Souvenir Guidebook, Aleppo and its Environs
A pocket size booklet with a series of articles about Aleppo, Syria. This booklet was sent to an Australian family by a local citizen befriended by an Australia soldier serving in Syria during World War 2. The book inner cover is marked "To Val with best wishes from Bert?? Aleppo 1-2-47". Souvenir Handkerchief
Cloth handkerchief sent to family in Australia by Noel Louis Blundell, a 2nd AIF serviceman in Syria during World War 2. The handkerchief is maroon in colour and made from a square piece of silk-like cloth. The edges of the cloth have been cut in decorative pattern. The cloth has been decorated with a paint like material on one side which is gold in colour and contains some golden glitter particles.The handkerchief is inscribed around the perimeter with the following words "MEMORY OF SYRIA" and "SOUVENIR D'SYRIE". In one corner of the square there is a bird (dove?) holding a flag as it is flying over another inscription "SOUVENIR D'SYRIE". Above the flag are 17 stars. Christmas card sent to a family in Australia by Australian Army serviceman, Noel Blundell who served in Syria during World war 2. The card is in the form of a booklet consisting of the cover and one double page insert. The card front cover has the Australian 'Rising Sun' badge and the words "9th Australian Divisional Cavalry Regiment" and "A. I. F.". The centre pages have an illustration of a village scene on the left page and the words "A Merry Christmas And A Happy New Year" printed on the right page. The serviceman has written "To Alice From Noel" beneath the Christmas message. At the bottom of this page are the words "MIDDLE EAST" and "DECEMBER 1941". Christmas card which was sent to a family in Australia by Australian Army serviceman, Lewis Jones who served during World War 2. The card is in the form of a small folded card. The front cover has the Australian 'Rising Sun' badge printed above the following words "Christmas Greetings from 2/11 Battalion A. I. F.". There is some ornate artwork on this cover and a small illustration which appears to be of a middle east village scene. Heliograph
Signalling heliograph which has been manufactured using a variety of military hardware items. Presumably this heliograph was improvised in the field as a result of damage to a standard issue item. This heliograph has parts which have been sourced from other standard military issue equipment, for example, knobs from cooking pots. The item uses the mirrors which are normally found in the standard issue heliograph. This heliograph has two large mirrors (for long distance signalling) and a smaller mirror (for short distance signalling). The mirrors are mounted on adjustable arms for positioning and aiming.no markings to note -

Nine soldiers, looking back over their shoulder, are depicted as they make their way up a gangway to a ship. One soldier can be identified with his name and part of his service number prominently displayed on his kitbag. The soldier is James Ellis Liebe, service number VX21644. Framed collection of railway spikes and clips from the Thai-Burma Railway recovered from Hell Fire Pass in 1987. These items were recovered during a visit to the site by Australian Army World War 2 ex-serviceman John William Toon, service number VX30397. J W Toon (also known as Bill Toon) served with the 8th Division and was a prisoner of war. -

This bible was originally owned by a World War 2 Australian Army serviceman, Gunner A. E. Sands, service number V 195271.The sleeve is labelled ""ACTIVE SERVICE" EDITION, OXFORD TEXT BIBLE, Oxford India Paper, Beryl 32mo, SA2701/2" The bible is inscribed "HOLY BIBLE" in gold embossed letters on the front cover and the spine, there is also the word "OXFORD" in gold embossed letters on the spine. -

Emergency Ration Tin, AMF, A Gadsen Container
This type of ration tin was issued during the latter part of the Second World War. These rations were issued to every soldier involved in operations and were only to be opened if no other source of food was available.An unopened olive drab Australian Military Forces (AMF) Emergency Ration Tin. There are instructions printed in black ink on the inside surface of the lid. This should read 'INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE / To be consumed as found. / 1. HOT CHOCOLATE (if preferred) / Break up chocolate block and dissolve in hot water. / 2. TEA TABLETS: / Use one per pannikin, adding boiling water and sugar if required. / 3. SALT TABLETS : / To reduce fatigue and cure muscle cramp, take either in water or as desired. Normally stamped in the inside of an opened ration tin would be date, such as '10-44' indicating that it was produced in October 1944. The outside of the tin has printed in black ink 'A.M.F. / EMERGENCY RATION / D (Government broad arrow) D / . The bottom surface of the ration tin has printed in black ink " To be consumed only when no other rations of any kind are procurable. Consumption of this ration must be reported at first opportunity.
