By 1909, from 2,500,000 cubic yards worked, reported recovery was 17,284 ounces of gold and 224 tons of tin ore. By 1909, Cocks Pioneer’s power plant had become inadequate and uneconomical. The barge was floated downstream about a mile, but lost time caused the operations to cease. Following testing, a new mine was established by diverting Reid's Creek at a cost of £25 000. Settling dams were built, one of which held 1,935,900 cubic feet. Sold earth banks, built against a wall of stringy bark saplings constructed and laced with vertical props, were built. A cut glass and embossed sterling silver serving dish (known as an epergne) presented to Mrs. Mary Williams at a banquet held at Knuckey's California Gully Hotel in October 1889. The banquet was held to honour Mr. Richard Williams, who had been the Mine Manager of the Johnson's Reef Gold Mines for the past 24 years. Mrs. Mary Williams (nee Thomas) was born in St. Austell, Cornwall in 1830. She migrated to Australia with her husband in two children in 1857, arriving on the 21st December on the 'Shakespeare'. The family lived in California Gully. Richard Williams was a mine manager, firstly for George Lansell and then for thirty seven years at the Johnson's Reef Gold Mines. Mary received the epergne at a presentation banquet for her husband in October 1889. She received the accolade as 'she was a kind and charitable lady, a genuine wife and a good mother'. Bendigo, formerly known as Sandhurst, grew from Indigenous lands to a major gold rush boomtown and is now a vibrant regional city with rich cultural heritage. The Bendigo region is the traditional land of the Dja Dja Wurrung (Djaara) people, who have lived in the area for thousands of years. They managed the land sustainably, utilizing the rich hunting grounds and waterways, and their cultural stories and knowledge remain deeply woven into the landscape today. European exploration began with Major Thomas Mitchell in 1836, followed by squatters establishing sheep runs in 1837. The arrival of settlers led to the displacement of the Dja Dja Wurrung people, with waves of settlement from the south in 1837 and from the north in 1845. Gold was discovered on Bendigo Creek in 1851 by Mrs. Margaret Kennedy and Mrs. Julia Farrell, sparking one of Australia’s largest gold rushes. By 1852, around 20,000 people had arrived from across the world, including Europe and China, transforming Bendigo into a booming gold-mining economy. The city was officially named Sandhurst from 1853 to 1891. The wealth generated during this period is reflected in Bendigo’s Victorian architecture, including the Town Hall and historic buildings. Gold mining continued into the early 20th century, but by 1954, mining had largely ceased. The city then shifted focus to manufacturing and regional services, experiencing renewed growth from the 1930s onward. Modern Bendigo has become a fast-growing regional centre, aided by infrastructure like the Calder Freeway linking it to Melbourne. Today, Bendigo preserves its history through museums, walking tours, and heritage sites. Key attractions include the Bendigo Art Gallery, Bendigo Joss House Temple, Central Deborah Gold Mine, and the Goldfields Track, which highlight both the gold rush era and the city’s cultural diversity. Content includes: 'The level south at the 110 ft was driven over 35 years ago by the late Geo Phillips who had a 20 head mill on the lease and as far as I can remember its about 200 ft south and of course the reef iow well above a few feet in on account of it rising in that direction and thousands of tons has been taken out of that particular block and crushed.... the writer worked on that reef in his younger days and we connected with some old workings above us known as the German's Workings collapsed and closed up from the 100 ft level to the surface'. Eight page handwritten document with details of the Carlisle United Gold Mine at Long Gully. The lease was 76 acres, 660 yards on line of reef. The Kent shaft was the next mine north Havilah Road, Boldt Street's corner. 'The Carlisle United was formed by the amalgamation of ttte companies, the Old Carlisle, the North Garden and the Passby. These mines were situated on the west side of Bennett Street in about a length of a few hundred feet, with the Passby on the Casley Street corner. And the old Carlisle and North Garden only recently being unearthed beneath the Unity, 'Carlisle' sand heap.' Details about the mining plant, the main shaft, the winding engine air compressor, stone crusher, and engine house are given. The Kent shaft and steel poppet legs are described. The company's first power station, located at the eastern end of the valley began operating with its 340 Kilowatt steam-powered generator. By 1909, from 2,500,000 cubic yards worked, reported recovery was 17,284 ounces of gold and 224 tons of tin ore. By 1909, Cocks Pioneer’s power plant had become inadequate and uneconomical. The barge was floated downstream about a mile, but lost time caused the operations to cease. Following testing, a new mine was established by diverting Reid's Creek at a cost of £25 000. Settling dams were built, one of which held 1,935,900 cubic feet. Sold earth banks, built against a wall of stringy bark saplings constructed and laced with vertical props, were built. In 1914, the company was reformed as Cock’s Pioneer Gold and Tin Mines NL, another power station was constructed at the western end of the township, near the junction of Clear and Reid's Creeks. From 6,800,000 cubic yards of material processed, the returns were 64,397 ounces of gold and 855 ton of tin. Cocks Pioneer mine then moved the barge downs stream and continued sluicing. In 1929 Cocks Pioneer Electric Gold and Tin Mining Company ceased operations due to a drop in values.
