In the past, milk was always packaged in glass milk bottles The first glass bottle packaging for milk was used in the 1870s. The first company to do so may have been the New York Dairy Company in 1877 with a small glass lid and a tin clip. Lewis P. Whiteman holds the first patent for a glass milk bottle c1884,which was sealed with a waxed paper disk. The Express Dairy Company in England began glass bottle production in 1880. Melbourne Glass Bottle Works Spotswood 1880 - 1990. Milk cartons first came to Australia in 1958, when the Model Dairy in Melbourne began packaging milk in 150 ml and 500 ml cartons. At the time, 160,000 new glass bottles were needed in Melbourne alone every week to keep up the delivery of 1.3 million bottles of milk a day. n 1970, the blow-moulded disposable plastic milk bottle was introduced. In 1987, only about 2% of milk was still being sold in glass bottles. Cap Badge for the "Chief Inspector". Made from cast brass to indicate the position held by the wearer on their cap as part of their uniform. Cast in the form of the handwritten or script word/s and underlined. On the rear, silver soldered on are two brass loops at either side of the badge to enable to be sewn or fitted with clips onto the cap. On the back of the back of the badge in very small letters is the name of the manufacturer - Stokes & Sons / Melbourne. Used by the SEC only? Titled "Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board / Rules and Regulations / Relation to Drivers and Conductors / (Electric System) / 1935. Has stamped number "498", issued to "L. J. Denmead 1584". Provides for 214 General Rules - in four sections - General, Accident Prevention, Procedure in Case of Accidents, Tickets, Fares Cash etc and By-Law No. 5 - General dated 4/5/1922. On both inside covers are printed warning messages about safety. On the inside cover in ink "L. J. Denmead 1584" and on title sheet "Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society Catalogue No. 305" in ink. Sign, painted onto a MMTB auxiliary destination board of the type that could hang on the front of a Melbourne tram car with the words "St Kilda Football Ground" Black letters on a yellow background. The bottom right hand corner of the St Kilda has the letters "G.H." indicating the depot that it belonged to - East Preston. The reverse side has been painted in black and a "Shop early" for Christmas sing has been pasted onto it. Metal sign, fitted with metal hanging brackets, riveted to sign on both sides. Twelve page report, gloss paper, orange covers and a brown comb binder, titled "Automatic Vehicle Monitoring System" August 1979 describing the introduction of the AVM system by the MMTB into Melbourne for both trams and buses. Gives the background to the system, how it works, what it can do, diagrams, photographs of Hamburg and Los Angeles, notes on how it can improve services and MMTB planning for the system including photographs of a bus in West Heidelberg where preliminary testing was being undertaken at the time. A four motor bogie drop centre combination tram of the Melbourne W7 class No. 1029, built at Preston Workshops during 1956, entered service on 1/2/1956. Donated by Barbara GARDINER, daughter of William HEGARTY, centre. This strong team, founded before WWI, later served as PMFC seconds and provided many top players to PMFC. By 1925 Railway United were effectively the PMFC Seconds and were referred to in the media as Port Melbourne Junior Football Club although the Railway United name remained in use locally for many years. The Victorian Junior Football Association (VJFA) had been split into two sections. Section B consisted of teams associated with senior clubs playing in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) with unaligned teams making up Section A. Finals were played between the top teams in each section and then the two winners (premiers) played off in a final match to determine which club won the John Wren Shield as premier of the VJFA. 1925: Port Melbourne 12.11.83 def Williamstown 6.12.48 at Yarraville on 5 Sep 1925 to claim the B Section premiership.
