A nylon wool mixture sleeveless singlet with drawstring at neck that was possibly worn by George Reed when a patient at Heatherton Sanitarium c1950 "1909 'Consumption' or Tuberculosis was an infectious, debilitating disease. The main treatment of this ailment was a long period of rest, fresh air, sunshine and good food, so what better place to build a ‘Sanatorium’ than in the rural area they called Heatherton and affiliate it with the Melbourne Benevolent Asylum. After World War II c1947, the Commonwealth Government Health Department took over the Heatherton Hospital to deal with tuberculosis when it became a major problem in Australia. This was during the time when the Government conducted X-Ray surveys on a state by state basis. It was compulsory at that time for everyone to have a chest X-Ray. Bed Jacket
The bed jacket, a woman's garment, is a waist-length robe worn to cover the chest, shoulders and arms while sitting up in bed. Its short length and cape-like cut allowed it to be put on (or removed) while in bed. Often made of sheer or lacy fabrics and displaying very feminine trimmings and details, it was often used more for seduction, rather than warmth or modesty. It was popularized in 1930s Hollywood films featuring glamorous settings and glamorous stars lounging languorously in their silken bedrooms. Ostrich feather tips, swan’s down, pleated tulle and shirred lace were just a few examples of the extravagant materials that could be used in creating these confections. These garments are currently very popular with people who have been hospitalized or recommended bed rest. Book, Bedford McNeill, Mining and General Telegraphic Code, 1899
McNeill's Code was arranged to meet the requirements of mining, metallurgical and civil engineers, Directors of Mining, Smelting companies; bankers; stock and share brokers, solicitors, accountants, financiers and general merchants. Bedford McNeil )Assoc. M. Inst. C.E.) was an Associate of the Royal School of Mines; Member of the Institution of Mining and metallurgy and of the north of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers; and a Fellow of the Geological Society. "OBITUARY - Mr. Bedford McNeill IT is with regret that we announce the death on September 18, due to cerebral hemorrhage, of Mr. Bedford McNeill, the well-known mining engineer, at fifty-five years of age. Apart from his high reputation as a mining engineer, Mr. McNeill’s name was almost a household word in connection with the telegraphic code compiled by him, which was issued originally in 1893, and in an enlarged and revised form in 1908. This code is employed almost without exception by mining-companies and engineers, to whose use it was specially dedicated, and other business men have found it extremely practical for cable communications. Midwifery box used by midwife Mary Howlett, c. 1866 - 1920
Mary Howlett (1840-1922) began practising as a country midwife in 1866 in the western district of Victoria. She qualified as a 'ladies monthly nurse' in 1887 and continued to practise as a nurse and midwife until 1920.She began her six months training at the Melbourne Lying-In Hospital. She was known by many as 'Auntie', and her career spanned more than 50 years. Mrs Howlett's midwifery box and contents were given to Dr Frank Forster, and he donated them to the museum collection in 1993. The contents of this box are consistent with use by a midwife, but such a box would have been cumbersome and heavy to carry around. It is possible that Mary Howlett would also have had a bag for her midwifery requirements. This midwifery box is highly significant as it includes close to the original contents of one midwife's 'professional kit' up to 1920. The contents reveal something of the professional practice of a midwife in country Victoria at that time.A wooden box with hinged lift-up lid, one drawer, and an inner wooden tray. Rests at each side inside box indicate another tray may have originally sat across the top. Pasted inside the lid is a product list from Robert McDonald (chemist and druggist). There are locks for both the main chest section and the drawer. A circular section is cut out of the bottom of the drawer. The contents of the box include, enema syringe, a red rubber douche, glass breast pump, nipple shields, a thermometer in travel case. Also includes cotton bandages, a tooth extractor, and fetal stethoscope.midwifery -

Clothing - Black moiré silk faille day dress, 1880
This dress belonged to Mary Ann Henty [nee Lawrence] (1821-81), the wife of Francis Henty (1815-89). Her husband, Francis Henty, was the youngest son of Thomas Henty, who with his family, their retainers and property moved to the Australian colonies between 1829 and 1832. In 1834, Francis’ older brother, Edward, sailed from Launceston in Van Diemen’s Land to what was to become Portland in the western part of Port Phillip District [Victoria]. Francis, together with the first flock of Merino sheep [in Victoria], followed some months later. The first and second generations of the Henty family established vast pastoral properties in the Western part of the Port Phillip District. Francis Henty managed ‘Merino Downs’ near Casterton, while also living in his retirement at ‘Field Place' in Kew. The Henty Collection of nineteenth and twentieth century clothing, including outerwear and underwear, was collected, stored and exhibited over time by female family members descended from Francis and Mary Ann Henty. During the twentieth century, items from the collection were modelled in two fashion parades by various descendants [1937, 1959]. The items in the collection are historically and aesthetically significant, with provenance provided by oral and written tradition within or held by the family. A number of the items in the collection are very rare survivors, and provide researchers with the evidence needed to reconstruct the lives of notable women in the Port Phillip District [later Victoria] during the nineteenth and early twentieth century.A two-piece, moiré silk faille day dress, owned and worn by Mary Ann Henty, aged 59, while resident at Field Place, Kew. The fitted and panelled bodice on the day dress features wide velvet ribbon, hand sewn to form ‘V’ detailing at front and back. The front bodice hook and eye closure is decorated with handmade velvet covered buttons. The high round neckline is trimmed with pleated ivory fine tulle lace. The wide long sleeves of the bodice are also trimmed with velvet ribbon and buttons forming exquisite cuff detailing. The full length skirt and train are tucked into a fitted waistline band. Equipment - Hand operated divers air pump
Standard diving dress (also known as hard-hat or copper hat equipment, or heavy gear) is a type of diving suit that was formerly used for all relatively deep underwater work that required more than breath-hold duration, which included marine salvage, civil engineering, pearl shell diving and other commercial diving work, and similar naval diving applications. Standard diving dress has largely been superseded by lighter and more comfortable equipment. Standard diving dress consists of a diving helmet made from copper and brass or bronze, an air hose from a surface-supplied manually operated PUMP or low pressure breathing air compressor, a waterproofed canvas suit, a diving knife, and weights to counteract buoyancy, generally on the chest, back and shoes. Later models were equipped with a diver's telephone for voice communications with the surface.Hand operated divers air pump for one or two diversdiving, air pump -

Photograph - Photo, Legatee Doc Sarjeant and a Junior, 1954
A photo of Legatee Doc Sargeant with a stethoscope looking at a junior legatee in 1954. The girl's badge says her name is Robyn Leggo. Melbourne Legacy began proving medical and dental care for junior legatees in the 1930s. At first Legatees who were professional doctors and dentists provided care free of charge. When size of the demand was realised Melbourne Legacy opened a dental clinic. For many years the dental clinic was run out of Legacy House in Swanston St. The photo appeared in the July 1954 edition of the Legacy Newsletter with the caption "Legatee Doc Sargeant examines a Junior." Photograph, Sir Edward Dunlop, 1986
A large poster of Sir Ernest Edward "Weary" Dunlop, AC, CMG, OBE (12 July 1907 – 2 July 1993). He was an Australian surgeon who was renowned for his leadership while being held prisoner by the Japanese during World War II. He was involved with Legacy on numerous occasions - including a dinner with Clive James in 1993.When he passed away in 1993 there was a tribute in the Answer. Unknown when the photo was taken - perhaps the 1940s (Note; the colour patch on the upper arm.) Photo has possibly been taken on Anzac Day. (Note; Anzac Day badge on left lapel of battle dress jacket and sprig of rosemary rising above decorations pinned on right chest of battle dress jacket.). The Technical Bookshop were tenants in the shopfront premises of Legacy House for many years. This could have been advertising material for Weary Dunlops War Diaries which were published by Penguin in 1986, presumably the poster was given to Legacy in December 1990 when no longer required in store. This shows the Technical Bookshop had a good relationship with Legacy and understood the connection between Weary Dunlop and Legacy.Coloured photo of Sir (Ernest) Edward "Weary" Dunlop that was used to promote a book about him. Reverse side, a Christmas message to Legacy, written in blue texta. Penguin publishing company logo appears in the bottom left hand corner.Reverse side, handwritten in blue texta "To Legacy. Merry Christmas love Technical Bookshop xxx. 1990"dunlop, portrait
