Melbourne Legacy
Book, Printed Forms. Junior Legacy
This portfolio of printed forms, letters and reports has been assembled to show how Melbourne Legacy, in the past, has kept in contact with Legatees, widows, their families and the records of the above mentioned. The information would be typed or handwritten, then posted and delivered to Legacy Melbourne, Legatees or widows and families. Types of form include 'First Contact Form' to record the details of the families. Also printed cards for noting dental appointments. A typical letter that is sent to the widow on Legacy receiving news of the death of an ex-serviceman. One of the proforma letters is signed by Legatee A Dore who was President in 1965 so the forms are from the 1960s.A record of work practices within Legacy.Brown patterned cardboard cover. Melbourne Legacy
Document, The "Junior Legacy, Melbourne" Special Appeal 1956, 1956
This letter to Legatees was issued with the Weekly Bulletin on 28 August 1956, this was just before the first ever appeal to the public for donations. The letter outlines the purpose of the Appeal and how it will be launched by the Governor Sir Dallas Brookes and the timeline. Also that it had support from four leading newspapers and radio stations. It mentions a brochure "the Legacy Boy" and a brochure depicting the new building that will be mailed to Companies that Legatees had contacted (see 01264). The newsletter appears to be a normal example of the Weekly Bulletin. This was in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy. Appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. The call for public donations was partially due to the purchase of the Dureau building and the need to modify the building for Legacy's needs. The documents from this folder have been added in seperate records (see 01262 to 01282). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1950s.The documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1950s. Legatee Cyril Smith and others were detailing their experiences and knowledge for the future. The Special Appeal in 1956 was the first undertaking to ask the public for donations.A foolscap typed letter to Legatees attached to a copy of the 8 page Weekly Bulletin newsletter from 28/8/1956.history, legacy appeal, fundraising -

Melbourne Legacy
Uniform, Girls Uniform
A green tunic made for junior legatees to attend girls' classes. It is in great condition and is an excellent example of the uniforms used at Legacy classes. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. Melbourne Legacy would then conduct Annual Demonstrations to showcase their skills. Legacy provided uniforms free of charge for all girls attending the classes. Typical of the time the tunic appears hand made but many mothers and legatee wives would have been capable of making uniforms as they also made many of the costumes for the annual demonstrations. The tunic was donated back to Legacy from the family of Estelle Du Lieu, nee Mutimer.A fantastic example of a uniform that was a symbol of membership of Legacy classes.A green cotton tunic with a Junior Legacy Club emblem used by junior legatees in Girls' Classes.girls classes, uniform, jlc -

Object, School of Mines Ballarat Lapel Badge, c1920s
Tertiary education at Ballarat began with the establishment of the School of Mines in 1870, making it Australia's third oldest tertiary institution. Classes began in surveying, mathematics, chemistry and a decade later they included metallurgy, assaying and geology. The technical division provided such programs as wool classing, plumbing and bricklaying. In 1967, it was split into three separate institutions, Ballarat School of Industries, Ballarat Technical School, and Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education. Then in 1976 the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education became into Ballarat College of Advanced Education. The Ballarat School of Industries and Ballarat Technical School became the School of Mines and Industries, Ballarat (SMB). In 1998, the Ballarat School of Mines and Industries and the Horsham-based Wimmera Institute of TAFE merged with the University of Ballarat. The university merged with Monash University's Gippsland (Churchill) campus in 2013 and the merged schools are now the Federation University AustraliaThese Coat of Arms of the School of Mines Ballarat are circular lapel badges and are made of sterling silver and enamel. Newspaper - Newspaper clipping, Ballarat East High School, c1957
Ballarat East: This year is the third anniversary of the opening of our modern Ballarat East High School. We are growing, with 360 pupils, ranging from the first to the fourth form. At our speech night last year, we had Kevan Gosper (a member of the Australian Olympic Team) to present the sports awards. We are also to be represented for the first time at the combined swimming sports in the new Olympic pool. - Lynette Pascoe (14) Humffray St North, Ballarat East.A newspaper clipping concerning the early days of Ballarat East High School. behs, ballarat east high school, ballarat east, magazine, kevan gosper, 1957
