Work on paper - On the Trail of the Lone Pine, Pine Cones from the Gallipoli Battlefield, April - June 2011
Sergeant Keith McDowell gave a cone he collected from Gallipoli to his aunt to try and grow. One seed was planted in the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens and another at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. These pine trees have symbolic importance as a representation of Australian soldiers' "tenacity and fortitude". They are an important link to the remembrance of those men and women from Ballarat who saw action in World War 1.3 pages (pp.44-46). p.44 in black print on white paper, a photograph of the planting of one of the pines in 1934 at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra. p.45 is a coloured picture of the pine in Canberra. p46 has a history of the seeds brought from Gallipoli by Smith and Mcdowell on the right-hand side of the page and a photograph of the Pines being labelled. The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph, 1877
Taken in Beechworth 1867, this photograph depicts the Bank of Victoria on the corner of Camp and Ford Street. This building was erected in 1867 to replace the former bank that was destroyed by a fire on the same site. This classical style structure was designed by architects Smith and Johnson who designed many of the public buildings in Melbourne and Victoria. Arthur Ebden Johnson, 1821–1895 and Alfred Louis Smith, 1830–1907 were appointed as the Bank of Victoria's architects who, in-conjunction with the Branch in Beechworth, also completed branches in Wangaratta and Bendigo. This photograph was taken and produced by the American and Australasian Photographic Company which was founded by Beaufoy Merlin joined by his assistant, Charles Bayliss and Augustus Clinton, and operated between 1866-1873. The company traveled throughout Victoria and New South Wales before establishing a portrait studio in Sydney. There is no apparent connection to America. Sepia rectangular photograph. Orbost & District Historical Society
drawing book, Whitcombe's progressive Drawing Book No.1, 1920's
This book belonged to Roma Cameron. In the 1920's most of children's school work was done in copy books. Drawing as a subject generally began in Year 2. Each day's work was carefully dated and checked by the teacher, always ready for an inspector's visit. Roma Cameron was the daughter of Harry Purchase Cameron and Lilian Gladys (nee Harding). Roma married Ronald Richard Smith in 1944 and is the mother of Lorraine (Mrs Peter Coulton) and Margaret Smith. Harry's father, James Cameron, came to Bellagoogan on Majors Creek in 1882. Bellagoogan was on Majors Creek near Orbost and was the site of the first race course. Like many others at the time, the Camerons bred race horses.Harry died in 1964 aged 75. Roma was the youngest of three siblings: Jean (Mrs John Gavin (Jack) Ralston) and James (Jim) (m. Joan Hosack). This book is an example of school work in the early 20th century. The Cameron family are prominent members of the Orbost community. A small book with a grey cover. Inside are simple shapes to be copied.inside cover: Roma Cameron 1928education book-drawing cameron -

Melbourne Legacy
Book, The Ron Barassi Collection Auction Catalogue, 2016
An auction catalogue of items being sold by AFL personality Ron Barassi in 2016. It appears to be a signed copy. The second last page is a note of thanks to Legacy for the help they gave Ron as a boy and mentions he made Legacy his lifelong charity. A note that accompanied the catalogue mentions Ron Barassi donated a significant amount of the sale proceeds to Legacy. Ron Barassi was helped by Legacy as a boy after his father, Ronald Barassi Snr died at Tobruk in 1941. Ron Barassi Snr was also a football player for Melbourne Football club. The catalogue on page 8 mentions that when his mother remarried and moved to Tasmania, Ron stayed in Melbourne with Norm Smith and family to further his football career. This is unlikely to be Legatee Norm Smith. Ron Barassi helped promote Legacy in many ways and at many events over many years.A record of important personalities such as Ron Barassi chose to donate to Legacy.Colour 104 page auction catalogue of items belonging to Ron Barassi.ron barassi, donations -
