Document, City of Port Phillip, Naming Proposal Port Melbourne, Mar 2002
Proposal for "Fussy"s Beach"in honour of Peter Fussell, formerly South Melbourne engineer, soundly rejected. 1. Although Peter was involved in designs for this area of foreshore as an engineer for COPP, he was unknown in Port 2. Not customary to name beaches after people 3. "Fussy" was only certain officer's nickname for Peter and was also seen to lack dignityPublic notice placed in Emerald Hill Times, March 2002, proposing "Sandridge Beach" be renamed "Fussy's Beach"in honour of former city engineer peter Fussell, who was ill.town planning - proposals shelved, garden city, peter fussel - city engineer -

Sign - Information board, Fix Bayonets!
A poster information board, white text on black, for cartoon in 5RAR display. On the 4th May 1966, the majority of 5RAR C Company (1st tour) arrived at Vung Tau South Vietnam on board the converted aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney, The following day they were ferried ashore on American landing crafts. As they approached the beach, they heard an order that has remained with them until this day. "Fix Bayonets!" Had Vung Tau been over-run by Viet Cong? Should we put a round up the spout? Then again, did we even have a round to put up the spout? Q-Sgt Bob Trenear heard the order with dismay and stated "Fix Bayonets, bloody hell I packed mine in the bottom of my pack!" This was supposed to be a secured area. The Americans (who were working on the beach) thought it a great joke with comments such as "Put those pig stickers away before you hurt yourselves". Unfortunately, this isn't the original cartoon. However Richard Martin created a new one in 2012 and donated it to the Company's Mushroom Club. The original cartoon was published in an Australian newspaper in 1966. As this is a part of the Company's history it would be great appreciated if anyone having information or an image of the original cartoon to contact the 5RAR Association through their Website www.5rar.asn.au 5 rar association, cartoon, poster, information board, vung tau, hmas sydney, sgt bob trenear, bayonet, richard martin -

The Portland Pier was extended in 1916: "The contractors for the extension or the deep-water pier continue to make steady progress, and the work is nearing completion. Only a small gap on the south end remains to be filled with piling. The beams and decking have been laid down over the whole of the rest of the pier, and the effect im presses one with the magnitude, stability and excellence of the work." Erection of new butts by the members of the St Kilda Volunteer Army Corps in 1874, after the government took possession of the land that the Volunteer Army Corps had been using. The butts were banks constructed of sand and earth, kept together with saplings, to create areas for shooting practice. They were constructed on the beach at Hobson's Bay, half a mile from the St Kilda jetty. An article about this appeared in the Illustrated Australian News for Home Readers on 25 February 1874, available on the National Library of Australia Trove site https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/63105925. Colour photograph, Fiery Creek, Lake Bolac, 1997-2010 drought
Lake Bolac's eastern lake-bed and beach during the 19987-2010 drought, looking south. The lake bank exposed in this photograph is an aboriginal midden about a likometer across excavated by Dr Peter Coutts in the 1970's. Radio carbon dates of charcoal from the base levels date the midden at 12,000 years old, making this one of two middens with this very early date, the other being on the coast near Warrnambool. lake bolac, aboriginal midden, dr peter coutts -

Discusses what does it feel like to be an Australian in 1959? A critique on our advanced national adolescence, limitations of our artist's creativity. We are not English or America - how do we compare? Australians want to be told they are better, the country anxious to hear well of itself. "Dear Trish, We are on our third day at Durras and having a wonderfully healthy holiday going for long beach walks and getting quite exhausted. Yesterday the more hardy of us (Ben, Amy & me) even swam. Just prior to our swim four dolphins had been frolicking in the bay where we were picnicking. Ben, Amy and Rupert are anxious to do some fishing so we are off to buy some bait and post this card in Batemans Bay some 20km south. Happy Mother's Day for Sunday. Love from us all, Penleigh." Photograph (copy), Early Torquay Beach Scenes, Circa 2001-2
Photograph shows a tree carving on the esplanade adjacent to the Torquay front beach based on the figurehead of the barque Inverlochy, a Scottish trading ship wrecked off nearby Anglesea on 8 December 1902. The original figurehead had been saved and mounted on a flagpole at Torquay but it disappeared in the 1950s. In 2001-02 local sculptor Mark Trinham carved a replica image of the figurehead into a 80 year old dead cypress tree on the site of the original flagpole. The Inverlochy was one of many ships that ended their seafaring days on the south coast of Victoria.Black and white photographtorquay victoria, wreck of the inverlochy, wood carving -

Currency - Various memorial coins
Our Legends 25 cent coin: OBVERSE Portrait of the Queen Elizabeth II in the field of the coin. Lettering: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 2016 IRB. REVERSE Depiction of a Victoria Cross Medal. 50th anniversary of the end of the Korean war coin: The coin design background of vertical lines replicates the stainless steel poles which are a major feature of the design of the Australian National Korean War Memorial in Canberra. The 'Dove of Peace' is shown between the floral emblems of South Korea and Australia. 1915 Gallipoli Coin: The Royal Australian Mint released the 2005 One Dollar Coin commemorating the 90th anniversary of the ANZAC landing on Gallipoli. The design of the coin has a silhouette image of an Australian bugler. This design is very plain and simple, but it portrays its message - ‘Lest We Forget. The image captures the ‘sounds of the last post being played as the sun sets over the beaches of Gallipoli. Whilst commemorating the 90th anniversary of Gallipoli, the image of the bugler is the highly relevant in relation to all conflicts in which Australia has fought. Centenary of the Australian Army coin: This coin is being minted in memory of those who have given their lives in the past and those who still serve for our country today. The $1 coin displays the Army crest, also referred to as the "rising sun" crest. -
