This bookmark may have belonged to, and was possibly made by, Miss Mary Leviny, the eldest of the Leviny sisters, who was a founding member of the Castlemaine Red Cross. This bookmark was found in the book 'Half Mile Down' by William Blake (Reg. No. 1081).A rare, intact memento of Australia Day in the form of a gum leaf made into bookmark. It was possibly sold as a fundraiser for the newly formed Red Cross in Castlemaine to aid the war efforts abroad during World War One.Hand-paInted bookmark made from a gum (eucalyptus) leaf. The D26 is an authentic outrigger logging barge - one of four that were towed by P.S. Adelaide for 80 years of its working life. In March 1987 Council purchased the barge from Deakin Shire in South Australia for $15,000. However, its restoration was put on hold until the crew had completed work on the P.S. Enterprise, eventually beginning in 1988 using local red gum. The barge was relaunched at Echuca East on Australia Day, 1990. The D26 remains at the Port of Echuca and on special occasions can be seen being towed by the P.S. Adelaide for demonstrations. The restored D26 outrigger barge is an example of early 20th century boat building technology developed for transporting reg gum logs downstream along the Murray River, often from the Barmah Forest to the Murray River Sawmills at Echuca. It shows the resourcefulness and manual transport techniques for a timber that does not float and had to be chained to the outrigging logs laying perpendicular to the hull. These outrigger barges could be let go to float with the current downstream with a bargeman onboard. Often there was no tiller or helm, but a chain was tied to the ballast at the back to keep the barge in the centre of the river channel. This allowed the Murray River Sawmills built 4 barges to go behind the PS Adelaide, the A11, the B22, the C24 and the D26. Photograph shows a group of five cable tramway employees with a cart containing batteries to supply power for lights in Melbourne Cable trams. This lighting was introduced by the Tramway Board (TB), the forerunner to the MMTB during 1917. A motor generator at each car house or depot provided the power to charge the batteries which were then placed in each tram for the day. Reference - The Commonwealth Engineer 1/8/1917 - Reg Item 2568. The equipment was provided by the General Electric Company. The cart has the letters "TB CH" possibly indicating Clifton Hill Depot and the batteries are lettered "NE" and then given a number. Photo date unknown - 1917 to 1940. The original line to the Essendon Aerodrome was constructed in 1943 to serve the airport and aircraft construction. It was funded by the Commonwealth Government. By 1976, patronage to the airport terminus in Vaughan St had dropped, the crossing of the highway to the Tullamarine Airport opened in 1970, was dangerous, and the highway needed to be widened. The new terminus was a short distance to the north between Mathews Ave and the Highway. This series of photographs show the last day of operations to the original terminus and the changeover, which was done in about 7 hours. No buses were required. It was done by workers of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board. The line was later extended to Airport West. .1 - W5 789, (Essendon Airport Route 59) about to turn from Mathews Ave into Vaughan St. Has new track and footbridge in the foreground. .2 - W5 791 on the siding or spur at the airport terminus, the last tram to use this facility. .3 - W2 571, at the Airport terminus alongside Vaughan St on the last morning of the use of this terminus. Note the new copper trolley wire is up for the new track but has been pulled to the west side using rope. .7 - W5 805, turning from Mathews Ave into Vaughan St, to the old Essendon Airport terminus. Has a new track in the foreground, and the overhead for the curves is still in position. .8 - W6 991 turning from Vaughan St into Matthews Ave, at 855am, the last tram from the old terminus. Envelope for collecting expired or about to be expired Scholars' Concession Tickets from students. Listed the number of tickets collected, the number sections the ticket was valid for, Conductor, Outfit Number and Date. It would appear that in the 1950's and perhaps earlier, that conductors had to collect if possible the concession passes from school children on the last day of term. In the collection (Reg Item 937), is a Scholar's Concession Ticket for the First term of 1956, which expired on 11-5-1956. Newspaper Clipping - from December 9, 1929 of the first passenger tram in Collins St, Sunday 9 December. 1929. shows a tram travelling in the street at the east end (tree lined) and a photograph of 541 and officials at Spencer St. terminus. Memento - set of three items that were given out at the "Box Hill - Doncaster Electric Tramway - Centenary Exhibition" 19-28 October 1989. .1 - Two pasteboard printed tickets for a day return and the exhibition - Nos. 7297 and 7298 .2 - Pamphlet promoting the Robert Green book, "The first electric road" with a order form. .3 - Paper bag stamped with the image of the tramway cross bench car. Block of tickets - paper printed paper stapled too a cardboard back with a top retaining piece, "Railway Check Tickets" printed in black on off white paper with two red diagonal stripes, numbers B879814 to 879999. Used for passengers who travelled by tram or bus on railway issued tickets. Has the terms of use printed on the tickets, only available on Sundays. Issued by the MMTB. The only line that these were used on was Route 19, for the Upfield line. Hand written table card for Malvern depot written on a pre printed cardboard sheet giving details for runs 163T and 39 (Labour Day). Gives sign on times, car out, trip details and which "run" takes the tram from the crew. 1384.1 - Ticket, printed on gold card using brown ink titled "Souvenir Ticket Closure of Hawthorn Depot" for the Tramway Museum Society of Victoria's 5th tour to mark the closure as a running shed on 13/14 Feb. 1965. Notes the Official Opening day of 6/4/1916. Tour used tram SW6 850. See Reg Item 1384 for another sample of this ticket and another Hawthorn depot associated tour ticket. 1384.2 - Ticket printed on dark gold card using brown ink titled "Souvenir ticket to mark the 50th year of the opening of the Hawthorn Tramway Trust", gives dates of the opening, MMTB Takeover and closure. Report and photographs of various mechanisms to identify and check clearances for Safety Zones on tramways. .1 - Report - 4 pages stapled in top left hand corner - titled "Interim Report - Nicholson Street Safety Bars", dated 20/6/1978 signed by R. G. Vanselow. Describes the work involved in providing a type of "jiggle bars" leading up to the safety zone. Many photographs of the various types of safety zone marks were included within the folder. The photos of 912 are related to the clearance testing carried out during 1973 for the Z class. Black and white photographs of the Electrical Control room supervisory panel, that was located in Bouverie St and Queensberry St Carlton known as Carlton Control. Photograph most likely taken at the same time as the new panel was implemented - see Reg item 4514 - late 1964.
