he invasion of Italy by France in 1494 sowed the dragon's teeth of all successive European wars, and accelerated the pressures to devise ever more effective armaments and methods of warfare." "This account of the story of arms over the period covers in detail the development of the handgun and the pike, the use and style of staff-weapons, mace and axe and war-hammer, dagger and dirk and bayonet. Armour is shown attaining its full Renaissance splendour then suffering its later decline; the history of the sword, Ewart Oakeshott's special interest, is followed to the late eighteenth century when it ceased to be part of everyday wear: cause or effect, the far-reaching effects of the Industrial Revolution on military armaments had begun.Index, bib, ill, p.288.non-fictionhe invasion of Italy by France in 1494 sowed the dragon's teeth of all successive European wars, and accelerated the pressures to devise ever more effective armaments and methods of warfare." Cannula placement set, Bardic, c. 1980
Cholera swept a deadly path through Europe in 1832. Irish physician, William O’Shaughnessy, proposed treating patients with saline infusions and Dr Thomas Latta of Leith, successfully applied the treatment. The intravenous route is the fastest way to deliver fluids and medications through the body. Today, fluid therapy is one of the most widespread interventions in acute medicine. Clear plastic strip adhered to white paper backing, forming a sealed packet containing a cardboard backing board, with a cannula attached.Stamped in black ink on 3929.1: CAT: / NO. 1966 / CATHETER: 14 GA. / .058 I.D. / 5 1/2 IN. / 0182037 Stamped in black ink on 3929.2: CAT: / NO. 1967 / CATHETER: 16 GA. .044 I.D. / 5 1/2 IN. / 0189037intravenous, cannula, fluid therapy, william o'shaughnessy, thomas latta -

Painting, Bruce Fletcher, Dust Off, 1980
The painting was donated to ANZCA in 1995 by Dr Bernard Dunn. Bruce Fletcher, from Melbourne Victoria, studied under William Dargie, who had been an official war artist during the second world war. Fletcher followed the same pathway as his mentor and was the first of two official war artists appointed during the Vietnam War. His artwork are held in the art collection of the Australin War Memorial, Canberra. The title of the painting, 'Dust Off' is a term adopted in Vietnam which refers to the medical evacuation of sick or wounded soldiers, from the field, by a helicopter. It was originally a radio call sign selected from a US Navy Signal Operations book in 1963. [ref. 'Medicine at War. 1950-1972'].In June 2012, a Royal Children's Hospital Anaesthetic Registrar attended a College Tour conducted by Dr Rod Westhorpe when he saw the painting and informed us that the term 'Dust off' emanates from the Korean War and is in fact the acronym for Decisive, Unwavering, Support to our Fighting Forces'. The painting was based on a black and white photograph taken in Vietnam in 1971. An image of the photograph is located in the electronic supplementary file. Oil painting on board of a scene in which a military helicopter is about to land with a group of soldiers in the foreground, one wounded and one soldier standing. A cargo military helicopter is in the distance flying away from the scene. The painting is set in a gold frame.[plaque affixed to centre front of frame] DUST OFF \ BY BRUCE FLETCHER \ DEPICTING THE MEDICAL EVACUATION \ OF WOUNDED SOLDIERS FROM THE FIELD \ IN VIETNAM \ PRESENTED BY \ DR BERNARD L.
