The Municipality of Kew (1860-1863), the Borough of Kew (1863-1910), the Town of Kew (1910-1921) and the City of Kew (1921-1994) were local government instrumentalities in the State of Victoria. In 1994, the City of Kew was amalgamated, together with the former Cities of Camberwell and Hawthorn, into the new City of Boroondara (1994- ). Like other local government entities of the period, Kew was administered by town clerks. The two notable town clerks in Kew's history were H. H. (Henry Hirst) Harrison (1868-1955) and W. D. (William Dickie) Birrell (1899-1974). Harrison was appointed to the position in 1901 and retired in 1938 after 37 years. Birrell, appointed Acting Town Clerk in 1921, became Town Clerk in 1938, following Harrison's retirement. He continued in this role until his retirement in 1966.This card is part of an historically significant civic collection, containing hundreds of separate invitations, documents, greeting cards, programmes and tickets issued and/or collected by successive town clerks. Items in the collection illuminate the political, social and cultural history of the district. This is an original programme issued when the Warrnambool Theatre was opened in 1930 in Kepler Street. The programme for the premiere of the picture theatre included an ‘all talking’ feature, ‘Hollywood Revue’ and all of the 1150 seats were filled. The building replaced the Palais de Danse and the Mansions Theatre, part of the Hotel Mansions destroyed by fire in 1929. The architects for the new theatre were Bohringer, Taylor and Johnson in association with R.A. Le Poer Terry and H. Mervyn Thompson. The Warrnambool Theatre, one of six cinemas in Victoria built in the Spanish Mission style, was renamed the Capitol Theatre in 1935. In 1994 the Capitol Theatre interior was renovated and the rare original design features (only 3 remaining in Victoria at the time) were covered up.This programme has considerable interest as it concerns the opening of the Warrnambool Theatre (later the Capitol Theatre) in Warrnambool. This is a significant building in Warrnambool because of its architecture.This is a programme with a cover and one insert sheet folded into two. The cover is blue with red printing and has an image of the Warrnambool Picture Theatre on the front. The insert pages are buff-coloured with red printing and several advertisements. This gown was worn by Shirley Falkinder (nee Ogden). She was the principal nurse educator and lecturer at the Ballarat Base Hospital from 1973-1985 when nurse education was hospital based. She was seconded to prepare the Accreditation document for a three year "Diploma of Applied Nursing", which commenced at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education in 1986 and she retired in 1989. Shirley continued her interest in the education of nurses and became the Vice President of the Ballarat University College Council in 1990 and President in 1991.A black polyester and wood academic gown with a wide red (edged with white) silk lapel. Across the shoulders and below the back yoke there are padded pin tucks which form gathers. The long sleeves reach to within 8 cm of the hemline of the garment. This Chancellor's academic gown was worn by Professor David Caro during his time as the University of Ballarat's Chancellor from 1998-2005. Among his many roles during his long career, he was Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Melbourne, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Tasmania, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne & Interim Vice-Chancellor at Northern Territory University. The Chancellor's academic gown is of royal blue light weight woollen cloth trimmed with gold oak-leaf braid on the facings, yoke and bottom hem; and sleeves with one gold embroided frog at the shoulder and four chevrons of gold oak-leaf braid below the arm hole. This Chancellor's academic gown was worn by Emeritus Professor Robert H T Smith AM during his time as the University of Ballarat's Chancellor from 2005 -2012. He studied at the University of New England, then went on to complete a Master's Degree at Northwestern University of Evanston, Illinois and a received a PhD from ANU in 1962. He spent much of his career in Canada and upon returning to Australia had posts of Vice-Chancellor at The Universities of Western Australia & New England. Academic gowns distinguish between the University's senior office holders and our graduates. Federation University's Chancellor wears a blue robe that is trimmed with gold and features a gold embroidered frog at the shoulder and gold oak-leaf braid below the arm hole. The Deputy Chancellor and the Vice-Chancellor also wear blue robes, with gold trims and different designs inclorporating the gold oak-leaf braid, ord or tassels. The members of the university Council wear black robes with a sole of gold. Our graduates wear black robes, with either a black trancher cap or bonnet (for professional octorate) with stoles, linings or trims in the colour of their discipline. This is a programme of the Warrnambool City Council Civic & Thanksgiving Official Service on November 1918. The service was held in the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens, conducted by the Ministers of the Churches in Warrnambool and led by the combined choirs of the churches. It was a public occasion held to offer thanksgiving for the end of World War One in November 1918. One of the hymns sung had the opening lines: ‘O God of Love, O King of Peace/Make wars throughout the world to cease’. The service was attended by the Mayor of Warrnambool and the City Councillors and Council employees. World War One was a signal event in the history of Warrnanmbool (as it was for all places in Australia) with so many young men volunteering for active service and so many dying overseas.This programme is of great interest as it records an important occasion in Warrnambool – the end of World War One and the official service of thanksgiving that commemorated this happening. There is blue printed material on three of the pages. The front page has the City of Warrnambool crest printed in blue with blue edging on the page and some ornamental patterns.
