HMS Iron Duke was a dreadnought battleship of the Royal Navy, the lead ship of her class, named in honour of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. She was built by Portsmouth Dockyard, and her keel laid in January 1912. Launched ten months later, she was commissioned into the Home Fleet in March 1914 as the fleet flagship. She was armed with a main battery of ten 13.5-inch (340 mm) guns and was capable of a top speed of 21.25 knots (39.36 km/h; 24.45 mph). Iron Duke served as the flagship of the Grand Fleet during the First World War, including at the Battle of Jutland. There, she inflicted significant damage on the German battleship SMS König early in the main fleet action. In January 1917, she was relieved as fleet flagship. After the war, Iron Duke operated in the Mediterranean as the flagship of the Mediterranean Fleet. She participated in both the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea and the Greco-Turkish War. She also assisted in the evacuation of refugees from Smyrna. The Great War 1914-1918.This saddle belonged to Martin Balsarini, a soldier in the AIF WW1 4th Light Horse Brigade and who was at the Charge Of Beersheba. Dark Rum coloured leather saddle issued to WW1 soldier Martin Balsarini 4th Light Horse AIF. Saddle has cast iron stirrups x 2 with brass adjustment buckles. There is a restored leather rations barrel attached to the rear of the saddle. The saddle underlay is made of canvas and felt. The Wells of Beersheba is a short romanticized account of the Battle of Beersheba, which took place on 31 October 1917 in Ottoman Palestine during the First World War between the attacking mounted infantry of Australia and New Zealand and the defending Ottoman garrison. It was written by the Australian author Frank Dalby Davison who was not present at the battle, but had been in the British cavalry during the war. Much of the book, which is more fictionalized reportage than novella, and in which no single character is drawn, reflects the codependency of horse and rider and the shock of battle. This booklet was first published in 1933. It was originally published in Sydney in 1933 by Angus & Robertson under the title The Wells of Beersheba. Aussie, a lighthearted account of life in the field for Australian troops during WW1. Featuring stories, cartoons, letters to the editor and much more. Aussie was conceived in November 1914 but it was not until January 18, 1918 that Aussie was first published with a print run of 10,000 copies. The third issue had a print run of 100,000 copies. A couple of single original issues are also in the archive. This was a compilation put together by Phillip Harris from the original editions and printed in Australia in 1920. Funds raised from the sale of the compilation went towards the construction of The Australian War Memorial.Despite the dreadful conditions on the Western Front during the war the Australian troops managed to procure enough rescoures to publish an interesting and humour packed account of life for them as it was.
