Mitcham Post Office began in a shop in Whitehorse Road next but one from Elizabeth Street and Whitehorse Road. They moved to a shop on the corner of Whitehorse Road and Station Street with Mrs. Markham as Post Mistress. She had an assortment of items for sale in the shop. They daughter May married and lived with her parents and had quite a large family. Mary set up a photographic service, developing films and taking portraits of people and taking sets of photographs of the Mitcham area and selling photographic supplies for Kodak and Hesma. Till CollectionTHE TILL COLLECTION SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT|The significance of the Alwyn Till Collection is that Alwyn was born in Mitcham in 1921. He attended Mitcham Primary School and Box Hill Boys High School. He served his Community mainly through his activities within the Christ Church Anglican Church Mitcham. He joined the Royal Australian Airforce in World War II in September 1939. He trained as a Pilot in Australia and Canada, was posted to England and saw action in Europe. He was shot down over France and rescued by and then joined the French Resistance and while fighting with them was fatally shot. A Baron fighting with him wrote to his mother to inform her of his death.|Alwyn's parents were Evaleen Victoria Till (nee Maggs) and Sydney Norman Till who first lived in Creek Road Mitcham, before moving to 573 Whitehorse Road Mitcham. His father served in World War I where his eyesight was damaged and he was taught by the then Blind Institute in suitcase making of which we have two examples in this collection. He died in 1931. Alwyn took over responsibility for his mother and sister Alison. We can understand how devastated his mother and sister would have been at the news of Alwyn's feeling that he must serve his country in World War 11.|His letters home were so precious to them that they carefully kept all his correspondence, notices of death and condolences from friends. After Alison's death in 2007 her relation Joan Walker transcribed each of Alwyn's letters home into two bound volumes. The executors, Joan Walker and Anne Drew deposited the original letters with the Whitehorse Historical Society. Due to their significance as historical documents of one serviceman's complete correspondence with his family the Whitehorse Historical Society Committee after consultation with the donors deposited the original letters with the State Library of Victoria. The Whitehorse Historical Society retains the copies.|Alison and her mother kept many family memorabilia and personal items which make up this significant collection as they show how people lived, worked and served in the local community and municipality.|This collection represents the love and devotion of the women to their families during the course of two world wars. The father was disabled as a result of World War 1 and died an early death and a son who thereafter took on the responsibility as head of the family at an early age. This young handsome charismatic son served his community in peace time and gave his life in World War 11. A rare portrait of Henri Heremene. A french orphan, probably stunted by malnutrition, he was unofficially adopted by the Number 4 squadron, Australian flying corps when he wandered into their Christmas dinner at an airfield near cologne, Germany in 1918. Nickname "Digger," Henri came under the care of Private Timothy Tovell. With a tailored AIF uniform made for him, he was smuggled to Australia in1919, where he was adopted by the Tovell family. He remained traumatised by the war and died in 1928 from injuries received in a motorcycle accident in Melbourne. 30 min colour and sound 16mm film, severely faded, beginning with an interview with a Vietnam widow and going on to explain the help Sydney Legacy gave to bereaved families including outings, health, etc. Lionel Long, who was a Legacy ward, is interviewed and sings one of the ballads he was famous for in the 1960s. A Widow's Club meeting is shown and a party of the Northern Suburbs Progressive Twenties who raised money for Legacy. They were smoking, drinking, and eating what looks like cheerios and slices of bread in a large room hung with streamers and balloons and dancing to pop music. Junior Legatee Karen Miller was interviewed about her experience travelling to Switzerland to represent Australia at the Swiss Bank Centenary, Switzerland, with a boy from NSW, going on to stay with a Legacy family in London for a week. The functions of Legatees are explained as a Legatee is shown with one of his families. Also interviewed is a practising solicitor who attributes his qualification to the help he got from Legacy. Girls are shown rehearsing for their debutante presentation and the film segues to the actual presentation with the Governor Sir Roden Cutler, Governor of NSW, and his wife. Legatees are shown cutting, trucking and delivering firewood to widows. Roy J Mitchell was born in Williamstown in 1935 and grew up in Ballarat. He was the son of Horace Mitchell, a railway man, and Catherine Donovan whose father James Donovan was himself a railway man. Roy worked for the Victorian Railways also, until this era finished and worked into the MET era. Roy never lived in Bendigo but visited often, many times taking his daughter Rebekah with him, drawn in by the historical trams. His passions in life were his family, dogs, trains and trams and photography. His cousin Frank O'Meara, said "Roy always had his camera with him. He Took it everywhere".
