This is a photo of one of the first upright machine grape harvesters operating in the Rutherglen area. It was operating in the B Seppelt & sons Distillery Road vineyards on the edge of the Murray River in Wahgunyah. Rick Morris established Markwood Estate in 1971 with a philosophy for making wine of very high quality using chemical-free, traditional methods, both in the vineyard and also in the winery. The vineyard is deliberately not irrigated in order to induce more intense flavour into the fruit. Newspaper clipping from a newspaper (possibly Melbourne Sun) of 17/9/1970, reporting on the a head - on collision or accident between tram and a semi trailer in Ballarat the previous night. At the 1978 Festival of Kew, a number of organisations, including the City of Kew, the Kew Historical Society, Trinity Boys Grammar School and local Girl Guides participated in a re-enactment of the expedition of the party of Charles Grimes in surveying the Yarra River as far as Kew in February 1803. The location for the event was Yarra Bend Park near the Studley Park Boat House. The event was organised by the Kew Historical Society. The re-enactment was captured by a number of amateur photographers as well as by a photographer from the local Progress Press.Local communities select events to commemorate according to their shared history and values. Commemorations of colonial exploration were popular with local historical groups such as the Kew Historical Society in the twentieth century. In re-enacting events such as the Grimes survey of the Yarra, students from a local school were encouraged to take on specific roles, including play-acting individuals involved in the survey party as well as members of the local Wurundjeri People. The photographs, taken by amateur and professional photographers, represent a period in time when the dominant values were those shared by the descendants of European settlers in Victoria. Purchased from an antique shop in Willunga, South Australia by Dr Malcolm Barnett, who then donated it to the collection.Glass feeding bottle. Bulbous glass bottle with openings at either end. The upper surface is rounded, and the bottom surface is angled to allow the bottle to sit on a flat surface. The upper end has a wider neck suitable for a rubber teat, whilst the lower end is narrower and may have had a valve attachment. Graduated measurement markings for tablespoons and ounces run along each side of the bottle. Brought to Australia by Dutch migrants in the 1950s. Used for slow cooking of dishes such as soups and stews.Cream enamel with green upper rim. Three-legged. Consists of two circular compartments, the lower one of which is the kerosene tank. Adjustable wick in holder attached to a handle with which the wick can be raised and lowered. Spare wick in tank. Upper compartment has small brass porthole with glass centre through which to monitor flame. Inside bottom of upper compartment there is a longitudinal slit within an oval raised section. Carl Rudolph Braun (1823-1891) was the inventor of this instrument, as well as a type of decapitation hook. Braun was born and practiced in Austria, and followed Semmelweis as assistant to Klein at the Vienna Maternity Clinic in 1847, before becoming its head in 1856. Braud added a gynaecology section to the clinic in 1858, being convinced that obstetrics and gynaecology should be together. (Source: Baskett, Thomas. 'On the Shoulders of Giants: Eponyms and Names in Obstetrics and Gynaecology'). This device was included with a range of other obstetric instruments, mostly destructive instruments, given to RANZCOG from Box Hill Hospital labour ward in February- March 1998. The maternity service at Box Hill Hospital combined with St George's hospital in Kew to be known as Birralee Maternity Service. These instruments were collected by Julie Collette, Unit Manager, St George's Kew and given to RANZCOG Museum Curator, Susan Barnett.Craniotomy forceps, Braun's. Stainless steel forceps, with wingnut. Upper blade has open oval section and ridged grip section on the handle. Lower blade has serrated inner edge and ridged grip section on the handle. Ludmilla Meilerts, Oil On Board, Botanical Gardens, Circa 1970 Ludmilla Meilerts (1908 - 1997), Botanical Gardens, Melbourne, an impressive work painted with bold brushstrokes and a vivid colourful palette which typifies the artists work. ​ Born in Riga,Latvia in 1908 - After displaying an early talent for art she studied at The Latvian Academy Of Fine Arts graduating in 1940. Later that year she married Otto Meilerts, an Economist, and they moved to Stuttgart, Germany to avoid living under Soviet occupation and then emigrated to Australia in 1948 settling in Melbourne. She worked as a nurse's aid and in a clothing factory to fund the further development of her artistic career achieving considerable early success with her colourful work encompassing portraiture, florals and city and landscapes. She particularly like painting dockland scenes. She was a member of The Victorian Artists Society (VAS) and The Melbourne Society Of Woman Painters And Sculptors. ​ Major prizes include The Dunlop Prize in 1952, Gosford Art prize 1971, Camberwell 1973, VAS Purstitz Gold Medal 1982. She is represented in The State Galleries of Victoria, NSW, Tasmania and Western Australia as well as several regional Galleries.​ ​Still life of fruit and a jog. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand.
