Article, Vale Legatee Raymond Morgan Hall / Vale Legatee William Joseph Newing, 1970
A page from a Weekly Bulletin in 1970 farewelling two Legatees. It was in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy. So their service may have been particularly important. The folder appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. The documents from this folder have been added in seperate records (see 01262 to 01282). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1950s.These obituaries were kept with historical documents though the reason is unclear. The documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1950s. Legatee Cyril Smith and others were detailing their experiences and knowledge for the future.Foolscap page from the Weekly Bulletin in 1970 to farewell two well known Legateeshistory, obituary -

Document, About In Flanders Fields and the man who wrote it
A memo from Legatee Frank Doolan about the poem In Flanders Field and the discussion about the correct wording. There was some discussion about whether it was 'poppies blow' or 'poppies grow'. The article was from 'The Star Weekly' of Toronto about the John McCrae poem. The poem is significant for legacy as the final verse mentions the torch that is used in the Legacy logo. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees. The items have been catalogued separately.Details about the poem that inspires the torch symbol of Legacy. Document, The "Junior Legacy, Melbourne" Special Appeal 1956, 1956
This letter to Legatees was issued with the Weekly Bulletin on 28 August 1956, this was just before the first ever appeal to the public for donations. The letter outlines the purpose of the Appeal and how it will be launched by the Governor Sir Dallas Brookes and the timeline. Also that it had support from four leading newspapers and radio stations. It mentions a brochure "the Legacy Boy" and a brochure depicting the new building that will be mailed to Companies that Legatees had contacted (see 01264). The newsletter appears to be a normal example of the Weekly Bulletin. This was in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy. Appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The call for public donations was partially due to the purchase of the Dureau building and the need to modify the building for Legacy's needs. The documents from this folder have been added in seperate records (see 01262 to 01282). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1950s.The documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1950s. Legatee Cyril Smith and others were detailing their experiences and knowledge for the future. A caricature drawing labelled 'Melbourne Good Samaritans - The Legacy Club', of the early Legatees with their names, roles and some characteristics. Article, Bulletin VALE Legatee Cyril Terence Charles Kirby
An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin on the death of Legatee Cyril Terence Charles Kirby, a long serving Legatee. The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. The article includes an overview of his war service with the British as an 'Old Contemptible' in World War 1. Also with the Docks and Movement Control in Melbourne during World War 2. He met his wife Priscilla Wardle during World War 1 and moved to Ballarat to marry her. Priscilla was an Australian nurse serving with the QAIMNS and part of her diary is in this collection, and more is held with Ballarat and District Bast Hospital Nurses League also on Victorian Collections. He joined Legacy in Ballarat in 1929 and transferred to Melbourne Legacy in 1935. Even when his health caused him to reduce his commitments to the Reserve list he still found time to attend Legacy and spent many hours each month doing clerical work and fund raising. "Keeping everyone amused with his inexhaustible supply of 'little stories', and in a word, doing a thoroughly good Legacy job." The account of his life was written by Legatee Brian Armstrong (initials JHBA) and has a very affectionate tone. The article was found in the bound copies of the Weekly Bulletin and copied due to the link with Priscilla Wardle when the diary was returned to the family in May 2021.A record of the life and service of Legatee Terry Kirby The information was collected to record the lives of prominent legatees in a folder.Photocopy of a page from the Legacy Weekly Bulletin on the death of Legatee Terry Kirby.Bulletin No. 1961 14 May 1968 page 1.vale, terry kirby -

Magazines, 1944
In November 1932, Frank Packer and Ted Theodore purchased the World, a struggling afternoon newspaper owned and operated by the Australian Workers' Union in Sydney, and re-branded it as the Star. Approached by Sir Hugh Denison, who enjoyed a monopoly over the Sydney newspaper market, they were offered 86,500 Pounds to close the paper if they agreed not to publish a morning, evening or Sunday newspaper within a 300-mile radius of the city for three years. Packer and Theodore accepted the offer, the the Weekly was a way of skirting the embargo, it would be a women's newspaper, and it would be self-sufficient. George Warnecke envisioned the Weekly as a publication with an Australian outlook, appealing to all sections of society, and offering an element of news in every article, whether it concern fashion, cookery, or parenting. When the first issue appeared in Sydney on June 10, 1933, it was printed in black-and-white newspaper format and priced at twopence per copy, "the biggest value in the world". It had sold out by lunchtime. 4 x Australian Women's Weekly magazines. Dated:- 1. December 4, 1943; 2. July 29, 1944; 3. August 5, 1944; and 4. September 2, 1944. All were priced at 4d.magazines -
