Postcard, Sturt St, Ballarat"
Printed colour postcard of a horse tram travelling on the north side of Sturt St towards Lydiard St. Tram is travelling on the "right side of the road", which is unusual, horse trams normally travelled in bound on the south side or the "wrong side". Close examination shows three (3) horses on the tram, the middle appearing to be fairly small. In the back ground are the buildings on the south side of Sturt St include Harry Davies & Co. store, Stansfield & Smith Paper Warehouse. On rear is places for correspondences stamp, address. Handwritten on rear is "This will give you a fair idea of the beautiful Sturt St Ballarat. It is the prettiest I have seen. Yours " Dated 19/10/1905. Addressed to Mrs. H Digby, Callan Park Sydney NSW. Has a red Victorian 1d stamp, cancelled Melbourne 19/10/1905. Printed black and white postcard of the Ballarat Town Hall, with horse cabs in the median strip - prior to the development of the median strip. Has the large gas lamp in the centre of the intersection with Armstrong St. Card has been unused. No horse tram lines visible, but could be there. Photo assumed to be c1900, but could be pre 1887. Published by Nucolorvue Productions, Mentone, Victoria. Inside the folder is a printed note on Ballarat, with a note that it was just embarking on its second century, and has a population of 40,000 people. Printed c1955. Inside the folder was a two sided strip of 12 photos, that was glued to the folder. Features photos of the Botanic Gardens, Eureka stockade, floral clock in Sturt St, a view from the Town Hall with a tram parked in the City Loop, Civic Hall, the crown at Shell House, Sturt St at Lydiard St with a tram parked at the City centre and the Arch of Victory. Printed black and white postcard of the Sturt St looking west from Grenville St. Has the large gas lamp in the centre of the intersection with Grenville St. Card had a stamp on the photo side, but has been removed - only the remnants of the gum and postmark remain. No horse tram lines visible. Photo assumed to be pre 1887. Written on the front "Best Wishes from Dorrie ?" and date "8/4/06". Set of 15 black and white views of Ballarat printed on a folded strip, glued within a grey colour cardboard folder, titled "Photographic View Booklet Ballarat". Booklet printed with an address area within a leaf and on the rear, an area where the sender could write their name. Produced by The Valentine Publishing Co. Pty Ltd Melbourne.
