Robert Lowman, Christmas Hills, 1882 Lowman built his Lowman's Hotel or Lowman's Folly on Osborne Road - Yarra Glen Road, Christmas Hills in the 1870s when the main road from Christmas Hills to Yarra Glen (then "Yarra Flats") used to follow the present Eltham -Yarra Glen Road to Osborne Road, then followed that to Mt Wise Road and down the escarpment. Years later a new road was opened leaving Lowmna's Hotel high and dry to gain renown as "Lowman's Folly". It closed in the early 1890s. Elizabeth Jane Edwards was born in Geelong in 1851 to Eliza, nee Murphy and Frederick Edwards. It is said that she was one of the first children registered in Melbourne. She married George Gray in 1864. They lived at Cleir Hills, Queenstown where George was a pioneer fruitgrower in the area. They had six daughters and two sons. This leather folder is part of a collection of books, photos and memorabilia donated from the Chatham-Holmes family collection. The item belonged to Elizabeth Chatham who was the first Ladies President elected to the general committee in 1993...1)Tooled leather folder with Elizabeth Chatham stamped into the front along with a leaf pattern and Ballarat Golf Club Member tooled into the back surrounded by a laurel wreath and Ballarat's Avenue of Honour's Arch of Victory tooled into the centre. The edge is laced with leather thonging in a blanket stitch. Consists of five sheets with notes about the proposed horse tram system for Melbourne, prepared by Jack Cranston. Includes extract and notes on the parliamentary enquiry and the possibility of a cable tram system. The coloured sheet is from another copy held at the former VicTrack Malvern Museum. Images from the latter set of documents - Sept 2024. 35 Sheets of details on the plans and sections of proposed horse tram lines throughout Melbourne. Produced as part of the work undertaken by Jack Cranston for the Department of Transport / Heritage Victoria - see Reg Item 584. On rear cover ink and on page 2 of the folder is a note on the source of the document. Content of folder include: 1- Transcribed (German to English) copies of letters written by Ludwig to his daughter Marga and others, whilst interned in UK and Australia. Original letter are in the hands of Ludwig's son. Each sheet or run details where the driver/conductor would sign on, time, the trips, meal breaks, finish time. Shows the tram operations with many short workings with some very detailed instructions, including running specials to schools.Demonstrates aspects of the Ballarat Tramways at the end of the operations prior to closure. Gives details of working hours, rosters for the week for crews. Shows the additional trams to the basic service on Weekdays and special instructions for picking up school children etc.Set of Table or Run sheets for the Ballarat Tramways. Folder, Sir William Irvine
Sir William Irvine, (1858-1943) Eltham, Politician and Judge. "William Irvine was born at Dromalene, Newry, Down, Ireland and after the death of his father emigrated to Melbourne with his mother in 1879. Here be completed his legal studies and spent some years teaching and in legal practice before entering the Victorian Parliament in 1894. He rose to the position of Leader of the Opposition and in 1902 became Premier. He resigned in 1904 for health reasons but in 1906 entered Federal politics as the member for Flinders. He was knighted in 1913 and in 1918 resigned to take up the position of Chief Justice of Victoria. From 1919 he administered the state as lieutenant-governor several times and was acting governor for nearly three years from 1931. He died in 1943 and following a State funeral was buried at Eltham cemetery. A portrait by Buckmaster won the Archibald Prize in 1933" - Newsletter 163 Folder of information.sir william irvine -
