Handwritten in ink on flyleaf ''This work was sent me in 1943 by Mrs Edelsten who now reports - August '44 that the author has been killed in action in Normandy. Sad ! A.H.C.'' also ''The Rawlins were family friends of the Edelstein's, who of course were descendants of John Gould.'' Inside the front cover is a copy of a typed letter (by A. H. R.A.M.C. - Royal Army Medical Corps - British. Uniform issued to "Captain McKenzie". Refer Cat No. 7874.2 and 7876.2.1. Jacket - Mess Dress style. Black and crimson colour wool fabric. Crimson colour fabric on rolled collar and sleeve cuffs. On collar are two gold and silver metal collar badges - crown, snake on pole, laurel wreath and ribbon scroll with lettering "ROYAL ARMY MEDICAL CORPS" British - Tailor made. Shoulder epaulettes - fabric with three tarnished gold, blue and green metal rank pips = Captain. Gold colour buttons with shank, raised emblem and lettering (same as collar badges). Lining - crimson colour body of jacket with concealed internal pocket. Sleeves - white colour cotton fabric. Manufacturers label on white colour cotton fabric, back, inside collar. 2. Vest - crimson colour wool fabric, front two inset pockets and four buttons (as above). Back - crimson colour cotton sateen fabric with strap and brass metal buckle for size adjustment. Lining - cream colour cotton fabric. 3. Trousers - black colour wool fabric with five button fly, fob pocket cream colour cotton lining to waistband and fob pocket. Black colour Bakelite buttons. Two silver colour metal buttons at back. Manufacturers label on white colour cotton label with black ink print and handwritten details - back, inside below waistband lining. 4. & 5. Uniform - Tie, 1939-1945
This men's khaki tie was issued to Dr W R Angus by the Australian Army to their men during WWII. The tie is now part of Flagstaff Hill’s comprehensive W.R. Angus Collection, donated by the family of Dr W R Angus (1901-1970), surgeon and oculist. Dr W R Angus was a Surgeon Captain for the Australian Defence Forces, Army Medical Corps, stationed in Ballarat, Victoria, and in Bonegilla, N.S.W. He completed his service just before the end of the war due to suffering from a heart attack. The W.R. Angus Collection: - The W.R. Angus Collection includes historical medical equipment, surgical instruments and material belonging to Dr Edward Ryan and Dr Thomas Francis Ryan, (both of Nhill, Victoria) and Dr Angus’ own belongings. The Collection’s history spans the medical practices of the two Doctors Ryan, from 1885-1926 plus that of Dr Angus, up until 1969. It includes historical medical and surgical equipment and instruments from the doctors Edward and Thomas Ryan of Nhill, Victoria. Dr Angus married Gladys in 1927 at Ballarat, the nearest big city to Nhill where he began as a Medical Assistant. He was also Acting House surgeon at the Nhill hospital where their two daughters were born. During World War II He served as a Military Doctor in the Australian Defence Forces. Dr Angus and his family moved to Warrnambool in 1939, where Dr Angus operated his own medical practice. He later added the part-time Port Medical Officer responsibility and was the last person appointed to that position. Both Dr Angus and his wife were very involved in the local community, including the planning stages of the new Flagstaff Hill and the layout of the gardens there. Dr Angus passed away in March 1970.This tie is significant for its connection with Australia's Military History as part of the uniform worn by officers in the Australian Army. The tie is a khaki-coloured lightweight fabric with an uneven point on the ends. The front-facing end is wider than the rear-facing end. Equipment - Sewing Kit, 1939-1945
This sewing kit was issued to W.R. Angus during his Military Service in WWII. It is sometimes referred to as a soldier's ‘housewife’ and includes items necessary for mending and adjusting a soldier’s clothing and other fabric items. Earlier Army issue sewing kits were made of leather but were subject to deterioration due to holding moisture if they became wet. The sewing kit is now part of Flagstaff Hill’s comprehensive W.R. This book was hand made in Bendigo and presented to the Army Survey Regiment Sergeants Mess by WO2 Graham Squire (Later WO1 RSM RASvy). The book is to record events when the Sgts Mess Bell was rung, signaling that money was put over the bar for those present. Events such as promotions, departures, birthdays, birth of children and grandchildren were celebrated in this way and hence recorded in this book. The Bell itself was presented by WO1 Alex "Darby" Munro and that is the reason for the naming of the book "Darby's Clangers, Times and Chimes". the first entry in the book is 30 Nov 1978 and the last entry is 29 Nov1996 to celebrate the departure of the last serving members of the unit.Large handmade book with many unused pages, book is housed in a vinyl covered cardboard box.Page 1 Top - " Please leave first entry space vacant for WO2 G Squire (Fishing Warden), Thank you, Max Neil WO2 for PMC" Page 1 Bottom - "The one that got away!" The Regiment served in the Middle East (1940-43) as part of the 9th Australian Division.
