A Couta boat is a type of sailing boat originally designed and built in Victoria, Australia, around Sorrento, Queenscliff and along Victoria's west coast as far west as Portland. It was originally used as a traditional fishing boat from around 1870 until the 1930s, although it survived as a commercial fishing vessel until the 1950s. 1/10 size scale model of couta Boat Ariel. Built by Arthur Woodley Crib Point, April 2001- June 2002. Although later fitted with a motor, Ariel was one of the last couta boats designed principally for sailing, and still sails at Portland. The couta boat Pilota was hand built by Alf Fredrickson of Portland in 1900 for Les (Slippery) Eales of Port Fairy. The vessel was wrecked at Port Fairy in the 1980s with loss of two lives. David Williams, betweeen 1990 and 2004 self-published 18 historical sketchbooks around Victoria. These and other projects involved the creation of over 5000 paintings. David Williams is a water colourist. His book for South-eastern Victoria around the Portland area was awarded the Victorian Government History Award in 2005. Special exhibitions of David William's paintings have been held in Eaglehawk, Echuca, Bright, Glen Waverley, Myrtleford, Wandiligong, Olinda and Point Lonsdale to assist community projects.Image of a wharf with boats moored up either side.
