Brace and bits are believed to be 120 years old.|Tools used by Mrs Duncan's grandfather, when he was a carpenter on the clipper ship of the 1870's between England and Australia.'U-shaped brace with wooden handle at one end, a wooden ball in centre and a rectangular metal block at the other end. Into this block are inserted the various drill bits . Bits are of various sizes shaped with a start screw and then the cutting edge. Rest of the drill is like a corkscrew. The "letters to Lillie" show the international nature of the Mission to Seafarers. They are an important display of the handwriting style of the time, revealing courting attempts and give us an insight into life in 1925. Included in the G W Duncan collection this item of memorabilia from 1948 may have been acquired quite early in the donor's career as a ship's engineer. The menu provides a glimpse of shipboard diet and especially celebratory food.Mariner Duncan had a particular regard for the Mission to Seafarers. This plate for display on a commissioned new table at the MTSV chapel acknowledges his bequest and the material donated. Collectively the G W Duncan material includes: photographs, professional data memorabilia and written and commercially printed resources. The memorabilia relates to his career at sea and in particular the role of an engineer, including a handwritten manual of notes and references relating to the mechanical and engineering aspects and areas of responsibility for maintenance. This is one letter in a series of eighteen letters written by various seafarers to Lillie Duncan. Lillie was a member of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild and, as a Guild member, was strongly involved with the social activities and events organised to entertain visiting seafarers. The Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild was an integral arm of the fundraising that enabled the building of the Mission to Seafarers. This was probably part of a real estate promotion for the sale of the Riversdale Heights Estate. This was subdivided by Messrs. Duncan and Weller. Of the allotments offered, 30 were sold and realised £4600. Date of this sale was c December 1923. This suggests that the date This are was one of the last pieces of former rural land to be sub-divided for housing in Surrey Hills.The land between it and South Surrey Park was sub-divided post WW1, hence the naming of the streets after sites of WW1 battles.A black and white reproduction of an aerial photo of the area near the corner of Warragul and Riversdale Roads looking west towards the city.
