This painting shows a historic depiction of Australian whalers in action at sea, and shows the scale of man to whale. Whaling was one of the first industries in early Victoria. John Dollery was born in London in 1933. As a child he loved to draw and was a frequent visitor to the National and Tate Galleries. In 1957 Dollery came to Australia, settling in Queensland in 1965. After receiving a prize in a drawing exhibition, he began painting in oils, and is entirely self-taught. Whilst in Queensland he painted most of his canvases strictly from life and in 1977 he moved to Melbourne where he established himself as a full-time artist. John was very interested in Australia’s history, and most of his work represents this theme. Many of his pieces are in collections both in Australia and overseas. Dollery’s daughter is also an artist and has exhibited both her father's and her own works together in an exhibition 'Now and Then, Father and Daughter'.The painting is a significant work by artist John Dollery. Its subject of whaling shows an early Australian industry and shows the scale of man to whale. The Terminus Hotel was one of the earliest hotels in Wodonga, with clear links to the establishment of the railway line. It was an important business and meeting place from the original construction in 1873 until 1st June 1998 the Terminus Hotel when it was destroyed by fire. It provided a popular venue for social activities, including competitive darts, both through its own competition and as part of the Albury-Wodonga District Darts Association. The remains of the building were demolished in 1999. This is perpetual trophy for the Terminus Dart club based at the Terminus Hotel in Wodonga. This trophy recognises the winners of the Singles Championship from 1985 to 1992. Engravings on the front of the trophy indicate that the competition was held twice a year for most of the years recorded here.The Terminus Hotel was an important meeting place in Wodonga for more than 100 years. The Jubilee of this church was held in 1933. "Paton Memorial Presbyterian Church. BALLARAT, Sunday Jubilee celebrations of the Paton Memorial Presbyterian Church were well attended in the week end. A basket picnic on Saturday at Eureka Stockade reserve was followed at night by a social gathering, at which a birthday cake was cut by Mrs. Amor, a foundation member. On Sunday special services were led by Rev. J. A. Moscript, assisted by the young men of St. John's Church. The church was originally founded, by the late Mrs. J. P. Murray to mission to the needs of the busy mining community which existed in Canadian in early years." (The Age, 06 November 1933.) PATON MEMORIAL CHURCH - An interesting tree-planting ceremony was performed in the grounds of the Paton Memorial Church on Saturday lost. Trees were put in by the scholars of the Sunday school to commemorate the enlistment of all the boys who had in any way been connected with the church. Sunday school, and Young Men's Club. The Mayor (Cr Levy) spoke in terms of praise of the lads who had enlisted to fight for right against might and the tyranny of Prussian militarism. The Hon. R. McGregor MLA., and the Revs. A. H. Moore and W. Rowlands were among those present. on also Mesdames J. P. Murray and McGowan, two of the founders of the church. During the afternoon Cr Levy planted a tree in honor of Mrs Murray. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies of the congregation. (The Age, 06 November 1933.) This church was in the middle of a Chinese neighbourhood, and the 1800s the leprosarium was in the vicinity. A separator is a centrifugal device that separates milk into cream and skimmed milk. Separation was commonly performed on farms in the past. Most farmers milked a few cows, usually by hand, and separated milk with a hand operated machine for domestic use. The milk was poured into the bowl on the top and the handle had to then be turned fast enough to get the separator up to speed adequate to separate the cream and the milk. The milk would come out of one spigot and the cream out of the other. In general practice some of the skimmed milk was consumed by the family, while the rest may have been used to feed calves and pigs. Enough cream was saved to make butter, and the excess was sold. In many cases excess could be bartered or swapped with neighbours for other items of produce. ALFA-LAVAL SEPARATORS The principal works and head office of Aktiebolaget Separator was established by Gustaf de Laval in Stockholm. The first Laval milk separator was patented in1884. In Australia three old established firms commenced pioneering the Alfa Laval cream separators in about 1885. These were A. W. Sandford & Co. Ltd., in Adelaide, J. Bartram & Son, of Melbourne, who have ever since been the Victorian agents of Aktiebolaget Separator. In New South Wales and Queensland, the pioneering firm was Waugh & Josephson Ltd. J. Bartram & Son, the distributor of the separator in this collection, established their business in Melbourne in 1881. In 1892 Bartram & Son estimated that 1,130 of these machines were operating throughout Victoria. This item is significant as it is representative of domestic and dairying machinery used throughout rural areas of Australia in the early to mid 20th century.The separator is made in 3 sections. The base is made from cast iron. The cover and vat are made from silver painted tin. There are 2 outlet spouts. The detachable handle, made from cast iron and wood, is held in place by a screw. Single sheet of paper that appears to have been either taken from a book or was printed as a pamphlet to advertise the routes that Ballarat Tramways (ESCo) ran. On the reverse side is an advertisement for Craig's Hotel, Lydiard St. Ballarat. See image files as well. The sheet has numerous tears on the left side (when viewed from Craigs Hotel) and marks possibly from gluing into a book and pieces of paper missing at about the position where it could have been stapled. Also two pin holes in top corners. The details for Ballarat Tramways notes the use of Fare Boxes, the Electric Supply Company offices being near the Coliseum, and the various colours used on the various routes and points of interest for visitors along the route. Request people to "Enter front end of cars and move right through". The advertisement for Craig's shows a photo of the hotel, motorcars outside , that it has been renovated and sewered throughout, that T.F. McManamny was proprietor. On top and bottom of the photograph, "J. Hesse" has been handwritten in using black ink. A letter "A" is on the lower left hand side of the sheet. Possibly c1920, though the cars could date this more accurately and when T.F. McManamny was the Proprietor. On top and bottom of the photograph, "J. This medal is one of only a few medals donated by a group of generous gentlemen as tokens of their appreciation of the talent and industry of high achieving students in the years 1869 - 1870. The medal was awarded to Charles J Henderson when he completed his Matriculation Examination at the very young age of 13 years. The 1869 College annual report states that this examination, which granted entry into Melbourne University, was held in Ballarat for the first time in 1869. Candidates had to pass in at least six of the nine possible subjects in order to pass. Charles Henderson (born 3/02/1856) was the eldest son of the Rev. William Henderson of St Anderw's Kirk, Ballarat, distinguished founder of Ballarat College. Charles was only the third student enrolled at Ballarat College in July 1864. The Ballarat College annual report 1869 states the medal was awarded in appreciation of his 'success in passing so creditably the Matriculation examination at the age of thirteen years'. This medal has historic significance because it dates from the first decade of the history of the College. It has social significance because the recipient was the third student enrolled at Ballarat College, the eldest son of the founder of the College. The medal is unique and is one of only a few privately donated between 1869-1870 by a group of gentlemen affiliated with the college.This gold-plated round-shaped medal has front embossed with Minerva head, name of school and school motto. The rear of the medal is inscribed with names of medal donors. There is a straight metal pin hinged to the right side of the rear of the medal. There is a small catch attached to left side of the rear of the medal. The side edge of the medal is inscribed with name of the recipient and title of the award. The medal is housed in a rectangular cardboard box and nestled in cotton wool.The box has a blue lid and white base.Embossed around inner edge of medal front "Studiis Claritudo Venit.
