Bookplate, 'Ex Libris Zelma Gartner'
John Gartner was a fine printer and publisher, an author, a noted philatelist, and also collector of Australian banknotes and coins. He was born on 16 July 1914 and was largely self-educated, leaving school at fourteen for work following the death of his father. Gartner developed a strong interest in the history of typography and printing and was apprenticed at the Advocate where his father had been a linotype operator. Aged 17, Gartner bought a hand press and some fonts of type, and in 1937 acquired a platen press from which he set and printed his private press books, published under the imprint of The Hawthorn Press. Gartner had a strong collection of Australian bookplates. He also looked at the work of artists overseas and commissioned personal plates. He subsequently built an international collection with preference for artists who printed from wood. His initial searches were in Belgium and Holland.(http://www3.slv.vic.gov.au/latrobejournal/issue/latrobe-84/t1-g-t7.html) View of a tropical island with tall palms on the beach and low hills in the background beneath a blue skySignature with the number 15bookplate, australian bookplate design award, keith wingrove memorial trust, printmaking -

Work on paper - Photocopy of newspaper cutting, "On The Move/PENGUIN PARADE", circa 1960?
This article is written in a very conversational style with a number of asides and little 'digs' (e.g. Phillip Island being named after "Chap who first began to mess up Port Jackson".) The writer, Peter Fenton, is also relating some ornithological and tourist information, along with how to get to Phillip Island via the first Phillip Island bridge (so pre-1969) or train from Melbourne to Stony Point and across on ferry. The article is significant for demonstrating the growing interest in visiting destinations for natural experiences as well as activities such as golf and motor racing.photocopy of newspaper article cut from newspaper. double column of text with associated map below article. Otway Districts Historical Society
Poster, Colac Herald, Otway Ratepayers' Poll Flyer, 1963, 1963
On 15 January 1964 the Shire of Otway was going to poll its ratepayers about a loan required to build temporary municipal workshops and a Shire Engineer's office in the Apollo Bay Riding. This led to a number of objections at public meetings in the west and central ridings, such that a Committee of protest was formed, with a nominated Chairman, Secretary and members, to put to ratepayers their considered point-of-view of disapproval. After drafts the Committee produced a printed flyer for distribution to ratepayers summarising the Committee's position. The Committee knew and agreed with a Council Sub-Committee's recommendation to Council of a new, adequate building on one site of suitable size. However, this did not happen. Instead Council moved for loans for temporary renovations of existing buildings. This the Committee objected to believing that Council must decide on a final location before any consideration is given to borrowing money for temporary repairs. This was the opinion the Committee put to ratepayers.B/W Flyer. Otway Ratepayers' Poll on January 15. This concerns YOU. To the Ratepayer as addressed.
