He embarked for Egypt on 28.1.1916 then for France on 29.3.1916. Appointed Acting Corporal on 3.8.1916. In hospital on 4.11.1916 with Trench feet, re-joined unit on 12.3.1917. Appointed Corporal 19.7.1917. Wounded in action 5.10.1917, GSW to the head. Re-joined unit 21.11.1917. Appointed Lance Sergeant 10.8.1918 then Sergeant soon after, Returned to Australia 1.9.1919 and discharged from the Army on 25.10.1919. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. In 1977 8/13 VMR Regiment was reduced to an independent squadron A Squadron 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles and in 1991 was linked with 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse forming the VMR Squadron of that regiment. Anzac Day parades were a regular part of regimental life. The photograph was taken to welcome home the Sunbury men who had fought in overseas battles during World War 1.Those who were not wearing their uniforms had been discharged as a result of injuries but they were eligible to be included in the Welcome Home functions that took place after 1918.Many men from Sunbury enlisted in the defence forces during World War 1. George Harrie (or Henry) Charles Trengrove was born in Ballarat in 1862. He became a teacher and was Head Teacher at Happy Valley school between 1900 and 1909. During this time he was Drum Major for the Linton Brass Band. The photograph shows him in military uniform but it is not known which of the colonial military units he served in. Book presented to the Museum from Tatura RSL showing the work that went into creating the Tatura Water Tower Mural. The Water tower on the north side, depict a full size picture of Sir John Monash in uniform. The south side of the tower depicts a thread of poppies. The two men, Spiros Raftopoulos and Ioannis Metaxas, joined the army to fight in the Balkan Wars which involved two conflicts that took place in the Balkan Peninsula between 1912 and 1913. In the first conflict Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia defeated the Ottoman Empire in the First Balkan War; in the second conflict Bulgaria unsuccessfully contested the distribution by its former allies of territory taken from the Turks during the First Balkan War. A number of Greeks who had emigrated to Australia and other parts of the world returned to Greece to fight in those wars.The men returning to fight for the country of their birth were motivated by their patriotism. Even though they had sought a new life in another country they felt strongly the need to return to their homeland to join the struggle.
