This item was supplied by William Ferguson, a jeweller, watchmaker and optician in Timor Street, Warrnambool in the early part of the 20th century. He was Mayor of Warrnambool in 1901-2. It is not known to whom the spectacles belonged. This item has no specific provenance but it is of importance as an example of the type of object supplied by William Ferguson, a prominent businessman in Warrnambool in the early 1900s. This is a spectacles case made of stiffened leather with a leather handle at the top that slides back to allow the case to be opened. The top of the case lifts up to allow the spectacles to be removed. The case has the name of the supplier (W.Ferguson) stamped in gold print on the side. This item is a boot remover used by mounted military personnel, probably by a member of the Mounted Rifles or Light Horsemen units early in the 20th century. Similar boot removers, also known as boot jacks or boot pulls, were used by anyone wearing riding boots and would be still in use today. This item is of some interest as it shows the type of boot remover used by military mounted soldiers and other horsemen in days past. This is a wooden object with a top with two side handles. Attached to the top are two sticks or poles which are splayed at the end. Attached to the ends of the poles by screws is a piece of wood with an oval or spoon shape cut out at the end. An advertisement for the shop was published on February 9, 1922 in the Ubyssey News (issued Weekly by the Publications Board of the University of British Columbia. It reads: 'We carry one of the largest lines of Indian Burnt Leather Goods, Moccasins and Baskets in the city; also Beads, Purses and Hand Bags; View Books, Post Cards and Novelties of all kinds. Your inspection invited, 524 Granville St. Vancouver B.C'. History of shopping bags: Before the late 1800s, shopping bags didn’t exist. Shoppers would either carry their goods home in baskets, or have the merchant deliver them to people's homes, until 1852 when Francis Wolle, a schoolteacher in Pennsylvania, invented a machine to produce paper shopping bags. This invention would allow customers to carry items home in disposable paper bags. Soon after, owners of department stores and retailers began to realise that paper shopping bags could be used to help market their brands, and as such custom shopping bags with printed logos became common place. Carrying a shopping bag from certain shops became a type of status symbol for consumers, providing evidence that one was well-off, had good taste, or both. According to the handwritten information accompanying the item this umbrella has an ivory handle carved by native Africans on a Christian mission station in South Africa. The umbrella was sent to Mrs Donohue of Warrnambool who was an active member of the Church of England in Warrnambool early in the 20th century. No further information has been found on Mrs Donohue. This umbrella is of interest because of its carved ivory handle and because it was sent from South Africa to an Anglican Church adherent in Warrnambool early in the 20th century. This is a black silk umbrella with a carved ivory handle. The carving includes representations of leaves and seeds. Some of the silk is torn, some has disintegrated and some of it is detached from the metal spokes. The umbrella top is wooden. This jardinière is one of many 19th and early 20th century items donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by the Giles Family. It would have been used to contain a pot plant or similar foliage to decorate a room. Donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by, Vera and Aurelin Giles this item is associated with Warrnambool and the Giles Family history. Many items have been donated by the family and have come to be known as the “Giles Collection”. Many items in the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage that were donated by Vera and Aurelin Giles mostly came from the home of Vera’s parents-in-law, Henry Giles and his wife Mary Jane (nee Freckleton) who married in 1880 and whose photos are on display in the parlour. Henry was born at Tower Hill in 1858, and was a labourer on the construction of the Warrnambool Breakwater before leaving in 1895 for around seven years to build bridges in NSW. Mary Jane was born in 1860 at Cooramook and she attended Mailor’s Flat State School and where she eventually was to become a student teacher. After which she became a governess at “Injemiara” where her grandfather, Francis Freckleton, had once owned land. Henry and Mary’s family consisted of six, some of the children were born at Mailor’s Flat and later some children at Wangoom. They lived with their parents at Wangoom and Purnim west, and this is where Henry died in 1933 and Mary Jane in 1940. The Giles family collection has social significance at a local level, because it illustrates the level of material support the Warrnambool community gave to Flagstaff Hill when the Museum was established. It also represents typical furniture and household goods owned by settlers in the Warrnambool District in the late 19th and early 20th century. For Australia, the invasion fear was uppermost in the minds of the population. So important were the rifle clubs for the defence of Australia that the Commonwealth provided the training staff, rifles and ammunition so the clubs could function. Members were drilled, wore uniforms and practised all the basic skills of soldiering as well as target shooting.
