Painting, Roger Edwards, A Bushfire Response, 2016
Since moving on from tonal pen and pencil work many years ago watercolour has been my medium preference for painting Flora and Fauna. Although better known for my Australian bird studies I do like to portray remnant grassland featuring the terrestrial orchids that occur there. As a Forest Officer for the past 40 odd years working in and around the Grampians area I have been blessed with the opportunity to observe and study much of the wildlife of the area. If you can imagine a peregrine falcon swooping down from a ledge, echidna playing trains, goanna striding to a tree or a sittella placing shingles on the nest This has been much of my life as a forester and artist. This work is one of a number painted by the artist after bushfires in the Grampians. Roger Edwards was a Forest Officer, posted to Cavendish, in SW corner of the Grampians, in 1975. In the 1980s he photographed details of the wildflowers and their recovery after fire. He retired in 2018, enabling him to devote more time to his art.Environment, Wildflowers, Landscape, Botanic artGift of Rob Youl to commemorate artist, Betty Conabere. This painting shows orchids and other native plants regrowing after Grampians bushfire. It is an aesthetic depiction of important ecological processes. wildflowers, lanscape, orchids, bushfire, grampians, environment, recovery after fire, botanic art -

Photograph, Michael Cook, Invasion (UFO Possums), 2016
Invasion places an imaginative eye in Australian colonial history and turns around the dominant view, taking alien creatures into iconic London-based cityscapes, with white urban residents their victims. Cook's images express the shock that enveloped the Australian continent when European people appeared on Aboriginal shores. Aboriginals as aliens, sci-fi scaled animals - featherless birds, super sized grubs, giant lizards, possums on ufo's, laser shooting fembots, and clouds of rainbow lorikeets - arrive into urban London, the 'mother' country, and wreak havoc. Within the broad narrative are mini narratives that speak to the past, historical references that tease out and reverse the racist practices imposed on Aboriginals. The drama of such an event heightened with the use of vintage-inspired B-grade horror movie aesthetic - an ironic 'spoofy' edge.australian first nations art, photography, colonialisation, sci-fi -

Photograph - Archival inkjet print, Janelle Low, Untitled #1, 2016
“Maybe here” is a constant thought running through the back of my mind that something might happen where I’m standing. Tension builds at the slightest sound or suggestion of movement. How much of this fear is self-perpetuated and how much of it is warranted. How different would my experience be if I was someone else. This series is a departure from Janelle Low’s conceptual interests around Australian identity and multiculturalism. Using the project as a vehicle to confront and challenge her own personal concerns as well as a means to represent a more universal female experience.Donated by the artist -

Oil on board, Shaun Tan, Octopus 2, 2016
Shaun Tan is best known for his illustrated books and short films that deal with social, political and historical subjects through dream-like imagery and fantastic creatures. In addition to his book and film work, Tan is a respected and prolific painter. Octopus 2 is one of three paintings of Anstey Station, which is next to Tan’s art studio. Nearby, there is an octopus painted on the roller door of a bait shop. Tan observes that the octopus is usually only visible at night, and then not very well: "It is an eerie vision, a bit comical too. There is something about the tucked-away grouping of high and low walls, the amber light and the jumble of signage that I find very evocative, as if there is some spirit being tucked up in this unlooked-at pocket of the rail-line”. -

Oil on board, Shaun Tan, Jewell Station, Night, 2016
Shaun Tan is best known for his illustrated books and short films that deal with social, political and historical subjects through dream-like imagery and fantastic creatures. In addition to his book and film work, Tan is a respected and prolific painter. Tan’s paintings capture a sense of place and atmosphere, even when the specific location is not made explicit. Tan says of his practice: “Often I don’t know why I need to paint a certain scene, only that I do, as if to stop it from drifting away too quickly, to just allow a little more time to think about it. Or to just say ‘I saw this’”. -

Gloss enamel painted paper collage, Louise Paramor, Boomtown, 2016
Louise Paramor says, “I just love colour and playing around with it, it makes me feel good. I get a kick out of harmonising colour in conjunction with form. I think if there was more finely tuned colour in the world it would be a better place. There exists a lot of untamed colour in the everyday and to me this is often creates a feeling that is the opposite of uplifting.” In this work, Paramor creates a utopian building from collaged pieces of paper, which have been painted in planes of coloured enamel. Often these collages become sculptures, for which Paramor is mainly known. Andy Gomez writes of Boomtown, “Louise Paramor invites us into her own fabricated domain, where colours are coherent and vivid, buildings are unique and non-conformist, where public sculpture exists for the sake of form, colour, line, and levity. There is an inherent optimism at work here, exalting the accomplishments and ingenuity of the urban sprawl and the enforced participation of a shared culture and experience that offers.” -
