This photograph was given to Horace Lawson on the occasion of his retirement in 1918 as Town Clerk of Warrnambool. The photographs are of the Town Clerk, the Town Surveyor, the Mayor and Councillors in June 1918. The Mayor, William Swinton and the Town Clerk, Horace Lawson are in civic robes. Horace Lawson had a distinguished career as the Town Clerk of Warrnambool from 1893 to 1918 (which is actually 25 years, not 30 years as stated on the photograph). Lawson was a keen cyclist and a member of the Warrnambool Volunteer Army Corps. He left Warrnambool in 1918 to take up the position in Melbourne as Secretary of the Municipal Association of Victoria. The photographer, Arthur Jordan, working in Warrnambool at the end of the 19th century and in the early 20th century, was well-known, particularly for his photographs of civic affairs. This photograph is of considerable interest as it concerns the retirement of Horace Lawson, an influential and highly-respected municipal officer in Warrnambool at a time of great growth in the town/city.This is a black and white photograph in a wooden frame with a heavy card inset and glass covering. Dr Rosalie Triolo is the History Method lecturer in the Faculty of Education at Monash University and is active as a writer and presenter in state and national History Education communities. She taught for 13 years in country and metropolitan Victorian government secondary schools, and has been involved for 30 years with the History Teachers’ Association of Victoria. She p[resents regularly to academic and general audiences on different aspects of the Great War and Australian education, and has led battlefield tours for History teachers as well as Australian History fellowships for student-teachers. One of these booklets contains the Minutes of Procedure of the Annual Session of the Municipal Association of Victoria in October 1939. The other three items are booklets containing the rules of golf as approved by the Golf Club of St Andrews in 1920. The four items belonged to Rolf Crawley who had a private surveying, engineering and architects practice in Warrnambool and was also the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. The Shire of Warrnambool existed from 1863 to 1994. Rolf Crawley’s grandfather, father and uncle were also engineers and worked in that capacity or as the Shire Secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire. The items came into the possession of Michael Hand who took over the private surveying business of Rolf Crawley in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society acquired the items, along with several ledgers and other Crawley memorabilia, from the estate of Michael Hand. These booklets are of minor interest as items that belonged to Rolf Crawley, the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool in the mid 20th century..1 This is a buff-coloured booklet of 121 pages. The St John Ambulance Association, which was founded in 1877 in England. Its first uniformed first-aiders were founded in 1887 as the St John Ambulance Brigade. These two have since been merged into a single association. St John Ambulance now have over 40 national organisations, many of which are affiliated with Johanniter International, and over 300,000 volunteers worldwide. The Order of St John owns the brand name in most countries (with the notable exception of India, which has a St John Ambulance organisation that is unconnected to the international movement). Logos vary in different countries but always contain the eight-pointed white Maltese cross as the essential identifier. Like the Order, St John Ambulance associations accept members of all religions. Their geographic organisation differs from the Order, and they have to contend with the differing national laws, medical practices and cultures of countries. The letter from Eric Harding to Legacy President Ron Foskett in 1978 was in response to a call for information and photos for the archive that was being compiled. Legatees Frank Doolan and Brian Armstrong were making an attempt to collect items relevant to Legacy's history for an official archive project The letter suggests L/- Eric Harding provided a photo in which Cyril Smith, Dudley Treagent and others appear but that photo was not with the letter. It also referenced the photo that appears here, with of a group of people at a weekend party at Ocean Grove. No names are identified but it must have been a Legacy event for it to be sent to the archive project. It could be Legatees and their wives and children socialising together at a weekend event in Ocean Grove. The Pollard Archway was named for Charles Pollard, who was the son of an early settler at Bonegilla. Charles Pollard was awarded the MBE for his involvement in community service, he was Secretary of the Murray Valley Shows Association, Shire President in 1926-27, 1945-46 and 1946-47. He was Foundation President of the Wodonga Show Society, and North-Eastern representative of the Dairymen’s Association of Victoria. The arch is 29 metres wide and 15 metres high and consists of two boomerangs coming together to form an archway. Originally spanning across a single carriageway of the Lincoln Causeway, the arch was opened by Princess Alexandra of Kent in 1959 and was built for £1230. When the Country Roads Board said the causeway would have to be duplicated in 1973, a new home was required for the arch. The arch was moved in 1975 to allow for widening of the Lincoln Causeway and spent some time in storage. It was re- erected in Hamilton Smith Drive in 1982 after restoration by the Rotary Club of Belvoir-Wodonga. At the request of the Wodonga Show Society, the arch was moved to the entrance of the showgrounds in 1982. Born in Bendigo and trained as a nurse in the 1950s, Sonia Jill O’Brien devoted a lifetime to social and environmental issues at both the state and local level. From her work in the 1960s with the Family Planning Association of Victoria, of which she was a founding member, through to the 1990s as a member of the Ethics Committee of the Department of Health, she supported efforts to improve women’s health and reproductive rights. At the local level she was most active on committees that worked to save the natural and built environment. The Power-line Action Group, the Studley Park Conservation Society, and the Yarra Bend Park Trust all benefitted from her indefatigable endeavours as well her vision. In 1980, Jill O’Brien successfully stood for the Kew City Council and served as Mayor in 1983 and 1984. With an eye to preserving the past as well as guarding the future, she had the Mayoral robes restored and in 1980 and 1981 was president of the Kew Historical Society. The preservation and restoration of Villa Alba in Walmer Street owes much to her determined efforts throughout the 1980s. On Council, she chaired a number of committees involved in the saving of the Kew River Parklands from the proposed transmission line of the SEC. The Pony Club was a dream of Diana Bassett-Smith, which came true, based on the British Horse Society Pony Club formed in 1929; a worldwide organisation. A meeting was called at ‘Lavender Park’, the home of Mrs Mary Grant and her brother George ‘Mel’ Balfour. Invited to the meeting were Baye Skues, Eric Rundle, Ben Taylor, the Barringtons, Smiths, Lou Lewis and Gwen Cascaden. They all supported Diana Bassett-Smith for forming a Pony Club. The first formal meeting was held at ‘Landscape’, which was the home of the Barringtons and the former home of artist Percy Leason. Negotiations with the Lands Department resulted in the club being granted use of the grounds in Eltham Lower Park for a peppercorn rent. Eltham was the 4th Pony Club in Victoria; the other three being Frankston, Templestowe and Western District. Together they formed the Pony Club Association of Victoria at Diana Bassett-Smith’s instigation. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community. The first railway union in the world was created in Melbourne in 1861 when twenty locomotive drivers banded together to form the Locomotive Engine Drivers Association of Victoria. The forerunner to the A.F.U.L.E., the Association continues today and is the oldest continuous railway union in the world.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. It was with a group of photos from 1988 to 1990 in a folio with paper labels (see items 01042 to 01049). The explanation of the source of the rosemary was in the same folio but the described photo is missing. It says the rosemary donated to Legacy each year for the sprigs of rosemary handed out to the public comes from nurseryman, Peter Hannah, who sourced a cutting from a bush in Frankston which was said to come from a cutting brought home by a wounded soldier.A record of widows preparing rosemary as gifts for the public and the story behind the source of the rosemary. Printed "ticket" for fund raising - The Australian Tramways & Motor Omnibus Employees' Association Victoria Most Popular Conductress competition - for Mrs. Winifred Gibson of Preston depot. Funds were in aid of the Red Cross Prisoner of War Fund. Has the name of H. Nott, Hon Secretary, Tram depot Malvern. Tickets were donated to the Red Cross fund by the Proprietors of Black and White Cigarettes. Has on the rear an advertisement for the cigarette company.
