Adolphus Peter Elkin (1891-1979), professor of anthropology was president of the Association for the Protection of Native Races and vice-president of the N.S.W. Aborigines Welfare Board from 1940. Both Cashmore brothers embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT Palermo on 7th May 1915, and returned to Australia in mid-1919. Nine letters by Jack and two by Arthur were sent from Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine.
