Equipment - Object, Braille eraser
Designed to create an impression on paper, the stylus allows users to create Braille through the applied use of pressure that creates a depression on one size of the paper and a raised dot on the alternative side. However sometimes mistakes were made and rather than re-emboss the whole page, a Braille eraser was sometimes used by flattening out indentation on card, one dot at a time.1 wooden piece with blunted tipbraille equipment, association for the blind -

The Beechworth Burke Museum
Ceremonial object - Message Sticks, Dja Dja Wurrung
These Message Sticks acknowledge the return of Dja Dja Wurrung Cultural material held by the Burke Museum. The Burke Museum is the current custodian of a significant collection of First Peoples’ cultural material from across South-Eastern Australia. These objects were sold to the Museum by Reynold Everly Johns in 1868. We recognise the harm caused by dispossession of cultural material, and by any inappropriate display and interpretation of this collection over the past 150 years. The Burke Museum is continuing to build relationships and collaborate with traditional owners, Aboriginal communities and the museum sector to ensure culturally appropriate outcomes for the collection, including repatriation of objects to communities of origin. Message sticks are a form of communication between Aboriginal nations, clans and language groups even within clans. Traditional message sticks were made and crafted from wood and were generally small and easy to carry (between 10 and 20 cm). They were carved, incised and painted with symbols and decorative designs conveying messages and information. Some were prepared hastily, like you might create a note left on a friend’s desk or a quick text message; others were prepared with more time to make the markings neat and ornate. There were always marks that were distinctive to the particular group or nation sending the message and often marks identifying the relationship of the carrier to their group. This way it could be identified and authenticated by neighboring groups and by translators when the message stick was taken long distances. Two solid cylindrical shaped pieces of wood bound together with black, red and yellow string. Each stick has etchings with angular lines and dots. dja dja wurrung, message sticks, burke museum, beechworth, beechworth museum, repatriation, reynold everly johns -

Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Painting, Lisa Carman, S.O.S, 2019
The painting explores the mental health issues often faced by those who work at sea as a result of loneliness, isolation and illness, amongst other things. This seafarer’s face is made up of thousands of SOS Morse code symbols: dot, dot, dot dash, dash, dash dot, dot, dot. Morse code was used to signal to land that a ship or crew was in trouble. This seafarer is in trouble- his face says it all and speaks volumes. Mental health issues are often hidden when we look from afar but when we take the time to look closer and listen, the signs are often there.Lisa Carman entered this painting to the Maritime Art Prize 2019 and donated the artwork after the exhibition.Naive, Marine artLisa Carman, MTSV Collection Squared shape painting depicting a portrait in blue and dark tones of a sailor with a beard wearing a beanie. Equipment - Morse key, Postmaster-General's Department, circa 1920
A telegraph or Morse key, sends a series of electrical signals down a telegraph line or via radio frequencies; the signals are interpreted as Morse code, a binary form of language constructed of 'dots and dashes', combinations of which correspond to letters of the alphabet. The motion of the key acts to complete an electrical circuit between the sender and receiver, producing a short pulse 'dot' or longer 'dash,' the space between the code indicates a broken current or wave.Device used to transmit telegraphic messages in Morse code through the manipulation of electric signals. The metal 'key' sits in a central bracket on which it moves up and down aided by a spring, controlled by an operator pushing the black Bakelite knob on the protruding end of the device. The motion presses the key onto a circular metal disc, completing the circuit and sending an electrical pulse to the receiver. The apparatus is secured to a wooden base with wires attached to the terminals; a cut out section of the base suggests wires may have entered through this area, attaching to a battery.Printed ink on base: "PMG"telegraph, telegraphist, morse code, mechanisation -

This timepiece uses Braille to indicate the position of the numbers, which the wearer could then use to orient themselves and tell the time from the metal hands. The 12 position is indicated by three dots, with the 3,6,9 positions by two dots. Apothecaries Weight 2 Drams
Apothecaries weights were historically used by physicians and pharmacists for the assembling of medical recipes (20 grains = 1 scruple; 3 scruples = 1 dram (drachm); 8 drams = 1 troy ounce). The coin weights were used up until about the 1940s. This coin is a stater, a 2 gram coin. The symbol for the dram was the number 3 and the letters ‘ij’ are equivalent to the Roman numerals 11 meaning two. The coin has the date March 16, 1847, the date of the registration of the coin. This coin has no known local provenance but a two-dram coin such as this would have been used by doctors and pharmacists in the Warrnambool district from the 1840s to the 1940s approximately. It will be useful for display. This brass circular weight with raised engraving has an annulus of very small dots close to the rim on the obverse and reverse sides.
