The invention of a hand drill is credited to Arthur James Arnot and William Blanch Brain of Melbourne, Australia who patented the electric drill in 1889. In 1895, the first portable handheld drill was created by brothers Wilhem & Carl Fein of Stuttgart, Germany. Hand-powered devices have been used for millennia. However, during the last quarter of the 19th century a radically improved generation of tools appeared. These tools took advantage of modern mass production machinery and processes (like interchangeable parts) and an increased availability in superior material (metal instead of wood). One of the outcomes included an array of new drilling machines. Mr Scouller was the manager of the Orbost Butter Factory for 30 years and was succeeded by Mr Stafford after his retirement. The Orbost Butter and Produce Co. Ltd was registered on June 1st, 1892.The first shipment to England went rank and was only good for axle grease on wagons and carts.The milk was brought to the factory by horse and dray.Most people would take the whey home for their pigs,which were abundant on the farms in the Orbost district. First directors – James Nixon (chairman), James Cameron, Carl H. Grove, Harry Richardson, David Rhys Morris, Lachlan Ross. The factory opened 11th January, 1893 with John Scouller as the manager. The Orbost Butter and Produce Co. In 1797, German inventor August von Marquardt created the precursor to a blowtorch, consisting of a simple oil lamp (wick flame) with a tube to direct air into the flame. Swedish engineer Carl Richard Nyberg invented the modern blowtorch and secured a patent for it in 1881.Among other things his design introduced a pressurised, more efficient system. Blowtorches were widely used by plumbers, tinsmiths and mechanics for soldering, brazing, and heating metal parts. This blowtorch was made by the Swedish company Primus (B.A. Hjorth & Co.), which built on the original design on Nyberg and was one of the earliest and leading manufacturers of portable fuel appliances. The letter “S” stamped on the tank base indicates that this particular blowtorch was likely manufactured around 1930.The cylindrical tank is made of brass and has a metal handle, stamped with “Primus No 632”. A narrow burner tube rises to a nozzle, with a small hook near its base. It includes moving parts such as a hand pump, control valve, and filler cap for operation. The Orbost Bowling Club was founded in 1929, by a group of farmers and businessmen. They set about providing a sporting icon for the town. Six rinks were constructed on the current site using horse drawn scoops and drags. The "Back to Orbost” 1937 book, describes the greens as "a bit rough for the first two seasons but now compare favourably with most country greens". Albert Richardson was a past President of the Bendigo Historical Society. He had a great interest in the history of the Bendigo goldfield. A reserve in Marong Road, adjoining Victoria Hill mine precint, is named in honour of Albert and his contribution to recording the mining history of Bendigo. In this document, Albert has listed some early mines on the New Chum reefline. The Garibaldi Gold Mining Company, near the corner of Rose and Mackenzie Streets, Bendigo, was listed in the Victorian Government Gazettes on October 26th, 1860. Gazette 136 Page 2035. All the shareholders gave their place of residence as either Swanston or Collins Street, Melbourne. Bonati's Gold Mining Company was gazetted on 13th January, 1871 Gazette 2 Page 55. Carl Mueller was the Manager of the Company, which was situated on the 'New Chum Reef, Bendigo'. Fourteen page photocopy of information, written by Albert Richardson, regarding goldmines along the New Chum line of reef. Emma was born in East Doncaster in 1903, the daughter of Carl Heinrich Uebergang and Sarah Buck. Emma’s grandparents were pioneers in Doncaster from 1855 and her father had an orchard in Andersons Creek Road, which was sold in 1961. Mr & Mrs Atkinson had a green-grocery business and general store at 815 Whitehorse Road, almost on the corner of Elgar Road from 1930 until about 1950. (See file for further details). In retirement the couple lived at 63 Zetland Road, Mont Albert and William continued to work as an orchard hand. Emma died in 2000 and is buried in Templestowe Cemetery. In this photo Mrs Atkinson is in the uniform of St. Johns Ambulance. In 1963 she was awarded a ‘Medal of Honour for Efficient Service’ by the Governor Sir Rowan Delacombe. This document examines the controversial legacy of Dr. James Patrick Murray, focusing on his involvement in maritime violence and his surprising recognition by the Bendigo Council. Bendigo Council awarded Dr. Murray a bonus and a glowing reference 150 years ago, despite his alleged involvement in mass murder at sea. He received a £50 bonus (over $10,000 today) for his work during a public health crisis. Murray captained the brig Carl, which was involved in forcibly transporting islanders to work on Fiji's cotton plantations. Accounts describe extreme violence: when enslaved islanders resisted, Murray and his crew fired into the hold, drilled holes to shoot more easily, and disposed of bodies at sea—allegedly killing 70 people. Survivors were delivered to Fiji, and the crew received a large finder's fee. Murray was described as charming and confident, but also as cruel, treacherous, and deceitful by contemporary sources. He betrayed his own crew by testifying against them in exchange for immunity from prosecution. Some accounts of Murray's actions may be exaggerated or self-serving, as witnesses were also implicated in the crimes and may have sought to minimize their own roles. Murray was Irish-born, educated at Trinity College Dublin, and established as a Melbourne doctor before turning to risky ventures in the South Seas, drawn by the promise of wealth and adventure. The South Pacific at the time attracted many fugitives and outcasts seeking fortune or escape from the law. Despite his violent past, Murray returned to Victoria and maintained a respectable public image, with few aware of his connection to the notorious events in Fiji. In 1872, Bendigo faced a deadly smallpox outbreak.Dr. Murray was appointed with full authority to manage the crisis and was credited with successfully containing the outbreak, earning public gratitude and official praise. Shortly after his public health success, Murray was implicated in the slave trading of South Sea islanders, specifically through his involvement with the ship Carl. Court testimony revealed brutal methods used to capture islanders, including trickery and force. The scandal shocked the public, with widespread condemnation and questions about how Murray had been appointed to a position of trust. Victorian authorities and the press criticized Murray and those who had supported or employed him. Despite the revelations, the Bendigo council felt obligated to honor their promise of a bonus for his work during the outbreak, citing the importance of keeping their word. Murray did not return to Bendigo after the scandal broke, though he sent letters expressing gratitude and claiming to have reformed. His claims of redemption were met with skepticism and derision by the press. The ship Carl was seized, and several crew members were convicted and sentenced for their roles in the slave trading operation. Another copy of this photo exists that is labelled as Board of Management 1949 - which is incorrect. Legatee Eric Harding OBE, MM, was also a member of the Limbless Soldiers' Association of Victoria as he lost a leg as a gunner in France in WW1. He served with the Australian Field Artillery in the original Anzac Corps. Despite loosing a leg he was active enough to ride with a Light Horse Party at the head of Melbourne's 1975 Anzac Day march. This pyjama case was produced in the 1930s by Joy-Toys, an Australian toy company founded in South Yarra in the early 1920s. It was gifted to Elaine Morris (then Nobelius - the granddaughter of Carl Axel Nobelius) at an early - perhaps 3rd - birthday. Elaine was born in 1934, so it would have been gifted around 1937. Several other Joy-Toys monkeys were made with hands and feet, which might either have fallen off or been removed over the past century or which may not have been included on this model. Some other models of Joy-Toys monkeys were based on the characters of British illustrator Lawson Wood, who used a wide cast of monkeys and other animals in his work. The zipper was made in Australia by Lightning, indicating that the monkey's components were also likely made locally.This pyjama case belonged to a member of the Nobelius family, and reflects a style of toymaking that today is far out of fashion from a distinctive company that is no longer in business.The monkey has a hollow body, with the interior lined with orange satin fabric and closed by a zipper. The shape of the monkey is filled out by the case's intended purpose - storing pyjamas. The head is stuffed, and features a face made of felt molded over buckram, with painted features in red (mouth and nostrils) and black (closed eyelids and eyelashes). Outside of the face, the monkey is covered in synthetic brown 'fur'. It is possible that the monkey once had hands and feet which have since been removed or lost. The monkey's limbs and tails are also stuffed and separated from the hollow body. The head and arms of the monkey are on joints allowing them to rotate 360 degrees. The monkey also has small furless fabric ears. The Ruyton Reporter (formerly known as Ruyton Reports) captures the essential Ruyton Girls' School experience for the broader school community. Dr Janice Newton has had a long term interest in Indigenous Studies and Aboriginality, and has published papers linking Aboriginality to the counterculture and to artists and musicians. Vellum Certificate of Admittance to the Free Masonry of the United Grand Lodge for Carl Mueller, dated 30 March 1871. At the top of the certificate is crest with a lion wearing a crown on the left and a unicorn with a chain on the right of a circle divided into quarters, two of the quarters have three lions in them, the third has one lion standing on one leg, and the fourth has a human like figure with wings. Above the circle is a crown with a lion standing on it and an elephant on each side. Around the edge of the circle is ' Honi Soi -- Mal Y - - E (parts are obscured by the animals legs and a helmet between the circle and the crown. Underneath is printed ' Dieu Et Mon Droit'. Under the main headings are three columns spaced across the page with, on the left, the details of the admittance and on the right are the details in Latin. In the left margin is the Mason Seal. Between the columns are various tools? boxes and two spheres.
