The Chief Censor was David Ferguson. He was requested by the Council to develop training programs for future Fellows of the College. Harold Greenwood Thomas was one of a group of students who founded the Safety Institute of Australia (SIA). They all had attended the first Industrial Safety and Accident Prevention Course conducted by Melbourne Technical College in 1948. Due to his long service to safety and prevention there is the Harold Greenwood Thomas Lifetime Achievement Award. This is the most prestigious award by the Institute and may be issued to a person who has demonstrated a combination of long term outstanding and influential contribution to the profession in a specific or generalist area of Occupational Health and Safety and Work Health and Safety, where there work has made a major impact on outcomes in Australian workplaces. The Award will be issued once annually, but the board retains the right not to award in any given year, or in special circumstances more than once in a year. It Award is for an individual. In 1984 the Health and Safety Unit conducted its first "short course". This was a three month course in industrial safety. The first group was for Australian International Development Assistance Bureau (AIDAB) Factory Inspectors. The group was made up of twelve chief inspectors and deputy inspectors from India and one inspector from Fiji. AIDAB provided the funding for those who participated - course, accommodation and fares. A project titled "Reducing Back Injuries and Energy Costs of Shearing Through the Development of Practical Modifications to Shed Layout" was funded by Worksafe Australia. The budget was $101,170. VIOSH Australia collaborated with the School of Human Movement and Sports Science to look for ways to reduce muscle injuries associated with shearing. The study set up a number of focus groups in the Ballarat area, New South Wales and Western Australia to gather different inputs and perspectives on causes of injuries. Groups represented were shearers, doctors, farmers and shearing shed designers. Shed design was a principal factor with the emphasis on minimising body twisting associated with catching and releasing sheep, removal of floor obstructions along path between pen and release, battens oriented along direction of drag and slope in pens. Juli HAAS (26 April 1952- 02 March 2014) Born Melbourne Juli HAAS (1952-2013) Born Melbourne Juli Haas mainly produced watercolours, artist’s books and limited edition prints using the printmaking technique of Drypoint. She often explores the lives of everyday people with her work often portraying the darker side of human nature in an interior world filled with fantasy and absurdity. Themes throughout her work incorporate the use of childhood memory, place and a sense of personal history. Inspiration is derived from observing her own environment, which is then developed into a portrayal of the absurdity and drama of everyday human situations. Haas applies layers of intense and vibrant colour, which also serves to reinforce the narrative element that runs through the work. The psychological drama that informs this narrative exposes the darker side of life, expressing elements of anger, violence and isolation. The Council of the Institute includes members of the Gippsland community who are prominent in industry, commerce, education and the professions, the Director of the institute, the representative of the academic staff, of general staff, of students and of the Convocation of the Institute. In 1972 the Institute occupied the first of its permanent buildings on a large campus in rural surroundings near the township of Churchill, ten kilometres south of Morwell and one hundred and sixty kilometres east of Melbourne. Engineering laboratories are temporarily located in buildings on the site of the Yallourn College of TAFE at Newborough and they will be consolidated on the Churchill campus by the end on 1985. In 1974 new buildings were completed under a self-help program to house the School of Visual Arts. A building complex to provide the first stages of the permanent library and the Union, and accommodation for the School of Business and Social Sciences was completed in 1976. An Education building, an Applied Science building and student residential buildings for 108 student places were completed at the beginning on 1976. The Binishell, a multi-purpose facility was completed in 1980. On its establishment, the Institute assumed responsibility for the diploma courses which were previously offered by the Yallourn Technical College. These were diploma in Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering, Applied Chemistry, and Business, all of which were recognised by the appropriate professional bodies. John SCURRY (26 August 1947- ) Born Melbourne, Victoria John Scurry studied at the Prahran College of Advanced Education, graduating with a Diploma of Art and Design in 1969. In 1971 he gained a Trained Tertiary Certificate from Hawthorn Institute of Education. From 1973 to 1976 Scurry was a Full time Senior Tutor in the Printmaking Department of the Preston Institute of Technology, becoming Acting Head of the Department in 1976. Working as a Lecturer in the Drawing Department of Prahran College of Advanced Education he then became a Lecturer in Printmaking from 1977 to 1978. In 1979 he began teaching as Full time Lecturer in Printmaking at the Victoria College of the Arts, where in the following years he was Senior Lecturer in Charge of Printmaking in the Faculty of Art and Design (1982-1991, Head of Printmaking School of Art (1991-2003) and Senior Lecturer (2003-2007) before retiring to focus his time on his own work. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. Photographs were posted to Ballarat College of Advanced Education from Melbourne. At this time VIOSH was in the planning stage and it was two years later that the first Intake of students started. People known in the photographs are: E.J. Barker, E.J. Tippett, Mr Jim Reid and Barry Jones. E.J. Barker (Jack) was the Principal of SMB from 1964-1976. He then became the Foundation Director of Ballarat Institute/College of Advanced Education from 1976-1987. The Library Building at Mount Helen Campus if named after him. E.J. Tippett was a member of SMB Council from 1934-1960. He was President of the Council from 1940-1960. He was a member of the Interim Council established to plan the development of the Victorian Institute of Colleges. He then became a member of the Council of the Victorian Institute of Colleges. The Library Building at SMB is named after him. In 1975 he was recognised by the State Government and awarded an MBE. Hon Barry Jones, Member of State Government from 1972 to 1977. He then entered Federal Parliament and was a member from 1977 to 1998. During his time he was Minister for Industry, Science and Technology from1983 to 1990. Ann Tippett - wife of E.J. Tippett. MALCOLM BOYD Born Gippsland, Victoria In 1977 Malcolm Boyd graduated with a Diploma of Visual Arts from the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education. It was at this time that he presented this work to the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection. Over thirty years later he still has a passion for ceramic history and design. Boyd operated the Black Cockatoo Pottery from around 1980-1995, starting in Essendon, then moving to Ascot Vale, Stratford, Bairnsdale and finally Fernbank in Gippsland. His handbuilt stoneware pots and clay sculptures are wood fired at his East Gippsland studio. He often uses ochre coloured dam banks on his property at Fernbank. The local clays are crushed, screened and blended with a white stoneware body to produce a number of shades and textures. All Malcolm Boyd's pot's are hand built using moulding, coiling, slabbing, and modelling techniques, and are high temperature fired (1300C) to allow some of the very ancient oriental glazes to mature. All works spend at least 20 hours in the wood fired kilns. This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection which was amassed with funds raised by Jan Feder's student peers at the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design in the mid 1980s after Jan Feder passed away. Although many of the works are donated the intention of the collection was to purchase from visiting lecturers who became leading ceramic artists around the world, as well as from many of the staff who taught at the Churchill Campus. This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection. Jan Feder was an alumna of the Gippsland Campus who studied ceramics on the campus. She passed away in the mid 1980s. Her student peers raised funds to buy ceramic works in her memory.
