s and that Legatees' wives provided a valuable support to Legacy.Red cloth covered minute book with lined pages. A report submitted by the Sub-Committee appointed at the meeting of 20th April 1956 to be considered on 1st May 1957 at the Melbourne Town Hall meeting. Legatee James Gillespie advised that the original author selected to write the biography of Sir Stanley Savige had withdrawn, and Legatee Gillespie offered four alternative authors for the Committee to choose from. Part of the paperwork chronicling the early planning for the biography, which was eventually written by W.B. Destination roll used to indicate to passengers the destination or route of the tram. At night the roll was backlit by two light bulbs fitted to the destination box on the tram. Item used in Geelong until 1956. Based on the handwritten marking, painted in July 1946. Used on the side destinations of either the Pengelley or the trams built for MESCo trams such as Geelong No. 2. See Reg Item 2906 for another smaller side destination roll and 4122 for a wide roll fitted to bogie tram No. 39 and 9618 wide roll fitted to a Pengelley tram. Notice to traffic staff dated 19/1/1955, Kew Depot about not punching of the Bundy Clock at Victoria Bridge during the AM peak as a temporary measure. Trams that shunted at this location were required to record the clock. This is possibly as the result of an incident at this location with motor car traffic and the difficulty to access the clock in heavy traffic. In September 1937, a group of ladies met to form a Ladies’ Committee to assist the General Committee in raising funds for a Public Hall. Those present were Mrs Allen, Mrs Bowman, Mrs Hickey, Mrs Rains, Mrs Boake and Mrs Lyon. As there were only six present, they elected to remain in the interim as a Social Committee to arrange catering, etc., for the two dances that had been arranged for September 29th and October 30th of that year. Both those dances proved a great success. Mrs McAdie joined the committee in October. The Ladies’ Committee was officially formed at a combined meeting of the General and Ladies’ committees held on April 6th, 1938. Mrs Boake agreed to be President, Mrs Lyon as Secretary and Mrs Rains as Assistant Secretary. Other members included Mrs Browne, Mrs Forde, Mrs Jarrold, Mrs Bradbury and Mrs Taylor. By 1941 their numbers had grown to include Matron Wilson, and Mesdames Andrew, Brinkkotter, Cloney, Walker, Parsons, Crick, Ballenger, Travena, Hurst, Shields and Le Brocq . A number of these ladies eventually became part of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Eltham War Memorial Trust. Councillor A. Brinkkotter, secretary of the Hall Committee, noted that Eltham had succeeded, after many long years of fighting, in erecting a new hall and civic centre which had been badly needed. “It took a long time to convince the Council of the necessity for a new hall and civic centre in Eltham.” “The councillors, in looking after the interests of all sections of the rate payers, could not see that such a move was necessary. But finally the Hall Committee proved that such a move was not only advisable, but would prove a financial asset to the Shire.” “This committee had to put down £1,500 in cash before the work on the hall began, and to enable the committee to do this, residents loaned them money free of interest for 12 months. In addition the committee has guaranteed to pay the Council £100 a year for the next ten years.” “The borrowed money has to be repaid to the lenders, and I hope that the public will realise this and support the functions which have been and will be arranged by the Hall Committee to enable them to return the money as soon, as possible.” At the opening gala for the Public Hall, Mr. G. L. Chandler, M.L.C. said “It speaks volumes for those people who have worked for many years for the hall. I know of no other place where the residents have handed over £1,500 for the erection of a hall and guaranteed the balance of the cost. You will always find the few who say ‘Time is not opportune.’ In these days you have to make your opportunities.” “Before any town can advance, a civic spirit must exist in the residents, and I hope the people will support the Hall Committee which has the interests of this district at heart.”Background workings for the funding of a Public Hall at Eltham. The funding was provided by public subscription and the money loaned to Council to build the hall. The hall was part of the new Eltham Shire offices located at the corner of Main Road and Arthur Street. After a quiet period, interest in bookplates in Australia began to increase in the early 1970s, Entrepreneurial art and book collectors such as Edwin Jewell and others commissioned multiple Bookplate designs from a range of well known fine artists. At a 1997 meeting in Melbourne of the Ephemera Society of Australia Edwin Jewell and others announced the formation of the Australian Bookplate Society. The society was instrumental in promoting the art of the bookplate through establishment of the Australian Bookplate Design competition. The competition includes a design award for secondary schools students.
