Muriel Slater, Australian Army Nursing Service Appointment, 22nd May 1917 - Record of Service 24.4.1917 to 16.8.1919. Muriel Matthew Slater started her nursing training the day of her 21st birthday. When she became a fully trained nurse she joined the army nursing service and sailed for India on the Khiva. She was stationed ar Dealali Internment Camp - mostly German and Turkish POW's. After 2 years in India she was sent via Egypt to the UK and spent some months between Harefield Hospital in London and others in the UK. She sailed home on the Karragolia where she met Lt T H. Eugene Carl Sandner was born in Bendigo in 1906. He was associated with the Bendigo and Northern District Base Hospital from 1935 – 1983 including Acting City Medical Officer in 1942 and serving as Medical Officer for 48 years. He was President of the Committee of Management from 1979- 1981. Dr Sandner retired from full time practice as a surgeon in 1971 and was first elected to council in August 1976 and elected Mayor of Bendigo for the 1978 – 79 term. This Anaesthetic Mask 'Schimmelbusch' mask was used to deliver chloroform or ether as an anaesthetic. When this mask was in use most doctors would have delivered the anaesthetic themselves. During the 1940s and 1950s, some nurses may have played an active role in the delivery of anaesthetics, particularly in remote areas and during wartime or doctor shortages. This medical / hospital equipment was the latest available in the 1950s when the Tawonga District General Hospital was built specifically for the increase in population due to the Kiewa Hydro Scheme.Historical: Shows the development of scientific hospital equipment. To add cloth (gauze or muslin) with anaesthetic (chloroform or ether) open the mask and place the cloth onto the frame. It clipped on and the fluid then dripped onto the cloth. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989.NDSN Trained Nurse Certification booklet. This black and white photograph is taken in the Education Department at Western General Hospital. Sr, Nan Deakin is a Nurse Educator with RDNS and is giving a lecture about District Nursing to hospital student nurses before each nurse goes to RDNS Centres. This lecture prepares each nurse before she goes out for a week with an RDNS Sister to visit patients who are receiving nursing care in their home.During their training, Student nurses from several hospitals either attended the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), Education Department, or, a RDNS Nurse Educator travelled to the appropriate hospital’s Education Department to educate the Trainees on District nursing through the RDNS Community Nursing Program. Following the lectures Students went to a RDNS Centre and each student accompanied a Trained nurse (Sister) for a week observing and gaining knowledge of all facets of nursing care in the home. This gave them an insight into the home conditions and situations patients faced after discharge from hospital. This window was removed from the Marcus Saltau House building in the Warrnambool and District Base Hospital when the building was demolished in 2009. Marcus Saltau House was erected in 1938 to provide for intermediate, private and midwifery patients. The builder was Ernie Harris of Warrnambool. The building commemorated the work of Marcus Saltau who was on the Warrnambool Hospital committee for over forty years and the President of that committee for thirty years. Marcus Saltau (1869-1945) was a Warrnambool produce merchant and politician involved in many Warrnambool ventures, including the establishment and development of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill and the Nestles Milk Factory at Dennington. The Jean Buick Saltau Maternity Ward at the Warrnambool Hospital was established by Marcus Saltau in 1928 in memory of his first wife. The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. Edgar Francis ‘Ted’ McKoy. Born on 21 January 1881 at Wodonga to parents Alexander Joseph McKoy and Emma House. He was the 11th child born to Joseph and Emma. During 1858, Joseph and Emma travelled from Parks Camp in New South Wales to Wodonga. Joseph’s brother James was already living on the border. They settled at Wodonga and raised a very large family. Ted grew up on the horse stud of his parents – the land is where the Wodonga Caravan Park and Wodonga TAFE are now located. Several streets in the area are named after Joseph’s horses. Ted developed his considerable skills with horses with the help of his father who was a renowned breeder. Ted married Laura Annie McVean at 'The Vicarage' Wodonga on 1 Mar 1905. They had four children - Harold Glenn, Vera, Beatrice Mabel and Gladys. They settled at Ted’s stud Moorefield Park. Ted was a well-known horse breeder in his own right and won many prizes at agricultural shows. He had trotting horses, show hacks and Clydesdales. He worked for many years as the Wodonga Pound Keeper and was well-known throughout the district. Ted died on 7 Jul 1947 at Albury District Hospital and was buried at the Wodonga Cemetery.This item is unique and has well documented provenance and a known owner. This image appears to show nurses at what is now the Mayday Hills Mental Asylum arriving for work in approximately 1900. These individuals are part of a long history of nursing in Beechworth. Three medical or social welfare facilities opened in the mid-1800s as part of a push by the township to become a regional centre for Government services. These were the Ovens District Hospital (opened in 1857), the Ovens Benevolent Asylum (opened in 1863), and the Beechworth Mental Hospital (opened in 1867 and renamed Mayday Hills Hospital at Centenary celebrations in 1967). It was recognised that the unsettled living conditions, poverty and relative isolation of the Goldfields environment could produce 'mental disturbances' which required local treatment facilities as services in Melbourne were too far away. Carole Woods' publication 'A Titan's Field' describes activities undertaken by patients at Beechworth Mental Hospital as including monthly balls and occasional concerts as well as work to make the facility self-supporting such as farm work and making clothes. She mentions a report in 1870 that the approximately 300 patients were clean and neat with 'no-one in restraint or seclusion' but that by 1905 the organisation had 623 patients which placed strain on building infrastructure such as heating and water supplies, leading to high turnover of nurses and other issues. A program of building works to extend and improve facilities followed over subsequent decades. Lantern slides, sometimes called 'magic lantern' slides, are glass plates on which an image has been secured for the purpose of projection. Glass slides were etched or hand-painted for this purpose from the Eighteenth Century but the process became more popular and accessible to the public with the development of photographic-emulsion slides used with a 'Magic Lantern' device in the mid-Nineteenth Century. Photographic lantern slides comprise a double-negative emulsion layer (forming a positive image) between thin glass plates that are bound together. A number of processes existed to form and bind the emulsion layer to the base plate, including the albumen, wet plate collodion, gelatine dry plate and Woodburytype techniques. Lantern slides and magic lantern technologies are seen as foundational precursors to the development of modern photography and film-making techniques This glass slide is significant because it provides insight into Beechworth's social and medical amenities in the early Twentieth Century, around the time of Australia's Federation into one nation. This image appears to show nurses at what is now the Mayday Hills Mental Asylum in approximately 1900. These individuals are part of a long history of nursing in Beechworth. Three medical or social welfare facilities opened in the mid-1800s as part of a push by the township to become a regional centre for Government services. These were the Ovens District Hospital (opened in 1857), the Ovens Benevolent Asylum (opened in 1863), and the Beechworth Mental Hospital (opened in 1867 and renamed Mayday Hills Hospital at Centenary celebrations in 1967). It was recognised that the unsettled living conditions, poverty and relative isolation of the Goldfields environment could produce 'mental disturbances' which required local treatment facilities as services in Melbourne were too far away. Carole Woods' publication 'A Titan's Field' describes activities undertaken by patients at Beechworth Mental Hospital as including monthly balls and occasional concerts as well as work to make the facility self-supporting such as farm work and making clothes. She mentions a report in 1870 that the approximately 300 patients were clean and neat with 'no-one in restraint or seclusion' but that by 1905 the organisation had 623 patients which placed strain on building infrastructure such as heating and water supplies, leading to high turnover of nurses and other issues. A program of building works to extend and improve facilities followed over subsequent decades. Lantern slides, sometimes called 'magic lantern' slides, are glass plates on which an image has been secured for the purpose of projection. Glass slides were etched or hand-painted for this purpose from the Eighteenth Century but the process became more popular and accessible to the public with the development of photographic-emulsion slides used with a 'Magic Lantern' device in the mid-Nineteenth Century. Photographic lantern slides comprise a double-negative emulsion layer (forming a positive image) between thin glass plates that are bound together. A number of processes existed to form and bind the emulsion layer to the base plate, including the albumen, wet plate collodion, gelatine dry plate and Woodburytype techniques. Lantern slides and magic lantern technologies are seen as foundational precursors to the development of modern photography and film-making techniques.This glass slide is significant because it provides insight into Beechworth's social and medical amenities in the early Twentieth Century, around the time of Australia's Federation into one nation. K2,3 and4 are of the Kiewa River and two of the bridges spanning the river along the valley. K3 and K4 would have been taken in the 1880's and show the type of trees and plant growth along the river prior to land clearing for farming. K5 is of the Running Creek Cricket Team and therefore there was sufficient population in the area to form and maintain a team as well as have other teams in the relatively near vicinity to provide competition. Note the horse drawn cart which provided transport. Date taken is unknown but possibly c 1910. The Mt. Buffalo Chalet was built in 1910 by the Victorian Government. It was Australia's first ski resort and has served generations of skiiers, hikers and families over the years. It was built for 3195 pounds and has had stories and wings added since and is the largest timber building in Australia. B4 is the earliest photo in this group as the garden is in early stages of development - the other photos show the growth of the shrubs and would be taken about c 1920. Note the cars and motor bikes. It closed in 2006. The other photos are of general interest only but interesting to see that there were donkey's grazing. There is no information as to their purpose on Mt. Buffalo. Four different Kiewa Valley families are represented in the photographs. Their descendants still live in the Valley and carry on the traditions of beef and dairy farming. Of particular interest is the photo of Miss Marjorie Clemence, the first School Teacher of Upper Gundowring School. Gundowring pastoral run was taken up in 1838 and occupied by framers in the 1860's. The area was known as Gundowring and Upper Gundowring. The Gundowring School was opened in 1871 and most likely the Upper Gundowring school would be built at the same time. It was School No. 2733 and situated in Boyd Road. It closed in 1953 when the Kiewa Consolidated School opened. The newspaper page describes the activities in which the local community of Kergunyah were in engaged in that period - Red Cross, Fire Brigade, cattle round up and some of the identities involved. The article photocopied from the Yackandandah times states that he (Norman Coad) "was sent to the Ovens District Hospital, Beechworth for treatment" which would mean that this was the closest hospital to the Kiewa Valley for emergencies in 1912.The Kiewa Valley photographs are of social significance showing two of the early bridges allowing the community easy access to both sides of the river and also the tree and plant growth before land clearing for farming. The photos of Mt. Buffalo Chalet have social, architectural and historical significance. the Chalet has been used by skiers, bush walkers and day trippers since its completion in 1910 and its closure in 2006. It is listed in the Victorian Heritage Register. The family photographs are of social and historical significance as they are of early farming families in the Kiewa Valley and also depict the dress, of both men and women) in the late 1880's. The write up in the Weekly Times has social significance as it depicts the social and farming activities and photos of the local residents from around that area. The article from the Yackandandah Times is of a personal nature with concern for the individual involved. A letter from Mrs Alwyn Drysdale on behalf of her husband Bob, to accompany photos of pine trees planted by him over time in various towns and schools. The trees had been organised by Legacy as part of their Lone Pine programme and he wanted to provide an update of their growth. Since the early 1970s Legacy had a commemorative programme of providing trees grown from seeds from Gallipoli to various towns throughout Australia. See the Lone Pine brochure at 00593. These trees were planted in the early 2000s. Melbourne Legacy's Commemoration Committee was responsible for the collection, propagation and dedication of Lone Pines from the 24th Battalion tree at the Shrine of Remembrance. On the 14th September 1989 further seedlings were collected with the hope to raise 1,000 trees from the seeds. Thus, Legacy is helping to keep the memory of the Gallipoli "Lone Pine" alive - its spirit living on today. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin on the death of Legatee Cyril Terence Charles Kirby, a long serving Legatee. The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. The article includes an overview of his war service with the British as an 'Old Contemptible' in World War 1. Also with the Docks and Movement Control in Melbourne during World War 2. He met his wife Priscilla Wardle during World War 1 and moved to Ballarat to marry her. Priscilla was an Australian nurse serving with the QAIMNS and part of her diary is in this collection, and more is held with Ballarat and District Bast Hospital Nurses League also on Victorian Collections. He joined Legacy in Ballarat in 1929 and transferred to Melbourne Legacy in 1935. Even when his health caused him to reduce his commitments to the Reserve list he still found time to attend Legacy and spent many hours each month doing clerical work and fund raising. "Keeping everyone amused with his inexhaustible supply of 'little stories', and in a word, doing a thoroughly good Legacy job." The account of his life was written by Legatee Brian Armstrong (initials JHBA) and has a very affectionate tone.
