Letter, Holmbush
Architects Carleton & Carleton applied to the City of Kew for any objections to the Melbourne Legacy Club establishing a Hostel for children of deceased Service men on Burke Road, yellow copy of the letter is dated 16 Dec 1942 and signed C.R.Carleton (also a legatee). The reply from the City of Kew is that there were no objections and was dated 19th December 1942. Holmbush was the first hostel for children that Legacy started and operated from April 1943. It was later renamed Blamey House after another hostel called Blamey House was closed. Melbourne Legacy ran three residences: Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950), to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. Was deposited in the archive cabinets in a file with documents pertaining to the residences, along with many other items and photos prior to the start of the cataloguing.A record of the investigations into regulations prior to the purchase of land on Burke Road for the first hostel to be established by Melbourne Legacy.00336.1 Yellow quarto paper, black type 00336.2 Quarto paper with City of Kew letterhead, black type.00336.1 Signed C.R. A letter from Claude Blatchford to Legatee Stan Savige about the writing of the book about the history of Melbourne Legacy. It discusses the cost of printing and holds up that might mean the book was not published. He says: "Naturally I should be greatly disappointed if it fails to see the light of day. It cost me a great deal of effort at a time when effort with me was not easy, and, quite frankly, I should never have attempted it if I thought for a moment that my hard work would not result in the book being printed."A record of a past staff member praising Savige and the legatees.White paper letter on Junior Legacy Club letterhead from Blatchford to Stan Saviage about his biography.Handwritten in blue pen 'Blatchford 1932' and signed in black ink 'Yours Blatch', and noted in red pen 'Claude Blatchford (Editor of the History)'.claude blatchford, history -

Document, President's Fund, 1935
The President's Fund was created in 1932 by a donation from Legatee Walter W Berry from his late father's estate "to help temporarily embarrassed Melbourne Legatees" towards the end of The Great Depression. The aim of the fund was the give the President a way to help needy cases with discretion and without having to gain approval from committees. In many cases the money was repaid by the recipient. The letter dated 16 March 1935 was to the trustees of the Howard and Georgina Benevolent Fund outlines the way the fund was to be used at the President's discretion within the guidelines provided by Legatee Berry. That included members of Melbourne Legacy Club or Junior Legatees, or any returned soldier that couldn't obtain help anywhere else. From the pencil note it was never sent. This document was in a folder labelled President's Fund Origin and Authorisation with many other documents that included correspondence, receipts of donations and material about when money was given to help appropriate cases. The folder was marked with H40 which is part of an early archive project from the late 1960s and early 1970s.The President's Fund was a significant help to legatees and junior legatees who were unable to obtain help from other sources.White Legacy letterhead with black type, a letter from President Hall to The Trustees of the Howard and Georgina Berry Fund.
