Document (item) - Invitation, City of Kew, Official Opening of the Glass Creek Kindergarten, 1956
The Municipality of Kew (1860-1863), the Borough of Kew (1863-1910), the Town of Kew (1910-1921) and the City of Kew (1921-1994) were local government instrumentalities in the State of Victoria. In 1994, the City of Kew was amalgamated, together with the former Cities of Camberwell and Hawthorn, into the new City of Boroondara (1994- ). Like other local government entities of the period, Kew was administered by town clerks. The two notable town clerks in Kew's history were H. H. (Henry Hirst) Harrison (1868-1955) and W. D. (William Dickie) Birrell (1899-1974). Harrison was appointed to the position in 1901 and retired in 1938 after 37 years. Birrell, appointed Acting Town Clerk in 1921, became Town Clerk in 1938, following Harrison's retirement. He continued in this role until his retirement in 1966.This card is part of an historically significant civic collection, containing hundreds of separate invitations, documents, greeting cards, programmes and tickets issued and/or collected by successive town clerks. Items in the collection illuminate the political, social and cultural history of the district. As a continuous record, ranging across most decades of the Twentieth Century, they reveal changing tastes in design, values and relationships in the history of local government in Victoria.CITY OF KEW / THE MAYOR, CR W A COMEADOW OBE JP / EXTENDS TO YOU A CORDIAL INVITATION TO BE PRESENT AT / OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE GLASS CREEK KINDERGARTEN / BY THE HON E P CAMERON MLC MINISTER OF HEALTH / WEDNEDSDAY 24TH OCTOBER, 1956, AT 2.45 P.M.civic invitations -- kew (vic), glass creek kindergarten -

Painting, Isabel Huntington, 'Sunflower' by Isabel Huntington, c1956
Isabel HUNTINGTON (1905 - 04 December 1971) Isabel McCausland was educated at Ballarat and married Robert Keith Huntington in 1931, and which time Isabel was living in the Melbourne suburb of Preston. Isabel Huntington was a painter, craft officer and craft worker. She studied at Ballarat High School, Ballarat Technical Art School (a division of the School of Mines) and RMIT, and was a member of the Victorian Artists' Society and the Contemporary Art Society. In 1945 she was appointed Director of Handcrafts for the Victorian Division of the Red Cross Society. Isabel Huntington had previously held the position of Supervisor of Handcrafts at Heidelberg Military Hospital for three and a half years. She was a member or the Arts and Crafts Society. Isabel Huntington had five 'one-man" shows, three in Melbourne, one in Ballarat and one in Hamilton, Victoria. The critics of the day described Isobel Huntington's work as Post Impressionist and Expressionist. 'Her enjoyment of the use of colour and her sense of vitality is obvious in her most original conception of the relationship of art to flowers.' Ursula Hoff judged the 1965 Albury awards for watercolour, and religious paintings in oils, awarding the prize to Isabel Huntington. In the same year Isabel Huntington travelled to Europe. In Ballarat's Crouch Prize Isabel Huntington was commended three times. After returning from overseas she taught at Rosanna High School, Victoria. Isabel Huntington lived at Montmorency, Victoria, and was there at the time of her death. Her studio was located at 10 Nokes Court, Montmorency, 3094. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007 in 1971.Framed painting of a sunflower. Melbourne Legacy
Document, The "Junior Legacy, Melbourne" Special Appeal, 1956
A list of donors who had contributed to Legacy's special appeal for funds in 1956. It was the first time Legacy had asked the public for donations because of the needs to refurbish their new premises. It was in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy which appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). Some notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. The call for public donations was partially due to the purchase of the Dureau building and the need to modify the building for Legacy's needs. The documents from this folder have been added in seperate records (see 01262 to 01281). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1950s.The documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1950s. Legatee Cyril Smith and others were detailing their experiences and knowledge for the future. Two foolscap pages listing donations to Legacy in 1956.fundraising, donations -

Melbourne Legacy
Letter, Pensions and domestic allowance, 1956
A letter to Legatee Cyril Smith from the Repatriation Commission, it mentions a second page which is not found so we don't know the sender. It was a record of changes to the pensions for widows and their children over the years between 1943 and 1956. It mentions domestic allowance and allowances for each child, also for orphans. It seems Cyril had been requesting information for his records. It was in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy which appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). Some of the notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy.
