A trench art souvenir of HMAS Australia. This brass ashtray is apparently made from part of a propellor. The HMAS Australia was a heavy cruiser class fighting ship which was commissioned by the RAN on the 24th September, 1928 and de-commissioned on the 31st August, 1954.The ashtray has the following stamped inscription across the top rim. Regarding P Sexton. There is a Patrick Sexton listed in the 59th Batt roll No 3243a. The trench art was in the collection of James Worland Mills No 3441 59th Batt AIF. Refer 169P, 166.3, 167.6. Embarked for England 23.11.1916, embark for France 13.8.1917, hospital 1.10.1917 with Synovitis of the Knee, return to unit 6.10.1917, hospital 8.2.1918 with Gastritis and Trench Fever. Returned to Australia 24.8.1918 classed with Gastritis, Trench Fever and Debility, discharged from the AIF 28.2.1919. "This sculpture was inspired by the figures carved from the hillsides of the chalk downs in Britain. I wanted to produce a work that would become part of the landscape and was originally derived from the landscape. It is a white-faced heron which is a native water bird commonly found along the Merri Creek.
