Owned by Martin Balsarini, a resident of Chiltern Valley, for use in WW1. Service Number 1682. Martin Balsarini enlisted on the 21/7/1915 and served with the 4th Australian Lighthorse, AIF. He participated in what is known as the last great cavalry charge, the charge of the 4th Australian Lighthorse at Beersheba on the 31/10/1917. Digital image of the Tramways band mid 1920's. Notes from e-mail from Susan Jones - 28/8/2017 Below is a picture of the Tramways Band. After WW1 my grandfather George Arthur Scattergood, along with his brother Charles Scattergood worked for the Tramways. George was a grippy and Charley was a conductor (I think). They were all part of the Tramways band and I found this photo recently among my fathers papers. George Scattergood played the bass drum and is sitting in the centre front beside his drum. He had just returned from 4 years at the front surviving Gallipoli and then sent to the Western front in Possier etc. He often said that being in the infantry band saved his sanity and that on his return joining the Tramways Band gave his life new meaning. He also played in the Malvern City band. 4 years in the trenches without a break must have been shocking so thank you to the Tramways Band. James Roe Lodge was part of the Manchester Unity group.It was unveiled in September 1921.This is a carved decorative white marble honour roll. The title and names (Surname with initials) are carved into the marble. The head piece is a curved top. It has a carved hand with a red heart in the palm. The wrist of the hand is attached to a sphere. Either side of the hand are some branches. On the outside of the branches are the letters "M" on the left and "U" on the right. This is a tall, varnished 'Roll of Honour' . Brown varnish. The top has a small gable under which is the title "ST. JOHNS CHURCH OF ENGLAND" done in gold paint. The two sides are made of a hardwood with two slots routed out of them. The bottom has a small ledge of hardwood. Under the ledge are three curved end pieces. The name section is made from plywood. (It was superseded by a sword and orb with a cross surmounted on the ord). This second pattern lasted til 1918 with the fall of the House of Hohenzouern). 2. CHR REISSER was a well known instrument maker in those days. 3. ULM is a town in Wurtemberg, Germany.This is a brass bugle. On top is a crest, it is set in a raised circle. It features an eagle wearing a crown - wings spread. One talon has a sword, the other talon has what appears to be a mace.
