Object. Finely tapered wooden cane- .7 cm diameter at base and .9 cm at base of metal handle. The rounded top, forming a handle is metal and while some numbers are visible,I do not think that there is a hallmark to indicate silver No 935 and some indistinguishable letters. The metal extends around the handle and 10.5 cm down the cane. A 2.5 cm wide ''bracelet'' of a different metal encircles the cane, over the top of the darker metal. The cane has a covering of black paint, which is showing wear and tear. The cane has a 2.7 cm metal tip-possibly brass. Ladies grey blazer worn by Heather Pain as Pipe Major of the Ladies Pipe Band Bendigo. Grey woollen single breasted blazer. Grey satin lining across shoulders at back. Long sleeves lined with yellow and black striped cotton fabric. Body of blazer unlined. Three pockets on front-one on either side at hip level. One LHS breast pocket with red embroidery shield containing thistles, leaves and crossed swords. The pocket has a 1cm tartan bans across the top. Hip level pockets and lower sleeves have 1.5cm bands of red corded ribbon. Front opening is fastened with two X 2cm grey plastic buttons. The enema box was used by midwife Mary Howlett in the 1880s on her district rounds. It was used to hold Ingram's Patent No. 1474 Seamless Enema Syringe, but the syringe is missing.Mary Howlett (1840-1922) began practising as a country midwife in 1866 in the western district of Victoria. She qualified as a 'ladies monthly nurse' in 1887 and continued to practise as a nurse and midwife until 1920.She began her six months training at the Melbourne Lying-In Hospital. She was known by many as 'Auntie', and her career spanned more than 50 years. Mrs Howlett's midwifery box and contents were given to Dr Frank Forster, and he donated them to the museum collection in 1993.Oval shaped black leather case with gold clip. These are parts of a vaginal douch apparatus set. The apparatus appears to be a T More-Madden model, as used at the Rotunda Hospital, Ireland.Mary Howlett (1840-1922) began practising as a country midwife in 1866 in the western district of Victoria. She qualified as a 'ladies monthly nurse' in 1887 and continued to practise as a nurse and midwife until 1920.She began her six months training at the Melbourne Lying-In Hospital. Newspaper clipping, Two old Victorian ladies are saved from cracking up
This newspaper clipping was collected by a member of the Bay Steamers Maritime Museum as a record of the long process to preserve and restore the steam tug Wattle. This article appeared in the newspaper ________ in 1980 to report that there were two historic vessels with a Victorian connection that were going to be saved from destruction by not-for-profit organisations. ST Wattle was to be saved by the Victorian Steamship Association and Alma Doepel by Sail and Adventure Limited and the Alma Supporters Club. This newspaper clipping is an important historic document as it records one of many instances of not-for-profit volutneer operated organisations saving important historic vessels as there are no alternatives in the government or private sector. The article records the first stages of a very long restoration period. In 2012 the Wattle and Alma Doepel continue to be in the process of restoration 30 years after this initital report. Admittedly, Wattle had many years of operation between 1980 and 2007 but this article does show how time consuming it is to preserve historic vessels and how important it is for volunteers to complete these restoration projects as there are limited options otherwise from the government or private sector.Black and white newspaper clipping outlining the recent plans to save the two historic vessels Steam Tug Wattle and sailing ship Alma Doepel.
